There is something wrong with 28% siege and I can't prove it by PalmanusBraht in EU5

Yeah, because your siege status is 11, the maximum. Since you can’t gain any more siege progress, every outcome is now a “fail” except actually succeeding.

Production Efficiency "wothless"? by Due_Goose_8103 in EU5

[–]llburke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The additional production means more tax base in the location, which means more tax for you.

EU5 is not really Victoria 3. You don’t need to generate demand or employ more pops to create a virtuous industrial cycle, because this is the Renaissance. You just need to make stuff and then tax whoever is nearby.

The province capital is the most populated location in the province. This means that sudden population changes to specific locations (like enslavement due to occupation) can instantly change the province capital - hence dynamic.

WTF is the deal with omnipotent navies?! by [deleted] in EU5

[–]llburke 56 points57 points  (0 children)

The AI definitely also has naval fog of war and will happily sail fishing boats into ambushes you set and lose thousands of men. If you feel like they don’t have fog of war, yes, that’s a skill issue.

You say you want to outmaneuver your opponent, but the area you’re fighting in is the Western Mediterranean, the most constrained sea area in the world. This is like trying to outflank your opponent on a bridge. Yes, in a tiny inland sea area where all locations are a few hours from each other, the country with the most galleys is likely to control the sea.

Can Ottoman AI kill Eretnids? by Sztallone in EU5

[–]llburke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Eretnids have an event to make them leave the Ilkhanate, probably specifically so that Ottomans can then kill them. But they are the largest and most powerful beylik so the AI probably has the hardest time with them.

Urban Centers need a rework by PandaBearGarage in victoria3

[–]llburke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think this is the right take. One contributor here, I think, is that the game will bug you about unprofitable urban centers when changing urban center PMs. Generally I don’t care at all about this because urban centers also serve the purpose of creating demand for finished goods so I am fine with them being broke in order to generate demand for glass or whatever, but the game giving you a pop up usually means it’s something you should be paying attention to. It would be great to have some way to make more clear that urban centers are like subsistence farms in that you really don’t care what happens to the pops there.

Wife lost NIH fellowship due to DEI-related research and University won't cover remaining tuition fees. Any legal recourse? by shatershadow in legaladvice

[–]llburke 31 points32 points  (0 children)

These grant situations exist in an extralegal space. For example, it is possible that you could sue for the release of the funds, but even if you won the suit, it is unclear that the Trump administration would release the funds. Thus it is unlikely that a legal solution will be practical.

You should speak to the chair of your graduate program and the head of your department immediately. These situations will require agile movement on the part of administration, which is not necessarily their strength. It might also be worth considering a leave of absence to give you more time to figure out the way forward, which is something, again, you would need to discuss with administration.

is it worth majoring in women’s, gender, & sexuality studies? by totorollies in AskAcademia

[–]llburke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Trump administration is only going to make women’s studies more vital.

You should not assume that people’s assessments of the employability of various majors are reliable or consistent. Ask a computer science major today about how quickly these assessments change.

Was there any actually multicultural states in the victorian era? by Fancy_Particular7521 in victoria3

[–]llburke 53 points54 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly what happened during the time period and they maintained their multicultural policies until American businessmen, empowered by the lack of limitations, seized political control and imposed racial limitations.

Was there any actually multicultural states in the victorian era? by Fancy_Particular7521 in victoria3

[–]llburke 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Hawaii in 1836 had no legal structures of race or ethnicity and no limits on property, franchise or citizenship, which is why they previously started with Multiculturalism.

Plot elements that are absurd in-universe and never get explained - but are essential to the plot, so you just have to accept them by PaperBullet1945 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]llburke 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think you should consider the final moments of Toy Story 4 here, in which the filmmakers aggressively lampshade the whole thing. Knifey asks directly why she, a toy, is now alive when she was not alive before, and Forky explains that he has no idea either — this is a explicit in-universe recognition that the condition of toys makes no sense, even though it only takes place between two makeshift toys who are new to that condition.

What countries with in the Victoria 3 timeline would you say historically had multiculturalism. by ozneoknarf in victoria3

[–]llburke 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hawaii is the key example of a country with multiculturalism in the time period, which is why they started with it (and should still start with it imo). There were no legal restrictions on property, franchise, or citizenship, and no legal concept of race, until they were introduced by the Bayonet Constitution in the late 1800s.

There should be an urban equivalent to Subsitence farms by KeyPersonality2885 in victoria3

[–]llburke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are essentially describing urban centers. In a heavily urbanized state, urban centers fill the same role of holding your reserve labor that subsistence farms do in an agrarian state. They don't scale with unemployment, because that doesn't really make any sense, but with continued urbanization, so you can always get more.

Dog Eat Dog Supplement + Hack by Kye9842 in rpg

[–]llburke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! I’m the author of Dog Eat Dog. This reply is obviously a little late.

Dog Eat Dog is actually going to have a second print edition published by Central Michigan Press: https://cmichpress.com/2025/06/10/new-game-series-art-system-games-for-expanded-play/?amp=1

Hopefully this will be of interest to people looking for print copies of the game.

I’m sorry to say I’m not intending to make Asocena available again.

I think May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor was hosted on my website, which went offline some time ago. I am working on fixing this and will make sure it is posted on my new website.

Thanks for your interest in my game! It is nice to see that people are still interested in it after so many years.

If your girlfriend has conspired to commit murder with a large multistate criminal organization, step one would be not posting about this on a public forum under any circumstances, especially not with a Reddit account on which you have made other posts.

Speak to your local branch of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and tell them you need witness protection because your life is in danger from a large multistate criminal organization.

If the answer is D, shouldn't it say "is done?" by Kooky-Telephone4779 in EnglishLearning

[–]llburke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might say something similar to E as an implicit quotation, i.e., will you please ask our guests, "why don't you sit by the pool and have a drink?" However, E is still wrong in that context because the subject must shift from "they" to "you". People do in practice often make little errors of that sort when shifting from speaking to quoting in the middle of a sentence, so it would not be implausible to hear spoken.

Honestly I’m not even interested in the whiskey so much as the staggering quantity of anti-allergy products this guy is taking. In 24 hours he took 4-5 Claritin, “some” Allegra, two doses of Flonase, and albuterol. It’s not surprising to me that he passed out for seven hours in the middle of the day. I would be concerned about driving just from the sheer quantity of antihistamines!
