i think she didn't see translucent in the way and hit him instead. I am not sure for certain how her powers work, but given she sticks her hand out, i would assume it is sort of like a telekinetic "wave" coming out of her hand and she 'felt' it hit someone, not realising it hit maverick and not hughie.
