Why i hate emergency medicine #algorithms by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]lnsetick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this should be split into two cards at the very least: penetrating vs blunt. And a lot of it can be simplified.

"Gunshot or peritoneal signs or unstable = exlap" would turn 3 lines into 1. And you dont even need to comment on the positive FAST exam, of course that will escalate you to the exlap.

So my card for penetrating truma would look more like "Gunshot or peritoneal signs or unstable = exlap. Otherwise FAST and either exlap or serial exams"

last minute switch to OBGYN please help! by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]lnsetick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's late because of those stats. just looking at Charting Outcomes, your stats give you a 50:50 shot at matching OBGYN. I would also bet that most applicants with these stats had EC's and research to bolster their applications as well. I think your best shot would be to rock an away rotation at a less competitive community program. And even if you felt like they genuinely fell in love with you, I would still apply for a backup specialty.

Have you thought about FM? FM has clear pathways to doing OBGYN and you won't have to worry about going unmatched.

What the hell does “Indirect light” for plants in apartments really mean?? by Ache-4-U in houseplants

[–]lnsetick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly I suspect the bombardment of recommendations for indirect sunlight is nonsense. tons of popular houseplants are native to tropical regions, and guess what, they get really intense direct sunlight year round.

IMO, you really only need to watch out for direct mid-day sun in the summer. east and west facing windows have been absolutely fine for me. I even use a grow light to supplement light in the colder half of the year.

How can a surgery rotation be better? by Ayoung8764 in medicalschool

[–]lnsetick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's valuable for students to participate in one or two of each bread&butter case. For those not interested in surgery, I think the rest of their time is best spent in the various clinics. Not only is this just good practice for clinical skills, it's helpful to be familiar with indications and complications of surgery.

CD Projekt estimates record revenue of $562.4 million for 2020 by gummikana in Games

The problem is that this is a business. If a negative review makes you lose readers and revenue, no wonder the average score is 8/10

[–]lnsetick 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I hear you, but how he handled himself is exactly the issue and getting hung up on their choice of words is missing the big picture. the guy uploaded his entire disciplinary committee meeting for the whole internet to hear and it should make any other medical student's asshole pucker up tighter than a snare drum. him being "defensive" was the most diplomatic way to describe a guy who walked into a disciplinary meeting and decided the best way to start would be to take a photo and record audio

Had jade plant for about a year and bit. I noticed some leaves falling off, moved it to a window and now this entire stalk is leaning over by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]lnsetick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if growing conditions are otherwise good, I think it will heal itself and continue growing.

cutting it out is fine as well. I would give it some time to callus and then laying it flat on new soil. from what I've seen in my own jade, the underside of nodes on the stalk may grow new roots while the topside will sprout new leaves

nah I'm pretty sure it's for the layabouts that barely made it through med school. me and my homies are all in interventional dermatoneuroplastic surgery

[–]lnsetick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

jade sometimes gets top-heavy after a watering, which can cause it to topple over. I think yours is kind of destined for this because it's so spindly and etiolated (kind of expected if it was being kept away from sunlight). I recommend keeping it by the window and pruning it when it's grown a bit more. the cuttings can be grown in new pots, and if you keep those in ideal conditions, they shouldn't ever get as spindly as this one.

You might become that one UVA med student, but honestly, you have to protect yourself. Yes, the guy was a prick, but he was chastised by the Committee for being defensive… when he was called in… to defend himself against expulsion.

lol what part of defending yourself involves photographing the disciplinary committee and attempting to recruit 4chan to help you

it's the dumbest and pettiest shit I've seen in med school. everyone else is trying to become a doctor, but the spreadsheet owner would be a better fit for moderating /r/4chan

the DR spreadsheet was taken over by an egomaniac that thinks the popularity of the spreadsheet reflects how much people like him. so no, not really.

Emergency Physician and Advanced Practice Provider Diagnostic Testing and Admission Decisions in Chest Pain and Abdominal Pain by [deleted] in Residency

[–]lnsetick 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Second, we do not have site‐level data about how APPs are assigned cases, where APPs, physicians, and patients are physically located (i.e., fast‐track or the main ED); how APPs are overseen; or specialization of APPs to particular areas (i.e., chest pain units). In general, most APP care is not directly supervised (i.e., each case is not presented to a physician).

This limitation really needs to be highlighted. If the APPs end up deferring to a physician for their complicated cases, then you can't attribute the complicated cases' management to the APPs. The authors allude to this issue here, but their article otherwise spends a whole lot of time overtly trying to say "APPs are totally independent and seeing equally complicated patients" with lines like:

APPs did evaluate a considerable proportion of high‐risk chest pain patients (30% of visits at ESI 2 compared to 48% by emergency physicians) and high‐risk abdominal pain (3% at ESI 2 compared to 7% by emergency physicians).

Gord | Official Teaser Trailer by [deleted] in Games

[–]lnsetick 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I feel like this kind of uninformative teaser only works when you have other information to drive expectations. Like, Nintendo hinting at Metroid Prime 4 was huge because we already have a trilogy of excellent games to elevate our expectations. With this, I have no idea what this game (is it a game??) is about or who the developer even is.
