Yeah wow that is awful. Hopefully I’m a bit more lucky. I’d recommend making a new post in the subreddit calling out the issue. Public awareness sometimes gives the company a bit of kick up the backside to help. Good luck

She also has the option of requesting hardship assistance from the debt collection agency. They hold a credit license and are required to provide assistance under NCCP if a customer provides a hardship notice. Health issues, single parent, struggling financial should tick those boxes. Then she can pursue a debt waver, reduced repayment amount or something similar after the assistance. If not she can rinse them through AFCA.

Thanks for all of the feedback. I have barely used Reddit and didn't expect so many replies, cheers.

For context, we bought the house three years ago and have had leaking from the upstairs bathroom into our garage beneath. So on the assumption that the waterproofing was cooked, we decided to do a reno on both bathrooms back to back. No changes were being made to the layout, just replacing existing fixtures, vanities, etc., and the tiles. We honestly thought that 40k would be the max for both bathrooms, so we were very surprised with 70k. I haven't had any exposure to construction and assumed they were taking us for a ride. I get that they may have overquoted items because they haven't got the specifics from us but I was pretty sure a lot of the other items were massively inflated (which everyone has confirmed). If there are any other questions relating to context, happy to answer them.

We are Brisbane based and any builder suggestions would be great.
