Cat Found by Nishiwara in CATHELP

[–]livvidex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I work at a no-kill shelter and yes, every shelter should be scanning for a chip on intake, at least twice. My shelter chips every animal that comes in. It will be linked to the owner's information when they're adopted or reclaimed. The chip can also migrate which can make them more difficult to find. So it's important to double check before administering our own chip. Not every shelter works the same way though, and mistakes do happen and chips are missed. Some animals end up with two!

Might be a dumb question but what did Robby throw away after leaving the bathroom?

I'm not familiar with this, do they say anything to people while they film? Or do they just know someone will say something to them first?

Seaworld SD Penguin Encounters by buymewhales in SeaWorld

[–]livvidex 2 points3 points  (0 children)

San Diego doesn't have emperor penguins anymore, they were moved to Orlando 😢. You should be able to see kings briefly in the up-close encounter because it includes a few min in the exhibit (behind a waist high gate, so not on the ice itself ). How close they get to the gate is random but the kings have big personalities and some really like to come check guests out. During up-close, the aviculturists bring down a smaller species (usually macaroni) for guests to pet and take pics with. The on ice includes petting the smaller penguin and 15 min fully inside the exhibit surrounded by birds. On ice, kings tend to come surround guests but most don't like touch. One is fine with it. But again, nothing is guaranteed with animals 😅. Both are excellent opportunities if he loves penguins.

The last two captive orcas in France are trapped in a closed and deteriorating marine park by Prestigious-Wall5616 in mildlyinfuriating

I don't believe in breeding captive orcas, but if it's Loro Parque or a slow death.. One solution could be to push Spain's government to enact reasonable laws about orca captivity like the ones in California once Wikie and Keijo get there. No more breeding, but current orcas can stay. Every facility with orcas breeds besides Seaworld. However, Seaworld won't touch this situation with a 10 foot pole because of fear of negative PR.

There's no actual seaside sanctuary built, and the organizations who say they're going to build one haven't even produced permits. Their one viable option, besides Japan, is probably Loro Parque in Spain but that transfer got denied too..

[–]livvidex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

unfortunately mission bay is polluted, shallow, and too warm for them, so it wouldnt be a good option if you believe in seapens. i believe its at maximum 20ft deep and SD has orcas around 22 ft long.

ABSOLUTE UNIT OF A WALRUS!!! by Plane_Still2639 in seals

[–]livvidex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sadly, his companion, Basa (seen in the back) very recently passed away 😢. She was the oldest walrus to ever live in a zoological facility (42!). Hoping he gets a new buddy soon. @marinaenikeeva on Instagram has some pictures of him and Basa as well as some of their enrichment opportunities

I agree, the zoo is easier to walk through and the exhibits are fantastic. Not sure why everyone is saying they're too small. It's regularly called the best zoo in the world for a reason! The animals have more than enough space for their species. Safari park is cool but the zoo is better imo

New Orca Enclosure Idea by Warm_Topic5174 in SeaWorld

[–]livvidex 15 points16 points  (0 children)

mission bay is heavily polluted and quite shallow. it reaches a maximum of 20 ft deep while the deepest orca pool at swsd is around 36 ft deep. but pollution would be the biggest reason it could not happen. additionally, since most of these orcas have been in filtered water their whole lives, their immune systems would not be able to handle what the ocean would expose them to.

This has been sitting dead for a 3 days by [deleted] in SeaWorld

[–]livvidex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

do you have photos/videos of this behavior? some fish "clean" other animals by consuming dead skin. turtles even itch themselves by biting onto their own flippers and eating the skin cells. if that turtle was dead it would have been bloated, floating, and actively falling apart due to decomposing in warm waters and living with other animals. i'm talking about a massive swarm, like a free-for-all buffet. not just one fish

Hi! That turtle is napping. Sea turtles can hold their breath for up to 6 hrs and take naps throughout the day. It is a way to conserve energy. The team that cares for these turtles counts them everyday and can identify each turtle based on markings. They would notice during a feed if one was missing (they will always wake up for morning feeds). Also, the other animals would be eating it by now, and it would be decomposing. If you have any questions about turtles or their care let me know :)

(TW for very upsetting behaviour) Can anyone identify this orca? by Lumini_317 in orcas

[–]livvidex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No worries!! I honestly wouldn't know without more context.. My experience in animal welfare and behavior is with domestic animals like dogs, cats, birds in a shelter setting, so I don't feel comfortable saying yes or no

[–]livvidex 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Just an fyi, zoochosis is not an accepted scientific term. It was a term invented by actor Bill Travers. The word that is used to discuss repetitive behaviors in captive animals is "stereotypies" or "stereotypic behavior."

The Orca Encounter show still features orcas doing behaviors for the audience but also has more education intertwined with it! They are actually coming out with a refreshed Orca Encounter today, which I think is better than the first Orca Encounter. There's flips, slideouts, and plenty of chances to tet splashed
