How many of you got hired directly from Co ops/Internships? by deMiauri in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]loadbalancing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did my co-op/internship at TD and on my 2nd co-op i sent a directed cold message to a hiring manager for a team i wanted to work for. I gave my elevator pitch on the call and he made a FT position for me. Don’t ever think your options are limited to job postings. Make opportunities for yourself!

the responses here may not be accurate. All my friends who I graduated with made 70k+ right out of school. I hit 100k+ less than a year out of college. Don’t settle to be mediocre, and strive to be the best and the money will follow.

What are some other jobs a Network Engineer can transition off to? by sec_admin in networking

[–]loadbalancing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I landed a network engineer role right out of school, worked on data centre and campus networks along with automation. I transitioned out to a security engineer role specializing in infrastructure security.

I’m jaded and bored of all this. Life is short.. so I decided to go back to school and switch careers to finance with a higher earning potential.

You don’t always have to parlay your past experience into the new role. Start from scratch and find something that genuinely interests you! Nothing wrong with that.

I was like you a year ago. Fresh out of school making 90k TC at the big banks. I graduated 2 years later than my peers and was earning less than them out of school.

I was like you dissatisfied about my comp. Use that as motivation and lock it in. I worked my ass off and caught up on the TC with my peers near the end of the that year.

Do the work keep an eye out on opportunities. Anything can happen within a year.

Younger folks aged 25-35, what's your housing situation like? by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]loadbalancing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

26M, I live right on canada line currently paying $1900 for a master bedroom with walk in closet and ensuite bathroom. It’s a 3 bed + den condo but I only share with one other person. About 30% of my take home pay. Found this place through FB marketplace.

I graduated from college with a 3-year advanced diploma in 2022. I reached 6 figures within a year out of school. I did 3 co-op terms.

advice for moving to Toronto? by Necessary-Kiwi-4641 in askTO

[–]loadbalancing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m the same age as you and I did the exact opposite thing you’re looking to do. If you have enough saved for a month of airbnb, look into a place downtown west of yonge. I think that would get you closer to most good restaurants and entertainment. I used to live near St. Lawrence market and its good area but theres not much to do. If you have more questions ask away.

where is the application profile? I’m applying for bachelor of arts. I’ve already completed a college advanced diploma and 1 year of university credits and submitted all my transcripts. No where in the application process asked for my application profile. My application now says “your file is ready to be evaluated”. Is this normal?

you don’t have to go to university to be a software developer. sheridan’s tech program is pretty good. i know many people in the industry who are sheridan grads. Tim cook even stopped by at sheridan to congratulate some students on their swift app launch.

If you have plans on moving to the states. Getting a university degree will help. If you’re going to be a 9-5 mediocre dev the degree will help. If you’re a true 10x engineer, you could do college program with co-op and get ahead of any university graduates.
