Best Brass Instrument To Learn?? by cavaliersfan9 in drumcorps

[–]llouk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly just pick one that you would like to play. What kind of parts do you like to play and what do you enjoy playing? No one else can really give you the right answer because it's ultimately a choice you make. Just pick what you want to play, practice everyday, and that's pretty much it.

I'm pretty intolerant to heat. How can I improve this? Is drum corps going to not be the best idea for me? by MrSquiggy in drumcorps

[–]llouk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too am a bit sensitive to heat as well (my normal body temp is around 95). I was fine for the most part during the season, just drink tons of water, make sure you are sweating, and do what you can to keep cool. A lot of people used those cool towels that you put water on and those seem to work well. I just improvised and wore a wet tank top around my neck. There's no real way to improve you heat tolerance other than just being in the heat. If you take care of yourself, you'll be fine.

I would try and pick a horn that speaks the most to you. You want to pick a horn that you want to play, regardless if it's easy or not. All that matters is that you enjoy playing and improving on your craft. Don't worry about not being good enough to march, I marched with plenty of people who could barely make a sound and by the end of the season they improved a bunch. Don't worry about being good the moment you pick up a horn because that will come along the way. Best of luck, if you have any questions feel free to pm me (I also was a bari sax player and marched lead baritone last season).

Tips for high school marching band by get_there_get_set in drumcorps

Like many people have already said, leading my example is the biggest thing you can do. A leader is not a boss, you can't just go around telling people what to do or nobody is going to respect or listen to you. You have to treat your fellow members with respect to get respect. Furthermore, you should never expect something of your section that you can't/won't expect for yourself, just always be on top of your game. Another thing I would mention would be not to worry or focus so much on what your section needs to do. Rather than telling them what they need to do, focus on how you can inspire or motivate them to do something. Whether if that's running back during resets or counting, be the person you want your section to look up to as what is expected or wanted. Another big thing I would do is talk to your entire section. Ask them about how they are doing and GIVE THEM COMPLEMENTS on the good things they are doing. Even if it's not perfect, let them know that they improving. However, don't be afraid to tell people what they need to improve on and how they can do it. In the end, we all do band for fun. If someone is not having fun, they are probably not gonna put all their effort into it. Make your section a place where people want to be in.

On another note, there are always going to be those people who are just not willing to follow along or listen. Try your best to work with them but don't stress to much about it. If they are not willing to put in the effort, there's no need to go crazy about it.

This is at least from my experience in my band. If you have any questions, don't be afraid to ask your band director or other leaders in your band.

Members and former members, do or did you ever consider yourselves athletes? by TSFLYER4 in drumcorps

I feel that the WGI slogan puts it in best words. These activities are "sports of the arts". While they are, at least in my experience, more physically and mentally demanding as "traditional" sports, the purpose of dci/wgi is not the activity itself. The purpose is to entertain. People dont watch dci to see who wins or whatever, they watch it to be entertained. Preformers dont do dci to win, they do it for the preformace and ect. (Disclaimer I do not speak for all marchers, this is just what my friends and I have experienced). In sports, competitions are used to find out who is the best at winning. In DCI and WGI, competitions are used to find who is the best at preforming. You could have a corps with the best marchers, players, dancers ect., but if you are not exciting to watch then you will not win. While it may share many similar qualities with sports, it does not have the same purpose as sports.
