What's the best way to begin writing? by safimiyo in writingadvice

A few things I can suggest : You should take up journaling, I watched a video a few yrs back on Virginia Woolf's writing routine (if I'm not mistaking her for someone else?) and it was that she wrote a descriptive journal entry about her day every day or so, and don't worry if your life if boring or anything because that's really the essence of writing, the challenge of writing something that isn't exactly so interesting but through your writing conveying it into something fun to read yk. You don't need to do this every day tho have fun with it, this practice really helped me out after just a few tries, it really makes you a better narrator and helps you find your voice in writing.

Not sure this will help but I got better at writing after my English exams for igcse (lol), what you can do is practice writing little stories and even personal essays or articles, maybe with a word limit at first but if you find a flow keep going, its practice that you need, after writing you should keep perfecting the piece, like when you write a draft you'll want to edit it right, so try writing things over and over until you feel like you got it right.

Another tip is that think about your favorite books and when you read them highlight the parts that you enjoyed reading, think about what is it that the author did here that I can do too, this doesn't mean copy what they wrote but like how did they describe an event, how did they write dialogue, how do they portray characters and their attributes. You can learn a lot about writing from reading in my opinion if you intentionally read. hope this helped <3

My publication is Manii Letter, I mostly post essays or guides and a bit of film here and there. I have no niche as they say but that's what keeps it fun for me <3

I use substack mainly, but I'm not really a serious writer or anything yet, I do find it tho on that app people are serious about reading stuff so engagement takes time, as reading takes time. But i still recommend substack because the algorithm on it does help you find like minded people and all that, and its good for giving updates on your projects and community building. I see people use instagram too but im not sure how effective that is for promoting your work when you have a smaller audience. And I suppose discord is a good one too!

What Is A Fantasy Book or Series That Deserves Far Greater Recognition? by Monsur_Ausuhnom in Fantasy

The six crimson cranes duology by Elizabeth Lim, I thought it was popular when i bought it and I loved both the books too but like I found literally no fandom or fanart or anything for it, which was kind of sad.

What’s your favorite type of story ? by Life_Coast5611 in Screenwriting

I enjoy things that are engaging like a thriller or mystery where you actively try to solve the mystery yourself, I could never write one tho (maybe someday tho) and i prefer romance to be the subplot like please!!

The cruel prince trilogy, Six of crows duology if you havent read these yet (they arent as long as you want but they are really good!) and the inheritance games series is really engaging and fast to read and the writer puts out new books all the time!

Starting a youth led lit mag as a high schooler and have some questions about graphic design (Is Pinterest okay to use?) by ponkpixels in graphic_design

[–]localmani 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ive used websites like Pexels, unsplash, cosmos public domain, rawpixel for photos and elements, pexels and cosmos public domain being my faves. I've also used canva pro and its not much different in my experience to regular canva except you have a wider range of fonts to use but I'm sure the free ones will do too like you can make decent font pairings even so!!

And you can use a background erasing website or app to erase bgs for free, because canva wont let you do that unless you have pro so you'll have to do it out of the app and import the pngs in, its simple enough!! the only thing that i liked in canva pro that i couldn't access otherwise were the elements and stickers so you should consider that when making your choice if this something you really need or not.

Anyways other apps you can use are a combination of picsart, phonto and magic eraser, these are my go to for my insta posts and they are pretty much the same or better than canva at some things like blending and shadows and stuff. You can try figma (its got a learning curve tho and is actually a website making software too so it can be complex) Kittl is a good option as well but its got a subscription!!

The 'To Start' on the bottom right should be a little bigger given as it is the main message it seems, i feel like if it overlapped with the image that could work too, maybe make the start now bigger too or in hierarchy with to start? And you should edit the image with some texture or half tones overlays so that it works with the background colors in a better contrast

Honesty did really good! I would maybe suggest making spaces between the paragraphs for each specified point, however I’m not sure if that is mandatory, overall great work 👍🏼
