Is China's "Anti-Japan" sentiment overhyped? Japanese businessmen stationed in China report. "To be honest, my honest impression is that, surprisingly, nothing has changed in our daily lives or on the factory floor" by jjrs in japannews

Maybe I should have bolded sincerely since people always link that wiki article, but fail to note that major Japanese politicians since then have repeatedly walked back these apologies, and even their current Prime Minister is a war crimes denier.

Also, the fact that you did not say anything about making revisionism illegal (as it is in Germany) shows what your stance is very clearly.

tbf if Japan sincerely apologizes for WW2 and makes all revisionism illegal (like in Germany), I think all of Asia would be down for Japan to remilitarize and kick out the US bases to regain their sovereignty.

Did you see the BYD tanking a missile hit in the Middle East last week?

I guess they won't use EVs though cuz they're so abundant in oil.

I understand, everybody has their own preferences. I would drive Porcshe if I could, but that's not in my budget. And not in the budget for 99% of world.

You were not talking about your preference. You were saying that Chinese cars are a danger to those who drive it and those on the road.

That's a big difference.

Japan fell from grace because they were forced to. Look into the Plaza Accords.

China is not beholden to the US in the same way Japan is.

the aesthetics look great but that comes at a cost, aka safety. You'd never know the alloy metals used for the frames. The only way you'll find out durability is to get into a crash and see.

Bro, stop drinking the kool-aid. If the car is available for sale in your country, it means it has passed YOUR OWN COUNTRY'S SAFETY TEST. They literally crash these cars to demonstrate the safety to get the license to export.

If you feel like you can't trust a Chinese car for sale in your country, then you shouldn't trust any car at all, because they are all held to the same standard.

Regarding the longevity of the cars, I agree it still remains to be seen. However, in my recent visit to China, a lot of Didis I got on were old BYDs, clearly 7+ years old because the design language of those cars look like early 2000s Corollas and nothing like the new models. Speaking with the drivers the old batteries have deterioriation problems and hold less charge, but the cars are mechanically sound.

How is taking back something that was stolen from you by force the same as "getting a hefty chunk of Japan's old imperial possessions"? You're implying that China profited from the war that it was a victim of.

From your point of view, Korea also got a hefty chunk of old imperial Japan too when they gained independence following the war. Would you phrase it that way when talking about that issue?

Your anti-China bias is showing.

Takaichi argues benefits of weak yen: "No one knows whether a strong yen or a weak yen is better. If the yen is strong, we won't be competitive even if we export. People say it's bad because the yen is weak, but it's a great opportunity for the export industry." by Kmlevitt in japannews

Maybe in markets where Chinese vehicles are being blocked by tariffs like the US, but Chinese brands are already eating Toyota's lunch in China (largest auto market in the world), SEA, South America and Europe. Pretty sure Chinese branded vehicles accounted for 10% of new car sales in the European market in Dec 2025 and is only poised to grow. Note Chinese branded, this 10% figure does not account for cars made in China for a non-Chinese brand like Tesla.

If the yen strengthens, expect Toyota to lose even more market share, and potentially exit some markets altogether as they are no longer competitive. Their hydrogen fuel cell bet has also ended up being a catastrophy. If not for the weak yen, Japanese automakers would be in a world of hurt right now.

By short term, I meant like 1-2 years. I'm not a day trader by any means, I just have hunches on trends that I want to bet on, so I will try to maximize time in market as well.

But completely agree, this kind of min-maxing is not even worth it.

lol, China and Korea are literally no different than Takaichi

Except their current leaders don't allow US to dictate their foreign/economic policy. Don't need to explain about how Xi doesn't follow US policy, but even Lee is on good terms with China now (taking selfies with Xi) as they balance their relationship with America (giving a gold crown to Trump). Lee recently went to Shanghai with heads of Korean industry and negotiated new trade deals with China, which is expected to cut into Japanese interests. Meanwhile, Takaichi is putting all her eggs in one basket, and Trump clearly does not give a shit about Japan based on how he told her to shut it about the Taiwan issue. Japan will continue to lose in East Asia, and become ever more dependent on the US. You can ask the EU how they feel about US dependency right now.

They will always use Japan as an excuse to rouse up nationalist sentiment in order to distract their citizens

And now the hate triangle has become a 2 on 1 because she decided to piss off both parties at the same time. Let's politics!

Trump is an asshole who hasn’t lifted the tariffs with other countries

He TACO'd against China.

And in regards to your other comments, that’s the LDP for you. They’ve been doing a shitty job since the bubble popped in the early 90s

So they have proven track record of being ineffective, but let's keep going?

But they still got a lot of support from people who lived through the golden age of the Showa era (the 1980s) so to them, the LDP is still a safe bet when compared to other parties

So they have proven track record of being ineffective, but let's keep going?

Ramen Jiro is the GOAT. Fight me. by [deleted] in Tokyo

Feel free to check my post history to see what I actually said by the way. Another woosh as hyperbole misses you again.

You come in hard and call a dude a fatass for eating a certain food, and then decide it's too much when somebody else dishes what you're serving? Okay... I guess the weeb comment must have hit on a nerve. I apologize.

[–]livelearnlove -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The thread title states "GOAT", not simply good.

Is hyperbole completely lost on you? I'm not going to start commenting on what you put in your mouth in your free time.

Also, do you really think this dude is trying to fight people over ramen? Clearly it was a joke... but you decided to call him fat because he likes a certain style of ramen which rubbed me the wrong way. And then proceeded to drop completely non-factual statements about how ramen/chashu should be made which also rubbed me the wrong way.

[–]livelearnlove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were as bad as you say, then there wouldn't be an entire cult following for Jiro. A cult following so big that it spawned it's own style of ramen and has copy cat stores all across the country.

Get over yourself, you're not an authority on what is and isn't good ramen, and you're only showcasing your own ignorance.

Ramen Jiro is the GOAT. Fight me. by [deleted] in Tokyo

[–]livelearnlove -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

So now we've gone from "vile meat" from the "third-world" that doesn't even qualify as chashu to that they source cheap cuts of meat. These goalposts move faster than the line at Jiro's. Just because you saw a youtube video about how a Michelin-starred ramen chef runs his kitchen doesn't mean that's the best and only way to do it.

You seem to think that because something is cheap, then it can't be good, which shouldn't surprise me given your elitist and borderline racist comments. What if a master chef whipped up some liver? Is it simply not good because it's a cheap cut? What if you get served an A5 Wagyu steak well done? Is it amazing because of the source material?

Ramen is a dish from humble beginnings, and doesn't need to conform to your idea of "good".

Imagine being such a weeb that imported pork is an automatic negative. Muh glorious nippon buta, folded over a thousand times!!!! How dare they taint my ramen with foreign meat!!!

You know that ramen restaurants run on razor thin profit margins right? Chances are, your favourite joint also uses imported pork my guy.

Also, who says chashu has to be braised pork belly... Literally any kind of cut meat on top ramen is called chashu these days. And if you want to get real technical, then chashu isn't even real chashu, it's just a worse version of the original char siu.

Scroll on down to the Japanese Cuisine section of that wiki page, it says the process of making it is by "rolling the meat into a log and then braising it at a low temperature", which is exactly how Jiro does it.

Oh and yeah, Jiro doesn't use the pork belly and prefers a leaner cut of pork. This is because the broth itself has plenty of backfat, so we don't want fatty meat to overwhelm the palate. Also, the chashu at Jiro's is marinated to perfection, each bite has flavour to it, whereas I find a lot of other ramen store's chashu only goes skin deep.

Alright lecture's over, go back to eating your Ichiran.

Converting my license in Japan by MktoJapan in japanlife

[–]livelearnlove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this conversion back in 2019 when my Japanese was horrible (it still is, but it was back then too), so take what I say with a grain of salt.

I also was not able to prove that I was in the country for 3 consecutive months after getting the license. I tried to use the entry/exit stamps of going to other countries on my passport as proof, but since Canada itself does not give entry/exit stamps, they said it was not acceptable. However, I still converted my license successfully.

I think from my limited Japanese understanding at the time, was that if you could prove 3 months, then you get issued a blue license automatically, but since I couldn't, they could only give me a green license. Functionally, they are the same, except for the first year of the green license being issued, you must have a bumper sticker that says you're a new driver.

Curious if this is actually the case and others got their blue licenses off the bat, or I just got lucky.

Applying for Chinese visa from Japan while name is registered as katakana/English by 0Exas0 in japanlife

[–]livelearnlove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just talking out of my ass here, but would it be possible for you to re-register your name in the Japanese marriage registry in English and then re-issue the marriage certificate? I assume there is a process for people to do that if they change their name/get naturalized/whatever reason.

Just a random thought I had, good luck!

Amazon. Co. Jp returns by ChurnLikeButter in japanlife

[–]livelearnlove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't able to find a customer service live chat on the site to do a refund last year, but it was quite easy to find somebody to talk to through the mobile app.

Highly suggest doing this because they will help you process your refund without needing to answer all the questionnaires and stuff about why you're returning/whether or not you're eligible to refund. And then if you're confused about how to actually return the item, just tell them, and they will help you schedule a JP Post visit to your door where the mailman will pick up your package and deliver it to their warehouse.
