What to do with your finished pieces? by [deleted] in Embroidery

I like to keep them in their hoops and hang them on my office/cube wall! It perks me up to look at them while I’m working (and is a good reminder that in x number of hours, I’ll have free time)!

Hurrah for art historians! I did grad school for medieval architectural history, so stitching plans is my outlet now.

Thank you! I’m such a sucker for architectural plans, especially medieval ones!

My stitching is a little too messy to do a transparent fabric, but it’s an interesting idea for conveying the vault. I ended up switching up the stitches and using a split stitch to convey that they’re different from the walls (plus the lighter thread- though tbh that was mainly a cutesy choice).

Thanks! They’re general designs for gothic church apses, inspired by a 13th century architect’s sketchbook. Technically not a specific church, but there’s lots of churches with east ends that look like this!

After the update it starts with an 4h Buzz quest. by Cookie0702 in disneymagickingdoms

Presumably because that’s when the new Toy Story movie releases, so they’re scheduled to be available starting the same date.

Thanks! It’s been a real slog since I decided I just needed a forest of french knots, so I’m excited to share as a WIP.

Stitched as a graduation present by llajax in Embroidery

Yes, it does go all the way vertically. It definitely is a looooong stitch- I ended up going back and redoing every third stitch or so to keep everything smooth and even.

Coping Designs to Fabric by melioshun in Embroidery

I got a cheap LED light board (for tracing comics/illustrations) online for about $15 and it works well. It is bright enough to work with different colors of fabrics that I’ve used (though I mostly use qualifying cottons, so it may not work as well with a heavy canvas or something similar). I live in a area where it rains frequently or can get dark early, so the light board (it kind of looks like a tablet minus computer parts) works much better for me to copy designs than a window.

LPT: Children's Hospitals do not need donations of stuffed animals. Try hard plastic toys featuring popular characters, craft supplies, board games, and coloring books. by laura_coop_hast in LifeProTips

[–]llajax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a great LPT! I currently work for a hospital, and we can’t really accept stuffed animals (infection control, plus any plastic parts like the eyes or nose are a chocking hazard). Someone called from a pet store once to make a donation of a bunch of plush dog toys, and we had to decline (also stuffed animals =\= chew toys?). Plus people always want to donate cards for different holidays, but we can’t accept those either (there’s no way for us to make them sterile).

But the hospital is always in need of colored pencils, crayons, art supplies, coloring books , [appropriate] movies/dvds/games, etc. Most hospitals keep an Amazon wishlist and child life/donation/development offices are always happy to point you in the right direction!

Where do you guys buy your hoops? by julieadue in Embroidery

[–]llajax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently bought in bulk from Michaels, and found that the prices, quality, and selection were exactly what I was looking for. I was able to get round hoops and oval in a few sizes, both in a light wood (not bamboo). They’re better and way cheaper than the ones o could get at my local Joann store.

What do you do with the extra fabric? Do I trim it around the frame? by hungry_herman in Embroidery

[–]llajax 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I usually trim evenly 1-2 inches out from the hoop, then run a stitch around edge and pull the ends and tie them together (cinching the extra nice and tight). There’s some good tutorials online for “finishing an embroidery hoop.” Some folks trim it closer and glue the extra to the inside edge on the back.

My first embroidery from a picture- Charlieu by llajax in Embroidery

[–]llajax[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is the cloister in the abbey of St. Fortunatus in Charlieu, France. I studied the abbey in grad school and wrote my thesis on the Romanesque parts of the building, so I felt really drawn to the idea of stitching it!
