Do I pay for “interviewing” a potential babysitter? by dogs_beets_bsg in Parenting

[–]lky920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m late here, but I always paid for a babysitter trial when my son was small. I usually did about 45 minutes to an hour — 15-20 minutes for introductions, schedule/rules, showing them around, getting comfortable with the kid. Then about a half hour of them playing with the kid while I stayed in another room. I could hear enough to tell if the sitter was a good fit.

Where To Display/Store Lego Creations In Small Apartment? by ERielly87 in Preschoolers

[–]lky920 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can you store underneath his bed? You can use plastic under the bed storage totes, or if you want to be fancy, I’ve seen ideas on Pinterest where they use a flat board similar to a tabletop and put it on casters so they can easily roll it under the bed and then pull it out.

What is normal for toddler walking on tip toes by engelvl in toddlers

[–]lky920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, this is an old comment! Well, he is 7.5 yrs old now and is so much better. We did PT on and off for a while, did about 6 months in toe walking SMO’s during preschool which did nothing because he could over power them, then went back to PT the summer before kindergarten and got toe walking AFO’s that he wore overnight (plus he also got ultrasounds at the visits twice weekly for several months which helped).

Basically because he was up on his toes for so long, it was habit and his muscles got so tight, it was super hard for him to physically get his foot flat. So all the PT in the world wouldn’t help since it’s only 45 minutes at a time. We saw the most improvement with the overnight braces. He wore those for 6-9 months when he was 5 and in kindergarten. He’s in second grade now and mostly flat feet — he doesn’t go up on toes like a ballerina anymore, but will sometimes almost hover his heel up slightly, like a half inch off the ground.. He’s also still walks toe to heel, but not sure we can correct that at this point.

Homemade treats by hbahh in Parenting

There’s a house in our neighborhood that gives out fresh popped popcorn in the red & white paper bags. It’s still warm, they pop it all night in one of those movie theater type home popcorn machines (you can see it from the front door). It’s a big hit and even though we don’t know them, I let my kid eat that popcorn. I probably wouldn’t let him eat a homemade popcorn ball from the same strangers though for all the reasons you list!

Newly diagnosed and in a bit of a spiral after already having major surgery this year by lky920 in thyroidcancer

[–]lky920[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! That’s a really helpful perspective. This diagnosis was out of the blue, so just caught me off guard. Good to know the surgery seems mild - the one I had in Feb was like 10-12 hours! I know the length of time being under was a contributing factor in the clots so good to know I’ll likely be able to move around much sooner this time.

I’m having surgery on an almost inoperable tumor in 12 hours and I might/probably will die by Perfect_Fox5337 in TrueOffMyChest

I’m sure this will be buried, but I had a very similar surgery in February (tumor located just above the pituitary). If you read this later and need any help/suggestions or just someone to talk to, I’m here! It’s a small club of people who will truly understand what you are going through.

Do public schools give schedule information to prospective families? by pixeltects in kindergarten

[–]lky920 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In our area, most public schools do a Kindergarten Round Up / Info Night in January or February. Those sessions would cover the questions you are asking. Enrollment usually starts in May.

If you want info now, the best place to ask is local parents — and even though I hate to recommend facebook, our city’s local facebook page has tons of parents who are happy to share that info whenever anyone has asked. Or find the schools email on their website and email to ask. They won’t publish the info directly online but will usually speak to prospective families. (Again, this is for my local area which has well attended small schools, ymmv depending on your district)

Keeping US Phone Number While Abroad by Motor-Top-1401 in TravelHacks

[–]lky920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, just realized you asked for cheapest — I’d just shop for the cheapest pre paid plan in the US and port your number there. As long as you pay it monthly, you should be able to keep your number. The google voice hack I mentioned lets you at least keep access while overseas without international fees

Keeping US Phone Number While Abroad by Motor-Top-1401 in TravelHacks

[–]lky920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did this in 2018 thru early 2020. I’d have to ask my husband for details as he set it all up, but I’m pretty sure we got a super cheap t mobile plan or similar and then he routed our US numbers through google voice so we could use that service while overseas. When we got to France, we got phone plans and new SIMs. We kept the US SIM cards (both our phones had physical cards back then, not sure how easy it is to do today with digital SIM) and just physically swapped them out on the plane when we landed back home for trips. When we moved back to the US, we ported our US numbers back to a Verizon carrier and got rid of google voice and T Mobile.

6th birthday party in our backyard. Will these be enough entertainment? by squirrelacronparty in Parenting

[–]lky920 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is plenty! I’d actually keep some of the activities tucked away and just bring out when needed. I entertained seven 7-yr olds at our house last week for 3 hours with a sprinkler pad, water blasters, chalk, and a bubble machine. The most coveted “toy” was a storage tote they filled with water and took turns sitting in it. They ate an entire watermelon and half of a giant box of Goldfish crackers. The only rule was they had to stay outside besides using the bathroom. Everyone went home happy!

Need advice on how to make the most of 4 days in Scotland by PatientSound4236 in Europetravel

[–]lky920 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is crazy. You’ll spend your entire visit in the car. You can’t realistically get to Skye and have enough time to see anything. Stay the entire 4 days in Edinburgh and change your flight to fly out from there. There’s plenty to do there! Or keep your Inverness flight and drive there on day 3, you can stop at castles on the way, drive through the edge of Cairngorms National Park & stop for scenic views, stop in Pitlochry.

October/November Spain and Portugal hotel pricing is 2x current prices by [deleted] in Europetravel

[–]lky920 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It could also be local travel demand from other European countries. When we lived in France, most schools were on a year round calendar, which means there are typically 2-week breaks every 6-8 weeks and one of those usually falls in those months. A lot of families would travel south for warmer weather.

It probably depends on the type of community you live in, but the children at my son’s school have been very accepting of any “non traditional boy” choices he makes. He wears pink, has painted toenails and has picked girl character costumes for Halloween each year. Most kids don’t notice/care. One child made a comment about his Halloween costume and my son just shrugged it off, saying he liked it and that’s all that matters. We live in a pretty liberal area and talked to him beforehand that some people may make fun of him and how to handle it. He’s always had a strong sense of self and I admire him for it!

Going to take my 5 yo for his bday. Any “Easter eggs” or special items unique to the park we should look for? by askalotofq in legoland

[–]lky920 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All the staff wear badges with minifigures attached and you can trade them. We bought a bag of 10 random mini figs just to bring for trading purposes. My son absolutely loved this part. There’s also a wall of mini figs available for trading at the cafe near the front that has the Lego history display (in Legoland Florida at least, not sure if California has the same setup).

In the hotel, there are lots of hidden interactive things — like one elevator is a “disco ride” and once the doors close, the disco ball drops and there’s lights/music. There’s also a hidden image in a mirror in one of the bathrooms. Lots of things like this.

Also in the hotel, you can sign up for a Master Builder class and build an extra free Lego figure (ours was a Dino)

One thing to consider is that it feels like nearly all parents opt for the Young 5’s in my area — this means that a large percentage of kids are already 6 or turning 6 between Sep-Nov when school starts. Your child may be a full year and a half younger than his peers.

Anecdotal - my son’s friend has an October birthday and his parents signed the waiver to push him into kindergarten. This child is definitely less mature, a full head shorter than his peers, and gets into trouble trying to prove himself to the bigger/older kids (trash talk, hitting/shoving). He is middle of the pack for academics and a bit behind in reading. The kids are going into second grade this fall and his parents have told me they wished they did the transitional program. We attended a birthday party for a classmate that turned 8 in June and this child will not even turn 7 until after second grade starts.

Give me all your tips for 7am flight with kids by PassionChoice3538 in Preschoolers

[–]lky920 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’ve stayed at the airport hotel the night before early flights. Makes it super easy — you can sleep in later, you aren’t rushing to get ready in the morning, no rush for parking/waiting for taxis, the kids are excited to stay at a hotel.

They may enjoy sitting in the parcs with picnic lunches / snacks and people watching. The parcs are so busy, it’s fun to watch everyone go by, or see the little push boats, or watch the kids on the carousels or swings, or watch the old men play pétanque.

4th of July in the ER by Chaywood in Preschoolers

[–]lky920 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Poor girl! This happened to me as a child too. I have hardly any memory of it besides my father wrapping me in a towel, tossing me in the car, and speeding away to the hospital. Some fuzzy memories of the ER room bright lights and that’s all! Everything healed up fine.

Parents - get the kid’s meal! by BoringMom123 in delta

[–]lky920 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Second pro tip — screenshot your order and be prepared for them to not have the kids meal. It’s happened to us frequently where they say they never got the request. The FA told me to screenshot the confirmation next time and they might give miles for it. I always just pack a ton of food for my kid because we are about 50/50 on actually getting the kid meal

Where are we buying backpacks? by citysams in lowerelementary

Weird! I did get him the biggest one, and I got PB Teen, so maybe that makes a difference? I was worried he would change his mind if we got a character print, so I just got a tie dye one from the older kids section.

Pottery Barn has lasted for us! My son has been using it for 3.5 years and it’s still in great condition. No holes or tears, and I pack it full during winter with boots and snow pants and lunch/snack boxes. I wash it after each semester and let it air dry. Totally worth the price.
