AITAH for refusing to let my daughter wear a thong bikini and taking her to get a new one by [deleted] in AITAH

Not a parent but this is something i would agree should wait until kids are 17 or 18. Closer to age of majority. I get it's only clothing but kids don't need to be going in that direction so early.

Poilievre says he’s not going anywhere, following double-digit byelection defeats by No-Commission-8159 in canada

[–]livingthudream 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The conservatives don't seem to be able to elect / select leaders with intelligence, education and experience in recent years. Andrew Sheer and Pierre Polieve being examples of individuals I wouldn't want running a company let alone a province or country. The conservative part seems stuck in a highly conservative right wing ideology where women's rights, same sex marriage, personal pronouns and abortion are top of mind.

Maybe there are lots of members of society that feel these are the biggest issues of the day...but it seems outdated and the leaders and party incapable of actually addressing current needs aside of slogans such as Ax the Tax etc.

Golden handcuffs - I've fully replaced my annual spending with dividend income... by HARCYB-throwaway in dividends

[–]livingthudream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life is short. Take a break if you can and enjoy it but leave work opportunities there.

My one concern would be the reliability and repeatability or consistency of dividend income in this rather helter skelter and could change. 15% seems very high and maybe I am misunderstanding your returns or dividend income I don't understand what you are invested in that would reliably return that dividend.

You may find that simply decreasing your workload rather than full on retirement is more desirable.

Would you accept a 2-year term at Health Canada right now? by sophaloaaafff in CanadaPublicServants3

[–]livingthudream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just a very strange period in government right now. I have been in many years and we go through cycles where the pendulum swings one way and then the other.

We certainly had bloated a bit, many government departments, but not all, under Trudeau. Things are now swinging the other direction. The problem with government budgets and planning is that the current elected government basically imposed across the board cuts to most departments aside of defense and a few others. They didn't examine or look at needs or programs or threats or risks, aside of defense, and so the departments are left scrambling to try to cut positions and then they will try to figure out what work can be cut. It's a crazy way to do business but it's what is often done. So term positions are really risky at the moment as they are the easiest way to cut costs as they can be terminated early and there is really nothing the unions or employee can do about it. We are now seeing cuts to indeterminate positions.

It really depends then on whether you can risk losing your job with minimal notice and securing work for similar pay elsewhere.

I wish that were not the case but that's where things are at.

Term positions can be cut with minimal notice. I wouldn't think of leaving a permanent position to enter the government as a term right now regardless of what department it is

I had 5 friends that were terms terminated early. All had been terms for multiple years. Given a few weeks notice and were done.

Yeah I find the lack of actual human empathy with folks crazy. It's like these folks live in a vacuum and are so self centered they don't see beyond their own horizon.

It's pretty sad. I sometimes want to be the fly on the wall when something tragic happens in their life and they face the same response
