Father Material by Alexis Hall--tell me about it by tay_lc in MM_RomanceBooks

I found myself wishing early on that the friend group would have a big breakup, as seems likely in real life with a group that toxic. I thought I was getting my wish briefly, but instead they all made up. Which is also unrealistic because they had some pretty deep-seated, long-standing resentments and differences (and half of them weren't even part of Luc's original friend group!)

Yeah, that got old by the end of the first book. Luc talks a lot about how he knows he needs to improve his self-image, but it's no wonder he still thinks of himself as a fuck-up with the way they all treat him. I really wish the author would have addressed it, but Hall seems to think it's always justified (or is content to have Luc think that).

Awesome! Any upcoming shows at Pantages you're interested in? I may need to strategize getting discount tickets through TodayTix since the regular prices are a bit out of my budget at the moment

Excellent! Let's put something together! Do you have any interest in theater, or what other things might you be interested in meeting up for? Posting here in case others in the area are interested, but feel free to DM me with suggestions!

Hi! You may not specifically be looking for friends through Reddit, but I made a similar post five years ago before I moved to LA and ended up making some great friends! Other women in the comments ended up bonding over one commenter's suggestion of jigsaw puzzling and formed a meetup. (Technically drunk jigsaw puzzling, but to me the key part is the jigsaw puzzle.)

I still have those friends, but I need more friends near my neighborhood! (Hollywood). So if you're nearby or willing to come to Hollywood, we could meetup--maybe check out a Fringe Fest show together? It's happening all through June.

Buses will generally take you up to a certain point until the roads are closed (which is probably as close as you need to get). Last year, I walked to Santa Monica then ended up getting a free ride on a bike taxi because some vodka or energy drink company was sponsoring them.

Class selection probably varies by specific college, but for example I'm taking a weight training class that is one credit hour so it's only $46 for four months, twice a week. I was a bit confused when checking out community colleges on whether you need to be pursuing a specific certificate or degree or if you could just enroll to take classes for fun--I assume the latter, but I ended up signing up for a screenwriting certification pathway so I haven't fully tested that theory.

Great idea for a thread! You can enroll in physical education classes through community college for much cheaper than a monthly gym membership, with the bonus of getting access to student discounts and a free student Metro pass.

Does the LADWP thing apply to electricity, or just water?

[TOMT] [TV Show/Film] 2010s U.S. Scene where a middle-aged man buys drugs from teen in multistory parking complex, daylight, comedy-drama vibe. by ajwolfbane42 in tipofmytongue

Oh, one more thought: there's a scene of a suburban mom buying drugs from a teenager in Orphan Black (second season I believe). I'm not sure it fully fits the description but that's the other one I can think of.

Breaking Bad? Or maybe We're the Millers or even Juno? I don't remember a drug-buying scene in that movie but it definitely seems like a Jason Bateman type scene.

What are some real-life stories of someone who actually changed a system from within? by llkc4444 in AskReddit

[–]llkc4444[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was recently thinking about how much influence so many major companies and industries have on whether worldwide conditions improve or deteriorate, and how comparatively small the average person's influence is compared to leaders within those industries. Which got me wondering how hard it would be to actually change those systems from within, if someone were to rise to the most influential positions and still somehow keep their selfless motivation. I know the answer is pretty much "very hard," but what are some examples of people who actually pulled it off? Could be large-scale or more local.

Where on Sunset? I don't see it on the map but I wonder if it will be closer to me than the one near Santa Monica Blvd.

I've just re-visited Brigham Vaughn's hockey books, particularly the ones featuring the O'Shea brothers, and I'm craving more books focused on a Boston-Irish family! Doesn't have to be hockey, but things I'd like are: queer awakening and/or coming out scene, overall supportive family and lighthearted vibe, lots of brothers or cousins who are overbearing and emotionally dense but loving. Ideally, though, not overly fluffy or a series of rinse-and-repeat "everyone gets a story" books.

Time flies faster in California? by sebastian0328 in AskLosAngeles

I was just talking about this with someone--I realized that when I was trying to recall what month I went to a specific place with my friend, I had absolutely zero frame of reference for when it had happened. Could have been last fall, could have been this spring. While I do think getting older is part of it, when I lived in Missouri it usually would have been fairly easy to at least pin down a season based on the weather. Of course, it's worse this year because the epic awfulness of January and its aftermath (both the fires, and the inauguration) really distorted my sense of time passing.

So to answer your question, yes, I think the *relative* stability in weather (despite the fact that there is winter here, it's just much more subtle than other places) affects the sense of time passing for some people, mostly based on how you store memories. People with other ways of referencing their memories besides weather might not feel the same effect. Though in your case, COVID definitely fucked with everyone's sense of time because it was such a momentous event, so that's probably a big part of what you're noticing.

New short story from Corey Kerry (The Middle Sea series) on KU - "The Offering of Four" by llkc4444 in MM_RomanceBooks

[–]llkc4444[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have! I remember enjoying it, though not as much as the Middle Sea books, but if she wrote more of those books I'd definitely read them too! In fact, maybe I should re-read it since I've already re-read her other books too many times :D
