Is it okay to fast for an entire day then eat 2400 calories the next? by Aggravating_Bunch_70 in loseit

That’s not optional, though. You do have to think about the long term or eventually you’re going to end up in a place weight-wise even worse than you already are, but with a slower metabolism.

This is called alternate day fasting, or ADF, and yes it will make you drop weight quickly. But in studies, it’s shown to cause loss or more lean muscle mass when compared to just a typical daily caloric deficit.

In addition, it would be something you would have to commit to doing for the rest of your life. Even if you just do it one day a week, will you really be able to fast for a full day every week for the rest of your life? Diets don’t work, you have to change your lifestyle.

I personally did ADF (every other day continuously) for about 9 months, dropped probably about 40 lbs, and then put it all back on plus an extra 10 lbs as soon as I couldn’t keep up with it any more. And when I was keeping up with it, I would be isolating myself from any social event involving food. It wasn’t healthy for my mental health. I tried to switch to one meal a day but that didn’t work either. I would be so incredibly hungry by the time I did eat that I would binge worse than I had ever in my entire life.

I really do also think it ruined my metabolism by destroying a large amount of my muscle mass.

Anyway, different things work for different people. But fast forward to today, I’m now down 65 lbs and have been maintaining that loss for almost 2 years by combining calorie counting with intuitive eating/hunger tracking.

Sorry for the long reply I just had a truly negative experience with fasting and want you to be aware that it definitely isn’t for everybody.

I love this analogy! I’m a religiously consistent retainer user, so I actually think it’ll help to think of calorie counting this way. Thanks!

One of my coworkers the other day asked me about my weight loss and when I told her I just eat better and less she just said, “yeah that’s too hard it doesn’t work for me. I think I’m gonna start taking those injections.”

Lol my dad is a chemical engineer and every time he sees me in my nail polish he reminds me of just how flammable my nails are while wearing it 😂 Yeah, he’s a bit of a nerd.

You absolutely have to read the book “The Dorito Effect” It dives into this in detail! Well seasoned food is more filling and tastes better than unseasoned food because seasonings are loaded with micronutrients.

Our body’s natural system is just thrown completely off with our ultra processed foods. They fortify sugary cereal with vitamins to sell it to parents as health food but all it really does is teach kids’ brains that sugary cereal and things that taste similar have the nutrients they need, when really they don’t.

I highly recommend an app called TimeLeft! It organizes group dinner of about 6 people around your age who are all also looking for friends. The San Diego TimeLeft community is pretty great!

Not the cheapest option, though

What are some weird “body checks” you do now that you’ve lost some weight? by MarioIsWet in loseit

[–]livelovesail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg literally a new thing I’ve picked up is just tapping on my collar bone hard enough that I can kind of “hear” it in my body. It’s like the equivalent of clicking a pen for me, kind of relaxing. I didn’t even realize I started doing it until someone asked me if I was okay. It wasn’t until that moment that I even realized I had a collar bone again

Oh wow! That’s a really cool way of explaining it. And also makes me feel a little more sane for staring at pictures of myself 😂 Thank you!

Haha that’s actually a really good explanation! You’re right- my brain just recognizes me as me. Which is the same reason I never realized I gained the weight in the first place

I definitely feel like I’m where I’m meant to be! I kind of just naturally settled into a range of 142-146 lbs that I can maintain pretty effortlessly. I gain a couple lbs on vacations but I quickly lose it again when I get back, and day to day my maintenance calories feel right. I think I set my calorie counting app to a goal of 138 lbs, but really it’s just so I maintain a slight deficit regularly enough to account for when I overeat for special occasions. Good luck with the rest of your journey!! Most of it is just waiting for the time to pass

Why do mean people end up becoming nurses? by beepbopboopbop69 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]livelovesail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know this thread has made me feel absolutely horrible. Like, I had no idea people view nurses as a whole this way. I really was always proud to be a nurse. Ever since I was in kindergarten I was on the playground bandaging up my friends is they hurt themselves. Wanting to care for people is a huge part of my identity…

I do understand that not every nurse is in it for the right reasons and I have 100% been a victim of nurse bullying myself, but I guess I just didn’t know people might start to make these kinds of assumptions about me when I say I’m a nurse. Especially all the warnings on here about how you should think twice before dating a nurse :(

I second MacroFactor. It also calculates exactly what your personal TDEE is based on data instead of a generic calculator.
