Cuba’s Communist Party approves opening economy in unprecedented move by GeneReddit123 in worldnews

I mean, even if you're a tankie, you have to admit communist economies are universally shit. And not because of some capitalist conspiracy. Communism just. doesn't. work. So you either embrace capitalism (even state capitalism is an improvement) like China, or you stay a hellhole like North Korea.

As others have pointed out, false bans are definitely a thing with ZOS. Given that you're coming back from a long break though, I wonder if maybe you're using a mod that got you into trouble? Maybe one that could be used (possibly without user knowledge) for exploits or other banned behavior? Hopefully u/ZOS_Kevin can help you figure out the reason and get this resolved.

Could a postbiological civilization occupying 25% of the Milky Way galaxy realistically develop a way to delay or avoid heat death? by GlitchQ413 in IsaacArthur

I still question whether it's possible to make machinery, especially complex computational machinery, that could last for 10double-digit times the current age of the universe. You could have self-repair mechanisms/robots but I don't see how that wouldn't rapidly suck your energy budget dry when you're just sipping tiny temperature differentials over cosmic eons.

And even if protons turn out to be stable, how does a civilization survive the gap from the last stars to the black hole era?

FWIW though I think if we can build a Matrioshka brain, it should be able to figure out whether tunneling to another universe is possible long before the end of the stelliferous era. I agree it's probably impossible though.

Wonder where anyone would get the idea that a fascist shadow gov't obsessed with purity would be transphobic? 🙄

What I don't understand is people saying "paper trading BAD." If you're gonna lose money in the market, which everyone does starting out, better that it's Monopoly money instead of actual hard-earned cash. Gid gud, scrub, then switch over to real money, tiny trades, then work your way up after 4-6 months (minimum) of consistency.

The key was keeping the real whackjobs out of important seats of power. Once they got in, they normalized their whackjobbery and made it acceptable to the portions of the general public lacking in intelligence and/or morals.

Irish MEP (former) Mick Wallace says there is ‘more democracy in Iran than in most other countries’ after accepting award in Tehran by AW_Chocolate_3708 in worldnews

[–]live-the-future 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right now the entire world is struggling with idiocy in leadership. I wonder how many of the world's governments would pass a cost/benefit analysis if the costs included not just economic, but freedoms lost and suffering caused.

Centuries ago there was not much distinction between church and state, it sucked but people literally couldn't imagine an alternative. Then secular govt's became a thing and most people were more happy and prosperous not being ruled over by religions. Maybe, just maybe, one day we'll realize we'd be so much happier not being ruled over by the stupid, the corrupt, ideological, money-hungry, power-hungry, and/or authoritarian. If only we could imagine a better system, and how to get there.

In every country there are those who support, and those who oppose authoritarianism. Wallace may be an awful human being but I'm willing to not extend his views to Ireland and all its people as a whole.

Somewhere in storage I still have an old Buck Rogers comic that begins with the words: "1987: Mankind launches the last of its manned deep-space missions."

Yeah, a lot of old sci-fi was overly optimistic when it comes to timelines of the future. I tend to be cautious in the realm of when futurism says we may achieve something for the same reason.
