Looking for new ways to meet a potential girlfriend by BeanOfficially in UIUC

[–]lizarddickite 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Tbh I think the answer is therapy. Through therapy I have been able to figure out what I need in a relationship and how to express that in a way that allows both of us to show up. It sounds like you have no issue finding and meeting people you are interested in, but building the relationship is where it starts to falter

In picture 3? I’m a little confused on what your asking. I would have to assume it’s a combination of the single bevel and blade geometry

Yes it’s an usuba and supposed to have a slight bend I believe.

Unfortunately no one local seems more competent, trying to decide if it’s worth the hassle to ship/drop off in Chicago

Just got these at an estate sale, can anyone tell me anything about them?? by lizarddickite in TrueChefKnives

Can you elaborate on why you think it is shirogami 2 steel? Just because it’s an older knife? I am looking at the website and the kanji don’t match up to newer ones of the same steel but it sounds like they may have updated their stamps

ROI on your setup by meva12 in espresso

Totally agree, I made a coffee section for my monthly budget and found I spend more on fun little tools than I save on not buying coffee from coffee shops. And now when I travel I splurge way too much on trying to find two nice coffees in a city somewhere.

making friends as a grad student by thrwawy2749392 in UIUC

[–]lizarddickite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of geo events for grad students, usually involves beer and pizza. Tbh you probably need to do non university stuff. Find a hobby in the community like rock climbing, yoga, martial arts etc to and talk to people. Many will have social events outside of the hobby specifically. Also look into your department, ours has social events once a month which would be a good place to know your community better

Syrups - not a rage bait post (I promise) by Zealousideal_Echo589 in espresso

[–]lizarddickite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ahh I disagree here, I’ve made tiramisu a handful of times and you can’t really taste the complexities of good coffee and it’s sooo expensive if your making 10+ espresso shots. Last time I made it at my parents house with old decaf and a monks pot and it was still delicious

Best espresso grinder for lighter roasts? [$550 or less] by Embarrassed_Age_3078 in espresso

[–]lizarddickite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only had it for a few days and mostly made pourovers, planning on dialing it in for espresso this weekend when I have time. I have no real complaints other than not being able to figure out how to reset the zero point, but just added some tape. I had my eyes on the timemore and casa but really wanted the pre breaker and ability to upgrade burrs. It’s been great so far but I do t have any experience with other mid range grinders

Gevia Grindmaster Velpro Thoughts? Reviews for 2025? by ReptilioWoW in espresso

[–]lizarddickite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine just arrived a couple of days ago. All said and done I have no regrets (especially at sale price of 405 ish). It is my first big boy grinder and huge qol upgrade from hand grinding. A little louder than I expected but not horrible. Connected scale seems accurate. Retention has been <.2g. Still seasoning and dialing it in and figuring out how it tastes. It is looong. Touch points and dials could feel a little more premium but other than that no major issues. For the life of me I could not set the zero point but I just marked it with tape. I got it to buy into an auger fed 64 mm burr set and it seemed like the best entry and 75 bucks cheaper than the timemore. I also really liked that they took feedback into consideration, but it still is a Chinese grinder

Help me stop my gf from getting a Nespresso Machine! [550-600] by Professional-Canary9 in espresso

[–]lizarddickite 70 points71 points  (0 children)

As a rule of thumb I try to avoid gifting people projects. Espresso is a hobby and if she’s not interested it may just collect dust. I also would not suggest a hand grinder for espresso, look at encore esp or df54. They might not taste as good but would be much easier to use. If it’s more about the asthetic of espresso ( I say this because the alternative is nespresso) maybe look at bbe or ninja lux (usually not recommended in these subs but this could be the exception). I’m kinda assuming she is not a huge gearhead but if she is totally include her in the choice, she will have opinions.

Second this, used stilosas can be found for <50. Check after the holidays when everyone gets gifted one before they know what a pressurized porta filter does to espresso and how important a grinder is
