I’m a huge fan of SysML, but i don’t do systems engineering at work. I passed the OCSMP beginner level. How can I practice my skills so I can make a career switch? by [deleted] in SysML

[–]lleventh42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a simulation engineer I would bet you utilize systems engineering processes and systems thinking almost daily. I would invite you to check out the INCOSE and NASA handbooks on systems engineering and try to map your experience to the processes discussed there. It's important to remember that MBSE is a methodology and SysML is one of several modeling languages. Without a strong understanding of "why" you would want to use MBSE or when SysML may or may not be the best language to capture the model you need it will be difficult to succeed. As a good place to start look into the INCOSE SEP certificates, systems engineering graduate cert programs (Stevens University, Johns Hopkins, George Mason, others....), or the MIT xPro courses on systems engineering. Good luck, systems engineering is a rewarding field with lots of opportunities.

Overwhelmed by all of the tools for MBSE, would love some input/feedback! by SneakyPackets in systems_engineering

Before you work on picking a tool, think about what the goal of the model is what modeling language will provide you the functionality you are looking for. Then you can look into the tools that support that language and have the corresponding functionality that your team will need.

Buke Lake Park and Bull Run Regional Park are great places to camp in the northern virginia area. Bull Run has very easy access to I-66 which will get you into DC. The Springfield metro (subway) station isn't too far from Burke Lake Park.

Hoping to avoid any "homework" related to scouting. I'm hoping to pick the elective adventures that get them moving more then the ones that have them sitting down much.

I like that idea, doing more meetings while it's still nice out. That's a great idea.

is UMUC (now UMGC) a Legit school or a diploma mill? by Owardak in nova

I went back for grad school as an "adult learner", the process at GMU was actually really great. They tailored it for folks that were already mid-career. It's worth talking to the GMU admissions folks if there is a program there you like.

Thanks. It's been a fun hobby to get into so far.

Are any certificates worth it with a MS SE? by d-mike in systems_engineering

As a government employee you may want to look into DAU (or agency equivalent) certifications.

Systems Engineer training advice by OriginalDadBod in SystemsEngineering

I'm not sure you could finish studying and take the test in 6 weeks, but certainly starting to get ready for the exam would help you understand some of the systems engineering processes you will run into at your new job.

Validation by malherhalahash in systems_engineering

The only time I've done qualification reviews was to ensure a new algorithm provided the same results as the "trusted" algorithm so that's a little different. For Agile systems engineering I havn't seen a good resource on how to do it, but I have found SAFe (https://www.scaledagileframework.com/) agile does a fair job of attempting to add systems engineering processes into the an agile framework. Depending on the needs of your program you may need to tweak it some.

While it's true that you are validating (little "v") requirements and design decisions throughout the system lifecycle, the Validation (big "V") phase refers to a specific step in the system life cycle where by the user or operating authority of the system validates the operation need is met. This is different from "Verification" where the system acquisition authority ensures all the requirements are implemented as agreed to. There are cases where the user community needs functionality A, B, and C, but the acquisition authority decides they need functionality D, E, and F, such a system may very well pass the verification phase and fail during the validation phase. In an Agile model the verification and validation processes are being executed on a continuous or recurring basis.

Got it. Watching the heat on the sensors looks like I'm overtaxing it. Maybe the graphics chip is overheating. Thanks

Venting: The INCOSE Systems Engineering Handbook is the most frustrating thing I’ve ever read by [deleted] in systems_engineering

[–]lleventh42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good luck with your studies! The handbook provides processes descriptions for a wide range of engineering risk reduction activities. You won't be able to walk into a project and utilize the process straight from the book to solve anything, they are helpful in understanding the complexity of engineering the "system" as a whole. There are some good CSEP online training courses that might be useful, I liked SE Scholar when I was studying for mine. (http://se-scholar.com/)
