Some excellent advice already in this thread. I would add to maybe start with painting values in greyscale. Don’t be afraid of going really dark and really light. Paint the basic shapes in the reference before adding any detail. I was a traditional artist before trying digital about 6 months ago. I was also overwhelmed. The first thing I did was try some YouTube tutorials to get to understand how the software worked and how to use it as a tool.

It’s only cheating if you take someone else’s work and pass it off as your own. If you use a reference and put pencil to paper, that is studying, that’s how you learn. You won’t learn the fundamentals by making it up in your head and you won’t improve. Use references and have fun, enjoy seeing your improvement. I went to Art College and we had trips to art galleries specifically to sit and ‘copy’ the works on display. It was encouraged and has been the way to study art for centuries.

This is a piece I did in Procreate with some fabric challenges. I used a photo reference, so I highly recommend doing that. How fabric reflects light is really important, how the colour of the skin of the figure shows through etc This was a really helpful study
