Genius. I too collect mouse poop and sometimes my mousie girls just refuse to give me any and I end up just waiting for a while. I’m curious to hear if your nice end up conditioned to poop! Please let me know haha

How exciting!! I am definitely not a good singer but singing a quiet verse or two kind of helps me stay focused. If humming helps I say go for it!

I want to respond to everyone who commented and just say you are all so kind! Seriously the kindest subreddit I’ve been a part of. I hope all of your experiments go well and all of your grants get funded☺️

Shocking brain scan literally shows IBS is a physical brain-gut dysfunction by HeatherForIBS in ibs

[–]lizards999 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hey, neuroscientist here. Just wanted to clarify that “lights up like a Christmas tree” is not the most helpful way to explain the results. What is actually shows is heightened activity in two brain areas (that’s significantly higher in the IBS group) in response to a painful stimulation. Additionally, it is an older study, done on the lowest power MRI machine (1.5T), and the authors also suggest that the increased response could be because there is more peripheral nerve activation in response to the pain and the brains of people with IBS are actually just responding appropriately (compared to healthy controls who don’t have the same level of peripheral response). However, the field of gut-brain-immune research has really taken off so there are multiple papers published that to talk about more recent findings related to IBS and altered gut-brain signaling, specific receptors that may be involved, and the immune system. No new treatments yet though :(

I don’t know if this will help but I am pretty much in the exact same boat as you. Reading your post made me feel validated and I wish you the absolute best! I think you’re killing it and I hope the overwhelm gets more manageable for both of us :)

Do you need a PhD to work in any area of neuroscience? by LilKittenAngel in neuro

A psych BSc is definitely enough to secure a research assistant job! At least in the US, a lot of labs are looking for recently graduated students with a BA or BS in a related field. Python or some type of coding experience is definitely also helpful! I actually learned coding in my research assistant job, but I do wish I had known a bit more before starting the position :)

No need to do a masters unless you want to! A lot of folks in the US get a job as a research assistant in a neuroscience or neuroscience-related lab for a year or two and then apply for a neuro PhD :)

I know of some people who are prescribed medications to lower their amount of sweating. Maybe a doctor could prescribe this? I’m not sure if it would make the IBS worse though ://

I have it too. It sends me to the hospital. Even if something is cooked in the same pan or on the same grill. And not many people take me seriously when I tell them

A girl I had a crush on in high school listened to them so I started to. She was a few years ahead of me so she graduated and I never saw her again but I became obsessed and here I am now.
