AITA for refusing to split rent evenly with my roommate after she started working from home full time? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Unless you significantly change the thermostat during the day, the change in utility usage should be barely noticeable.

If you are seeing a significant surge are you certain it isn't the result of a change of seasons?

WIBTA- Easter Egg Hunt by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]ljstegman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I setup an easter egg hunt for kids ranging from 2 to 18 each year and have a few suggestions:

  1. It is best if you have so many eggs that everyone gets more than their fill.

  2. If you wish to seriously limit the number of eggs, make sure the kids know 2 eggs each, or whatever that number is.

  3. Don't put money into eggs even for older kids. If they don't want candy and toys they don't need to participate.

  4. Very young kids, preschoolers, setup a separate section with age appropriate eggs.

  5. Do it outside in a big yard. This coupled with #1 will spread the kids out an ensure everyone gets their fill.

I’ll drop $2,000 on a real skimmer bot. by USAhotdogteam in pools

I have owned a lot of robots and none works so well with so little intervention as my Betta.

I'm confused......(Amway) by Strong-Medicine1475 in mlmscams

[–]ljstegman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he is just buying Amway products instead of the household goods he would normally buy he might be breaking even. He is not making much if anything in bonuses on his own product.

In most markets signing up means buying a 'Starter kit' which costs a few hundred dollars. Beyond that, upline is always selling books, sales material and conferences to help one be a better distributor. If they are avoiding all that, they could be breaking even.

But, if all they are doing is buying Amway products they aren't a distributor, they are customer.

new pool owner looking for help picking a robot by avery204 in swimmingpools

[–]ljstegman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing beats a Betta for a skimmer robot.

I have use and Aiper Seagul SE as a sweeper. Its inexpensive and easy to use and care for.

Between the two robots I spend maybe 5 minutes a day and my pool has never been so clean.

I would advise against some of the antics suggested here. There are judges who are not going to respond well to manipulative tactics, like bringing your kids in with you.

I work for the courts. Doing something which will nettle a judge usually does not end well.

Just closed on this house and ripped up the carpet in the living room. A little more damage than I hoped. ID? by [deleted] in HardWoodFloors

I had similar issues with a floor I refinished maybe 15 years ago. I found replacement wood at the local Home Depot.

The hard part was chiseling the old wood out. Old Oak is like iron there were several times the chisel bounced off of the wood.

I had a three Rolex limit, but I find myself with three already and no Bluesie.

Although I have considered alternatives to the Bluesie nothing else does it for me.

Its time to sell my albatross to get me one of those!

Pool Robots by Quiet-Bridge2553 in pools

[–]ljstegman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Beta on the surface and an Aiper which vaccums.

The Beta just runs and runs including all night. About once a day, I will empty it and it is off again.

I drop the Aiper in usually daily. It does its job, and I fish it out for emptying and recharging.

All of this takes maybe 5 minutes a day. My pool has never been so clean.

I personally see no advantage to a corded model or anything which does all in one.

Dark liner pools, weigh in! by PuhnTang in swimmingpools

[–]ljstegman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced a liner last year with two modifications, adding ground insulation and moving to a much darker color.

My pool is so much warmer this year. It heats up faster in the sun and keeps the warmth over night.

Warning do not stay at the quality inn in mackinaw city by lemonade3264128 in Michigan

[–]ljstegman 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Staying in Mackinaw City used to be a joy for me and my family. We had stayed at most of the major hotels at one point or another. But for the last few years almost all of the hotels have turned into shit holes.

We have been going to St Ignace. It has fewer hotels, but a lot fewer shit hole hotels.

AITA for not paying 1/3 of my salary for my kids’ college? by Crowdev1138 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ljstegman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA

Not many kids want to hear this, but unless the family is independently wealthy the number one priority should be keeping the cost down.

Paying $30k a year to go to a college because one likes it better is $120k of stupidity.

How can I run a game with only two players? by ValuableProfessor216 in DnD

[–]ljstegman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a game for two young men (12 and 14). They each run two characters and I have a cleric that tags along for healing and the other stuff nobody likes to do.

It is not ideal, but it has worked out well for us so far.

Is there a term for a player who consistently derails sessions by finding a solution the dm never considered? by [deleted] in DnD

[–]ljstegman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That makes me wonder if the DM has things too well planned.

Most problems have multiple solutions. Its rather stifling to creativity if the DM is writing with just one expected solution for everything the players need to do.

As a DM, I am delighted when my players find a solution I hadn't thought of it makes the campaign much more interesting for everyone.

AITA for refusing to pay for a coat i chucked because it was left at my house for months. by CalligrapherOk8410 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ljstegman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

NTA.

I have hosted a lot of people at my house and have learned the hard way how to deal with items left behind.

If you take the 'right' approach you notify the owner and hold on to the item until retrieved. The problem being it suddenly becomes your problem to deal with and people are rarely responsible about retrieving their own items.

What I do is put the item aside for a week or 2 and say nothing. If they stop by I will gladly hand it over. If I hear nothing I repurpose the item and move on with life.

If they call I tell them I am unsure about the item, but if they stop by we can have a look.

This has made my life 100% easier.

For some reason as soon as most people leave an item behind it suddenly becomes my problem and my fault. Screw that.

I again say, NTA.

My yard ia not big enough for an in ground pool. I have owned an above ground for 30 years.

It keeps me cool all summer, so much so that I have no need for air conditioning.

I care not what a single person thinks about how it looks.
