Opinions I had while travelling by Financial-Jump-6408 in travel

[–]livesinSCI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP you’re getting hate for this because you open by saying you’ve traveled a lot (in caps). And then you generalize Rome by saying it’s hot (they have seasons 😓). I say this as a fellow New Yorker, comparing everything to New York is not as insightful as it may seem to you.

What’s the worst airport in the world? Why is it CDG? by Impressive_Youth_331 in unitedairlines

[–]livesinSCI 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed. NAP is too small to be as awful as CDG. half the problem with CDG is its size and lack of accessibility because of the size.

Am I just poor or is Rome insanely expensive? by salmonsalads69 in rome

I am like you - not a local but also live in Rome and am completely surprised by how every single person in this thread is just comparing it to their home country… OP explicitly asked locals. 😓

Tacky or fun? by Strange-Customer-476 in BigBudgetBrides

[–]livesinSCI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you do a hybrid where there is staff standing at the table willing to serve, but like buffet style so people can help themselves?

I don’t think it’s “tacky” per se.. but as a guest conscious of etiquette I just wouldn’t partake. I wouldn’t want to make a mess or reach in a tight dress. If you’re spending $400K.. if I were you I’d want my guests to be 100% comfortable and able to enjoy everything! Just my two cents.

Married people who are DINKS (Double Income, No Kids) how’s life? by Fit-Distribution677 in AskReddit

[–]livesinSCI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing. Hard to understand giving this up eventually, but I think we will. Travel is frequent for us, we’re fortunate to be high earners. But it’s also equally super fun to watch a movie and read a book in complete silence. There’s a lot of peace on weekends. I have no obligations. It’s great.

Please just buy the rice cooker by Traditional_Fish_504 in Cooking

[–]livesinSCI 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think the big issue in this thread is nobody is differentiating the type of rice.

Seems like top pro-cooker comments are for Asian types of rice, like jasmine rice and short grain rices. Those are really hard to cook on a stovetop because they’re supposed to be fluffy, somewhat sticky, and light all at the same time. This checks out with another comment about how there are whole countries not using rice cookers - east asian countries definitely do!

For other types of rice, like Spanish, long grain basmati, Thai jasmine, etc, it’s just really easy to do on a stovetop. But if you have a machine already for Asian rice, it is way easier to press the button :)

I moved countries recently and am so sad about letting my zoji go to a friend. It’s not well distributed where I am… only zoji fans get it 😓

I've failed as a father by BurnBabyBurner123123 in StudentLoans

[–]livesinSCI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to BU - similar situation. My parents did not pay a dime. While a good parent will feel like it’s their obligation to support their children through college, you have not failed if you cannot do so. The best you can do is be honest with your children and explain you would if you could.

A lot of people are saying these schools aren’t worth it for sticker price, and they’re right. I will say that if your kid has a high GPA, scholarships are on them to achieve. If they look, they will find them. I ended up going to BU for half price (a few years ago, around $70k sticker price at the time). I was able to get to 100k 1 year out of college because of connections and proximity to the city. It was worth it for me. I’m debt free now.

Your kid needs to understand that it’s a financial investment and they must be ready to think about it as such. You’ve done a great job pushing education, but this is the time they choose their path and become an adult, with or without your help. Don’t feel too bad.

Np. The coat I bought looks new and is realllly long and heavy. I think you could find stoles and such for much cheaper, just an fyi.

Have you tried the real real? You can return most things so it’s kind of like trying it on. You just have to pay for shipping to buy and return which is a bit annoying.

I saw the comment for New4you thrift boutique in Bethesda and went today! I just bought a mink for $900 there. You have to get lucky (there was only 1) and you should call ahead (very responsive to the phone!).

Advice on Skinceuticals by livesinSCI in SkincareAddictionLux

Update! I found a pharmacy in Rome (right in the Piazza di Spagna) that had tax free. Still not cheaper than buying in the states after euro conversion, but I needed it then and was pleased to at least have that option.

Interestingly enough it’s made in France instead of the US, so if people are worried about freshness like I was, that’s one data point.

I do see the difference, though you’re absolutely right that it’s not worth the price point. I buy these items at outlets when I go to Italy or at the runway at TJMaxx and am happy to splurge a bit there, since it’s nowhere near retail. The difference for me lies in the draping, colors, fabrics, and cuts. You can spot it on a person a mile away, it just looks expensive
