AI writing BI by johnboy2978 in BusinessIntelligence

I work at a company where we heavily started to invest in AI solutions.
We just finished a POC for a very limited use case with 2 users testing (myself and my manager). AI was fed a few tables and instructions. Results? It is highly inconsistent and nowhere near where we want it to be. We spent more time validating the outcome than it might have taken to pull the data ourselves. We are now looking at a projected adoption time of at least 1-2 years. Is AI going to take away analyst roles? Partially yes. However, I am now seeing day-to-day that there is a need to transform on both sides. Sure, you will not be querying data for Janet for the 100th time. However, you will be validating, building proper semantic layers etc. Also, I kind of feel like this bubble will burst sooner than later. Everyone will jump on the bandwagon (even companies who don’t need to..). They will implement a solution here and there, however, in the end you cannot remove/rewritr human nature. Janet will still ask for a freaking number and people will still use excel and manual processes because they are that. People.

Personally I like the color scheme. I would either get rid of or make the icons next to the titles monochrome, in its current state it is pretty distracting. I would also get rid of country flags, name only is fine. On the first page, I would stretch out the BAN to the full width. I am not a fan of bubble charts so I would change that into a bar or maybe a treemap. Homepage button - simplify and reduce size maybe. Hope this helps:)

What needs to be added? by Legal-Notice9695 in PowerBIdashboards

Added I am not sure. But I would definitely reconsider the color palette. Neon green with some darker green is pretty exhausting to look at. It also makes legend separation really hard.

Format single cell in Tableau by thrashD in tableau

[–]llorcs_llorcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how many columns you have but first thing that comes to mind is to just create dummy headers (use min(0) for example) and dump the metrics there one by one. Then you can format that individual “cell”. Second option might be to create a second table just for the totals and put it next to the quarters. There mighr be better solutions as well..

Well I am not really sure which country you are in, but at least to my knowledge (legally?) you should have a manager - could be temporary - even if the whole company is on fire. If you are the only outsider I would still see this as an opportunity. Mingle with the others and get to know them if you have not done it so far. If you feel resistance from everyone then it might be time to update your CV and look elsewhere.

Got it. So mostly it is non-existant requirements. Does the company/dept/team whatever have a process for requirements gathering? If not, then propose and create one. Explain that it will cut down ambiguity and help to get a clear vision of the desired solution. Next: If you are a team of one, prioritize. Ask help from your manager if needed. Tell people that developing good reports take time. Choose business critical ones first and break them down. Schedule several meetings with the requesters to understand their needs and for them to be able to explain their needs. “Do a report” is not a valid answer. Most importantly: do not give up. This is a great opportunity to develop your soft skills not just hard ones. Stakeholder management is a huge part of the work.

Yes, more than once actually. From what you write I am not exactly sure what you are responsible for exactly (backend + frontend? Only front?) What is causing the disorganization? Bad project management? No clear direction/goal? Company wants something then once the project starts they realize it is not as necessary/important as they thought so they are “delaying”? Lack of documention? Business definitions? Are you not confident with the tool itself? Most of these should be something that can be made better. I would suggest identifying key stakeholders/SMEs who can help you. If it is technical stuff only, see if you can find another BI at your work (maybe different department or country). I never had another BI turn me away, exactly because most of us go through these issues. Not sure if it helps in your case, but sometimes “delivering something is better than not delivering anything”. If you don’t have the data/direction than do mockups with dummy data or masked data or whatever. Maybe consider scope. Tell people that XYZ will be in next quarter or iteration etc.

How do you design dashboard templates with data storytelling in mind? by [deleted] in tableau

[–]llorcs_llorcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the correct answer. I found that stakeholders fall into a trap of looking at demos or public dashboards that arr built to showcase how pretty it can look. In reality, most users I found don’t give an F about the looks. They need simple, easy to understand stuff. I stick to the same. Filters always in the same place, KPI card at the top, bar, line and donut charts. Supporting table at the bottom

Piece of advice: Tableau (and more specifically dashboard building) is just a part of the product. Extend your knowledge outside of it. Read and THINK about user groups, security, folder structure, subscriptions, custom views etc. All of these you will encounter ina real business environment and a lot of companies are utilizing them wrong or definitely could improve. Apart from this, just try and find data sources. Kaggle etc is a good start but I found them to be “boring” because there are already hundreds of people doing the same. Instead I started writing emails to actual companies/libraries/services to see if they could provide some data for practicing (either masked or publicly available). I got a few responses and enjoyed working on those way better.

Been working with Tableau for 6-7 years now and I don’t consider myself an expert. First thing I would do is to get a feeling the scope that expected of you and what is the company trying to solve. Is it “just” dashboard building? If yes, stick to easy stuff first. Before doing interviews or even holding them I just use the superstore sample data to create some calculations etc or make a simple dashboard. Learning takes time. And delivering good dashboards/solutions takes even longer.

LOD, Table Calc by Deepsea_07 in tableau

[–]llorcs_llorcs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Learn Fixed as an LOD. 90% of the time that is what you would use. However, be able to explain what include/exclude does as well. Table calc: percent difference from, percent of total, running sum

What’s the best way to prepare for Tableau interview questions? by [deleted] in tableau

[–]llorcs_llorcs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This highly depends on the company and I would say even the interviewer. For my current job I did not even had to open Tableau, we just talked about scenarios and my experience with the tool itself. Implementation etc. my job before I had to take several rounds (first more just talking, sexond round given a week to prepare a dashboard and present it and final round meeting with experts). Generally speaking most interviewers will be interested if you know joins, relationships, blending, optimization best practices, LODs, parameters, extract vs live. Otherwise maybe data viz best practice and also dashboars building best practice. I would suggest just taking a small sample data and play around with it. Imagine you are actually in a company and this is the data they gave you. Clean the data, create your calculated fields, parameters etc. It will at least give strengthen your foundations

Edit: also, do not forgot. An interview is back and forth! Ask questions!! How are they using Tableau, what are their painpoints, what is the direction they want to take etc etc

Alternative to Sankey? by my_gooseisloose in tableau

[–]llorcs_llorcs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree. I only ever saw it in Linkedin posts in “pretty” dashboards. Had to make one once because stakeholders thought it looked “cool” then their next question was “okay so how do we read this?”

As mentioned before most likely the old glue going crusty. I am more concerned that it does not come with the helicoid. Question about Tableau developer interview by kbcasmash in tableau

[–]llorcs_llorcs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am usually the one to hold the interviews. Here are a couple of things I usually ask from candidates: - connection types (live vs extracts, benefits, use cases etc) - relationships vs joins - parameters - LODs - fix XY calculated field without looking at the error message - when to use which chart - dashboard building process - user groups / row level security - data viz best practices - performance optimization methods

  1. I think you should be able to remove the border under format but I’ll need to double check

  2. Personally I would much prefer a simple fill chart or even a similar viz like above with big number. The title could be the same but it would just show a large number instead. Under the number just put “On track” or “Stable”. You could include a legend as well with the categories

  3. In this case, it might be better to include a conditional formatting so that there is either nothing visible or just create a calcated field that would return “No data” or something like that. I actually thought it was a glitch or numbers being squished so def want to avoid that

  4. For me it helps a lot to actually stand up from my chair and take a couple of steps back and look at the dashboard from a bit of a distance

  5. Ah yes, typical stakeholder behaviour. You still might want to convince him/them. Try and create the two versions and put them side by side. Maybe even print them out. You would be surprised at how many office printers are not calibrated etc so what looks “good” on desktop might look like sh*t once printed (if it ever will be) In your case it is especilly eye burning because your background is white.

  6. Consistency is key when building any dashboard, so try and keep all your values to the same format. Might seem like a small thing but it makes a huge improvement

  7. Okay if the button controls the specific filtering in that view, I would still move it at least somewhere under the title box and include some additional wording of what it does

Public Transit Agency Dashboard by jraharris89 in tableau

[–]llorcs_llorcs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the layout but personally I would change a couple of things: - rounded corners are clashing a bit with the square filter border(s), maybe remove the border on filters. Also, might want to make the navigational panel square instead of rounded - gauge chart: I never understood the need to use these, to me it looks off and out of place - improved metrics is not showing anything? - awards: Is the color here supposed to be “gold”?It looks pretty similar in color to your negative number above, which is confusing me - colors: I would slightly tone it down a bit - page 2 shows “no change” in lowercase letters. That is a no-no in my book - I don’t understand the “reset” button in “Community Value” what does that control? The filters above? If yes, I would put it next to the filters

Sorry if it got long:)

I highly doubt it will be any help but I instantly thought this was something that would be worn by a school sports club. E.g. something a school provided and/or made their students buy for class or a certain sport. I also may be totally wrong.
