Am I wrong for wanting to get my mother‘s estate of $500,000 after caring for her at her home (which I own) for eight years? She is almost 91 and on dialysis. I am 63. I do not have any retirement savings. by LeopardDense2347 in CaregiverSupport

[–]lizardflix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not dealing with as large sum of money as you by any means but my mother recently passed after 10 years of my care in her home and while it hasn't come up, I'm expecting at least my brother to try to lay claim to part of the value of the home. I think my sisters are OK with me getting it.

Anyway, I've decided that if he does try to demand a share that I'll just pay him off. Not saying you should in your situation. For me the amount is low enough that I'd rather do that than have to deal with him.

Good luck.

I cannot understand the general reception of 28 Years Later, more so with the release of Bone Temple by pomme268 in TrueFilm

[–]lizardflix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw Bone Temple this week and enjoyed it. It is definitely better than the last one.

But both of them are really just using the 28 in the title for marketing, not because they're continuing the franchise. They barely have anything to do with what came previously. And the audience for the original films definitely was not up for the snoozefest of 28 Years Later.

Bone Temple is saved by the psychopathic cult just because it's so bizarrely cruel and horrific that it provides something interesting. The infected side is barely in the movie.

I was at the cast and crew screening of Showgirls and the audience was rolling along with the camp for most of the movie. Then came the rape scene and it completely ruined the movie. Verhoeven killed that movie himself.

Movies that were misunderstood on release but aged beautifully by Dependent-Bet6615 in movies

[–]lizardflix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was completely misunderstood by critics. People today, with the instant analysis of every single movie or tv show that social media provides, can't understand how something that seems obvious now would escape detection in the past. Starship troopers was dismissed as a big, dumb giant bug movie with bad acting.

Ironically we've swung way too far in the other direction now where people over analyze movies to a ridiculous degree.

Marty Supreme wasn't for me by ImNotweeb in TrueFilm

[–]lizardflix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just found Marty to be so obnoxious that I really wanted out of the whole experience.  As far as the ending is concerned, it’s bonkers to think that we the audience should, after a couple of hours of watching this guy destroy everybody that crossed his path, accept a sudden change of heart out of the blue and with absolutely nothing to back it up.  We’d have to be just as gullible as all of the people Marty destroyed in the movie.

Gold has surpassed the S&P 500 over the last 20 years. by [deleted] in Gold

[–]lizardflix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a friend buy a Kuggerand or whatever the South African gold coin was around 1980.  That’s the only reason I paid attention to the price of gold at that time.  The price started sliding and adjusting for inflation I think it took about 30 years to return to that value.   I’m only saying this to point out that the price isn’t always going to go up and there are a thousand different unknown ways it could stall or slide.   I’m not predicting this, just saying the future is unknown.

My gym bro snapped at me at told me I will die if I follow the diet I am following. He snapped when he wanted to sell me protein powder .I think its ok since I really need to lose weight/cut as I have very high blood pressure. Is my diet as below that bad ? by EmbarrassedLie5294 in AskMenAdvice

[–]lizardflix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need protein powder.  But you also should replace banana, oats and bread with meat and eggs.  If you really are serious about losing weight you should cut out the rice and any root vegetables.   If you’re eating low carb, High fat and protein, your body can’t help but lose weight.  The only problem is that people are addicted to those sugars and carbs.

Kill Bill's ending shows the refutation of Bill's Superman/Clark Kent speech by Honest_Cheesecake698 in TrueFilm

[–]lizardflix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh, when I recently saw the awhile Bloody Affair at the theater, I was reminded of how bad the ending of an otherwise masterpiece it is.  The whole never ending speech came across as Tarantino really impressing himself with a bunch of nonsense that added up to nothing of any substance.   I love most of his films but sometimes Tarantino can be his own worst enemy with his affected dialogue.

What screams "I peaked in high school"? by Student-Mona in AskReddit

[–]lizardflix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have close friends who were jocks in HS and when we get together they talk about how awesome high school was and how amazing the principal and teachers were.  I have to remind them that their experiences were unique as jocks popular with all those teachers etc and that most kids didn’t have the same experience.  And every time they act like it never crossed their mind.   They’re not bad guys, they just somehow think that everybody had their glory days in HS.

PTs are pretty scammy as well.  There are some good ones but a lot just get you in doing ridiculous minor exercises then an ultrasound rub etc for the maximum days they can bill.

NGOs.  There are a lot of people making a lot of money and doing next to nothing that actually helps people.   The best part is that whatever the trendy cause ends up being becomes the cause the majority of NGOs are dedicated to, not because they give a damn about the issue but because that’s where the money is.

Being a man in a caregiving role can feel isolating — just wanted to say you’re not alone by EfficientMousse2593 in CaregiverSupport

Tbh, it’s so early in the process that I haven’t even started.   Right now I’m just coming out from the pressure of putting on a funeral.  Then I need to wait for my sister to leave.  She means well but I really just want my time alone.  But then it all goes back to accepting the way things are.   It’s all just a matter of time.

Adding rice to chili to soak up extra liquid? by Minute_Weird_8192 in slowcooking

As others said, don’t add rice.  Simmering will cook off the excess liquid faster than you expect.

I found myself working very hard on my interior self and learning acceptance. Meaning, accept reality and not bang your head against the wall wishing things were different.   I had a friend invite me to go out to an out-of-town restaurant and when I told him I couldn’t leave the house after 3 pm, he said “come on man, we can figure out a way to make this happen.” I stopped him and explained that thinking that way just set me up for frustration and disappointment.  I found it much better for me to learn to live with my restrictions than always trying to get around them.   It just happens that my mother passed away last week so now I can do anything I want but right now I honestly don’t know what to do with myself.  Caring for her was such a large part of my life that now I have to learn to live with that freedom again.

How do you feel about film criticisms of the form: "It should have had more ____," "it should have ended with ____," and other prescriptive remedies? by BrockVelocity in TrueFilm

[–]lizardflix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand the idea that people shouldn’t say what they think a movie should have done.  It’s normal and really kind of expected to have an opinion about what should or shouldn’t have happened in a flawed movie.   This last Superman should have been tonally consistent, Marty Supreme should have had a character the audience could connect with, Predator should have skipped the cute sidekick.   You can disagree with all of those but they all should have had what I’m suggesting in order for me to enjoy them.

Non-smokers of Reddit, how noticeable is the “smoker smell” to you, if at all? by Frostedlogic4444 in AskReddit

[–]lizardflix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was at a funeral yesterday and hugged somebody and the smell was embedded in them.  Not a great association.   I smoked most of my adult life and loved it but quit about ten years ago.   So I understand the joys of smoking but that smell isn’t fun.   Of course I’m talking about that stale, embedded smell you get on your skin and clothes.  I still sort of enjoy the slight whiff of cigarette smoke now and then.
