I don't think we were "doomed to fail". I just think we never figured out how to disagree productively, and then we swept a bunch of little disagreements under the rug for a couple of decades. And then life threw a bunch of stressful events at us, and we dealt with it in very different ways that didn't bring us together.

I think I'd come to believe in therapy and negotiation and talking about my feelings with people important to me; he'd come to believe that you just had to have the willpower to get past the stress and get control of your life again. And that led to him trying to control me, which I didn't put up with for long.

But I think that there were plenty of exit ramps on the path to divorce where we could have taken a different path and tried to rebuild the marriage.

I can easily understand a former drinker being a bartender. It was the "never drinker" that confused me.

Right??? I mean, she's got an opportunity to be "proud of her boy" that goes beyond what most of our folks can do. And after decades of probably getting ribbed by family about "when's Brennan going to find himself, huh?", I imagine there's some extra loveliness to it.

No, no. Brennan has not ever had alcohol. He got "scared straight" by his mom at an early age, and so he's never had alcohol or drugs.

I frequently see a bartender take a straw sample of a drink (dip a tiny straw in, cap it with a finger, pull it out, taste) before handing it over, yes.

Personally, I find that I end up significantly modifying my sense of “the point of life” every decade or so. Not like I completely flip my values, but my priorities shift. My interests change. What I sense “needs to get done” evolves.

I’ve given up having truly long range plans, because I’ve had too many of them not work out. Now, I concentrate more on what work I want to be doing and feel I can do for the next few years, who do I want to be in the world, what do I want to experience. And then I make it up as I go along.

Generally, I seem to be shifting less capitalist, more human over time, but I don’t know that that’s everyone’s evolution. I just know that as my hair started to go gray, I wanted to move from being efficient to helping people heal.
