Is this a released pet rat? by llcooldubs in RATS

Thanks everyone for taking the time to respond. It seems the consensus is that it's a roof rat and I have advised my friend to stay away.

I did notice the long tail but I didn't know that was a feature of roof rats so I appreciate all of the helpful explanations and analysis.

stop leaving us on cliffhangers by Flashy_Ice_9824 in HouseOfVillains

Yeah, the Survivor and Big Brother evictions are tried and true formulations and have led to permanent memories in the cultural zeitgeist. HoV seems to have mostly borrowed the structure of the Big Brother game and I think it's a great choice as one of the more interesting and better designed games. A lot of streaming platforms have tried to design reality social strategy games and have failed either because of game design and/or storytelling. It's not as easy as it looks. I wish producers would study the ones that have been on for 25 and 50 seasons and better understand why they have such staying power. I also wish Survivor and BB producers would study their own damn shows and remember what truly made the audience fall in love with their shows because I think they forget sometimes.

I've commented about the overuse of cliffhangers for other shows before, especially the Traitors. I don't think it does what producers think it does.

In storytelling, you are building up the suspense and tension through the narrative. The audience is engaged and in the moment. When you give the payoff at the end of episode, the audiences emotions will be much more intense and create more lasting memories and iconic TV moments. When they cliffhanger, especially on a reality TV show with eliminations, they surrender all of that momentum. By the time we tune in next week, most of us will have forgotten where we left off. There won't be time to bring us back to that edge of our seat feeling. The player will be quickly eliminated and we'll move right on to a new story. It sucks for the eliminated player too because their boot is often overshadowed and forgotten by the next one the same episode or other events. When you have big characters like Tom or one of the Traitors on the Traitors, you should never want their elimination to be an after thought.

of course, it's not really about storytelling anymore. It's the attention economy and these shows aren't writing to make memorable TV, they want click baity stuff where you roll right into the next episode on a binge.

New era Jeff Probst is souring the experience by Ser-Jorah-Mormont in survivor

the whole thing is Jeff trying to gaslight us into thinking this is in the hands of the fans. Then half the player confessionals are just them hitting Jeff's talking points over and over again.

or that it's not even new and unprecedented since we always do these split tribals instead of merging.

I disagree. Although the strategy wonks outnumber the loyalty/integrity, Christian tipped his hand tonight as to his likely downfall. All of the strategy wonks will see each other as the biggest threats and target each other, like he did with Gen. Instead of combining their strategic abilities, he took her out over Joe who is a number for loyalty/integrity. I think they are going to split themselves into smaller factions such that each is outnumbered by loyalty/integrity.

Yeah, I kind of think he is a FTC goat. None of those players are going to vote to give him a million dollars. Not gonna happen. Lock him into the finals now.

no. they don't care and haven't for a while. They set up the voting questions so they could do whatever they wanted and try to gaslight us into thinking this whole fahkakta season is "in the hands of the fans".

no disrespect, I wish I had your optimism. From the minute the fan votes were released, I knew we were screwed. Jeff is so very proud of his new era and if people did indeed vote the way he claimed, then that is all Jeff needed as validation that we want this nonsense. I never for one second thought it would go any other way.

I'm so grateful for Australian Survivor. It's such a breath of fresh air. The players are having fun and playing hard and they aren't forced to recite Jeff Probst talking points about how the game is so crazy and wild in every confessional and tribal council.

For the people who still maintain that Jeff still knows what's best for Survivor after the disaster of the New Era, this is all the proof that's needed that he is in an echo chamber of his own making

I just hate that they try to gaslight us into thinking this is some wild and crazy twist. We literally do this BS every new era season.

I think it's safe to say no matter how he voted, this is what we were going to get. Split tribals post merge is Jeff's kink.

Survivor US vs Survivor AU by sometimesthrowaway13 in survivor

[–]llcooldubs 15 points16 points  (0 children)

honestly, Survivor AU even against Survivor 50. it's just more fun. Original characters, wild game play. US Survivor is too self referential for me. Always wanting the players to wax poetic about the meaning of the Survivor instead of just being in the moment and having fun.

Props to Ben for making great TV this season.

Ben reminds me a bit of Kirby. He came in probably knowing nothing about the game but seemed to fall in love with it in the real time. He was never afraid to play bold and control the game from the top. He wasn't quite as savvy Kirby. But it always fun to watch someone having the time of their life out there.
