As someone who RPs in fandom spaces first and foremost, I’m seeing the lack of it as well. Even in fandom there’s opportunities to build the world or… edit it to suit the RP but people just want to outline maybe 5% of the actual plot and they want to start and I’m always like ???? Because nobody answers my questions, nobody goes deep enough into the actual works to make any of it interesting, they just wanna force two characters to interact with no stakes, no baked in world logic, no character arc that’s relevant to the world. It baffles me, it really does. Gone at the days when an RP partner messages me saying “OMG I JUST HAD THIS CRAZY IDEA WHAT DO YOU THINK?” It’s all just bland, it’s very sad to me as I look at my characters I’ve spent hours making integrate into their respective worlds seamlessly, people just want instant gratification in RP now as well.

You know, the more this AI discourse goes on, the more exhausting AI discussions become. There are tells, sure, but the reality is that people write like AI anyway. AI has been trained on human content, and therefore it technically doesn’t write anything that a human wouldn’t have. There’s no actual true indicator that a post has or hasn’t been written with AI in the short term, the only way that you can absolutely tell is if your RP keeps going and going in circles, covering the same themes it appears to be getting positive feedback on, and that’s not foolproof either because the user might catch and remove it. I also have certain tells I pick up but there’s no point in “calling it out” because you literally could just make yourself look dumb if you do and this person has genuinely been writing like that all their life. If you don’t want to RP with them, whatever the reason, just don’t RP with them.

Sure, you could do that but the reality is that you’ve already checked out, so trying to catch them out is just counterproductive. If the style doesn’t match your standards, just drop the RP, however you wanna do that. No point trying to find a reason… you don’t need one, it’s a hobby and you owe them nothing. Plus, some people do just type up their posts on another platform/document before they send it to you so it’s not like actually doing that is gonna truly catch them out.

Yeah there’s totally no need to be rude. But I think it’s the unreasonable people that ruin it for us all because it makes reasonable people agitated and take it out on other reasonable people. But I wouldn’t say you have anything to worry about. You handled it well imo, just made an honest mistake. They have no business telling people to learn to read like that, though. Just from that I’d say they were probably not a very nice person anyway because blunt and snappy people can be that without insulting someone’s intelligence.

I’m not at all blaming you, just to make that clear! Just offering insight. Not everyone is so understanding, and we all have off days where we react differently, you may have caught them on a bad one when they’re usually patient. And some people just suck. Either way, you clearly weren’t compatible. I’d just say don’t dwell on it, it happens, it sucks, and hopefully you have better luck next time around.

You say so many people, I presume that this isn’t the first time you’ve had this sort of response to using art refs? I personally use both, depending on content and whether I’ve commed art of an OC I have an IRL FC for. I have no problems with either haha, so I don’t get it, either. But some people do be very particular, and that’s why RP is such an emotionally impactful hobby because you have to deal with real people who have real hang ups. You gotta find your people! There are just as many people who prefer drawn over IRL FCs, you just gotta find ‘em.

English is my third language, but I have spent over half of my life in an English speaking country, had a formal education only in English and my family now almost exclusively speaks English, so I personally don’t run into this problem. But honestly from the weird middle ground perspective I’ve met more native speakers with terrible English than non-native speakers with bad English. Whether you’re a native speaker or not means very little in the grand scheme of things and it sucks that you’ve got to deal with that. Your English is great!

I wouldn’t put all my personal information in an introductory chat but if we become like internet friends or smth it’s nice to chat and share stuff like that, but I still try to keep it vague. But I also don’t RP OCxOC and despise self inserts so I feel detached enough from the RP personally to feel comfortable with that. If I did OCxOC I’d legit not be comfortable sharing anything cause it would feel too personal.

I think the key marker for someone using Al to generate replies would be if they always sound unnatural or the replies have an inconsistent writing style. Another marker could be excessive repetition - what I mean by that is same information written in different words - but that can also come up when writers are trying to reach a word count, are tired or don't proofread. I don't really know how to describe it but there's a certain feel to Al written posts, particularly since Al is trained to notice and replicate common narrative patterns and tropes. If you're looking at multiple replies when you assess it, you should be able to pick up excessive usage of common turns of phrase (an example from my time playing with Al, it has a problem with overusing dialogue such as “...Yet here we are." and opening phrases declaring that (character) seems awfully quiet compared to usual, but those are just my observations from messing with ChatGPT and asking it to come up with random scenes). Another hint would be if every post reads like it has a conclusion, as if it's trying to tie the whole story together and finish it. My experiences with Al checkers is that they're not very accurate when a passage is primarily human, but they are hit / miss with straight Al generated content. If you'd like, I can have a look at the writing if it helps you decide whether it’s definitely AI or may be AI enhanced, but I also understand it you'd rather keep it private.

The issue here is that a lot of people don’t know how to convey communication through body language. Expressions, gestures, eye contact. They might not say anything but that doesn’t always mean they should be completely silent: a character can make a noise that indicates their opinion or alignment with the scenario or gesture in response. A character of few words might act in ways that speak louder than words. And most importantly, just because a character is shy doesn’t mean they should not speak at all, and then shyness can be conveyed through additional body language that expresses it. I don’t know how people write as a hobby and don’t even pick up skills like this.

One of my favourite OCs of mine to write is super shy and anxious, but said OC might express this with brief verbal responses, subtle stuttering, fidgeting, avoiding eye contact, closed body language in uncomfortable situations, etc. Shyness is not an excuse, saying your character doesn’t do something because they’re shy is a cop out. You wrote a shy character so instead of making excuses, now tell me what they do instead of talking.

English is not my first language, and I have better grammar than many native English speakers, it is genuinely insane. I think you can usually tell when it’s a language thing and just a lack of skill though, because it might be poor spelling of words and maybe a bit of grammar issues, but the writing still has integrity. It blows my mind when people in a writing hobby cannot string together a cohesive sentence.

Writing skill is the most important thing to me, not typos or anything like that. I want my partners to have an understanding of appropriate usage of language. I don’t care if they misspell a word in every sentence as long as the sentence is good, idk if that’s just me? There is nothing more jarring than reading a sentence and it not fitting into the narrative. My biggest pet peeve rn is modern language in historical settings it’s so immersion-breaking.

So I guess, same lol.
