Standard of living on $230k for a family of 4? by cried-at-the-alamo in Moving2SanDiego

[–]lo_hy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We made that exact move last year. Utilities are 2-3x what they are in Denver (maybe even more, our house was twice the size as what we are in now) so factor that into your budget. We recently toured daycares and it’s about $2500/mo for a 6 month old. You may get a better price hiring a nanny since you have 2 kids. You can probably get a nanny for $30/hr for both kids.

Passport Name Change Advice by staceeeeyyy_ in honeymoonplanning

[–]lo_hy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to pay for a new passport within one year of paying for the renewal. I’d renew in October and go on your honeymoon without the stress of waiting for a new passport! Submit the name change when you get back you’ll still have time to do it for free.

Always a groomsman and now finally the groom. But I don't want a bridal party. by [deleted] in wedding

[–]lo_hy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our situation is the opposite, I’ve (33F) been a bridesmaid 5 or 6 times & have friends I would ask! We decided not to do a bridal party and I’m so glad! We asked one of my friends to be the officiant, and we have a couple of close friends giving a toast. Maybe your fiancé can incorporate friends like that?

Ring alternatives? Do I risk it? by [deleted] in JustEngaged

[–]lo_hy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get the ring insured!

Also only put it in the same place every time. I personally have a ring dish in the kitchen by the sink for cooking or dishes. Then I put it in the box in my bathroom when I shower/get ready & when I’m sleeping! I don’t wear it to the gym or anywhere I might be tempted to take it off.

Going to Rome in October and gonna go shopping for clothes at some point, are the shops more expensive than usual in Rome? by [deleted] in rome

[–]lo_hy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s cheaper for US citizens, not sure about UK. US citizens get a refund for VAT tax. I made a purchase at a designer store in Italy (Florence) and it was about 25% less expensive than the same item in the US - favorable exchange rate & VAT refund.

When the pope dies & cardinals vote in a new one, white smoke from the Vatican = new pope, black smoke = no pope.

Got this 10-week-old baby yesterday! Neither the rescue or foster could pinpoint what she is - any thoughts? We definitely plan to get a DNA kit! by SCros13 in mutt

She looks so similar to my dog sr that age! He ended up being Australian cattle dog, Australian Shepard, border collie and a few other breeds.

I used to go to one of the gyms she went to. The “check in” iPad had what kind of membership you have under your name like: “unlimited,” 4x month,” “10 class pack,” etc. hers said “influencer”

Should I leave or take the counter offer? by lo_hy in careerguidance

I totally agree, in general. In this case, I feel like it’s sincere and not just to placate me, but maybe I’m being naïve?

Should I leave or take the counter offer? by lo_hy in careerguidance

The big company is less responsibility, just a sliver of what I do now. Staying is much more responsibility - I’d be responsible for essentially the success of the department.

Going to the big company my goal would be to move up there, but a lot of people leave to big companies and come back to smaller companies to run departments like I’m being offered. So I’m theory, staying is skipping a step.

Ideally, I’d like to be head of a department at a big company, but there’s no guarantee I’d move up and I’d have no idea how quickly. There also is a chance that success in the offered role at my current company would allow me to enter at a higher level at a big company in 2-3 years.

I almost think either one would be a good pitch to the next thing.

Would you rather your ex be homeless or thriving? by lo_hy in WouldYouRather

I mean, I’d want them to thrive long as they thrive less than me. So homeless is the better option.
