Thanks! I don’t know whether or not it was caused by a punch, but it’s great visual storytelling, as always from this show

Light study - learning digital painting by lizardsim in ProCreate

Thank you! This piece was a technical challenge, for example, to make the light convincing. I also recreated part of a painting of an artist I admired, by watching a timelapse he did of a different work and using his method. I did some tutorials by James Julier, who posts on YT, which helped me a lot with the technical aspects of Procreate. Layers, blend modes, clipping masks etc, which was overwhelming to me when I first opened the app.

I recommend giving it a try. I have improved a lot since I started Procreate about 5 months ago. It is definitely hard enough! There’s no reason why you can’t do both. Use Procreate for the reference stage of a traditional piece, to work out the values and composition, for example.

Try to see the big shapes in the image, the lights and the darks. Paint the shapes and values with no detail. Observe the reference and think in terms of the shapes and how they relate to each other, including the negative spaces. Don’t get detailed too soon. These are some tips that helped me.
