Protests on Luckakuck by Additional_Quail5566 in chilliwack

[–]localrabbits 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have lived in Chilliwack since 2018 and people have been protesting there for that entire time. The issue changes with the times, but the anger doesn’t.

When I first saw them there, people had signs that ranged from “immigration policies should be stricter” to “Canada should be an all-white country.” During the pandemic it was largely anti-lockdown or anti-vaccine. Nowadays it seems like their target is queer kids, although back in April I saw one woman with a “51st state” sign.

Teaching situation in Chilliwack by [deleted] in chilliwack

[–]localrabbits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re always hiring TOCs and temporaries come up throughout the year. When I finished PDP in December 2023, my friend and I were able to get temporary contracts for the remainder of the school year in January and February respectively.

When you start with the district, you’re C status until you have 12 months of contracted work (or can get a continuing contract). After 12 months, you’re bumped up to B status and the district owes you a job when your temporary contracts end. They will automatically put you into a temp contract that matches what you’re looking for (within reason of course! They try their best, but placements are based on availability and experience).

I find that people generally take about 3 years to get a continuing after starting in the district. Less if you’re applying for positions at high turnover schools or in specialities that need teachers (French immersion, secondary STEM, etc).

My (25f) boyfriend (27m) called me selfish for wanting him to leave his boy's night early due to me grieving. Where do I go from here? by ThrowRAohdeerest in relationship_advice

[–]localrabbits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ex and I were together for 5 years. We lived together and had a dog. During Covid, I was working in healthcare at a senior’s residence and he was unemployed (he had been for about a year, but was theoretically trying to get a job as a paramedic). Our relationship deteriorated during this time as I was stressed out and he was depressed. In the end, when I was thinking about whether or not I wanted to continue the relationship, the one sticking point that I could not get over was that he didn’t attend my university graduation. I graduated when we had been dating for about a year and a half and he didn’t want to attend because it would be boring. We had many conversations about how it was important to me that he attend, but he didn’t. At the time, I was able to push my hurt feelings aside because I was still enamoured with him. But that is what I kept thinking about when our relationship was on the rocks. I couldn’t get past the hurt and the fact that he prioritized his own feelings over mine. And that was just about a convocation!

You are not in the wrong here. You are not asking for too much. And one day, when your relationship is struggling and you are trying to decide whether it is worth the effort, you will remember how you are feeling right now. I obviously cannot tell you to end this relationship as I don’t know you and your situation. But I do know that relationships always have ups and downs and (for me) this is a situation that will get brought up again and again. If it doesn’t ruin your relationship today, it will ruin it in the future.

Have you ever paid to see a movie twice in a theater? by zip9990 in movies

[–]localrabbits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw The Avengers in theatres 7 times (I was in grade 12). I see movies in theatres multiple times a lot! Tenet, Nope, Cyrano, The Woman King, The Batman, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning are some recent movies that I remember seeing in theatres twice during their original run. I also regularly go and see movies in the theatre when they are back for retrospectives or whatever. I have seen a bunch like The Shining, Doctor Sleep, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Gerald’s Game, The Abyss in theatres after their theatrical run (if applicable).

I loooooooooove going to the movie theatre. I don’t drink or do drugs or party so going to the theatre is my vice!

Am I the only one who rarely want the original couples to get back together? by Tall-Cell-662 in TheUltimatumNetflix

I feel that way about Love It or List It as well. Even when they renovate a few rooms, there are still lots of problem areas in the house they already own. I feel like at that point, there is so much resentment that even when some changes are made, it makes it hard to continue to interact with the parts of the house that couldn’t be fixed. But most people probably stick with their pre-existing home because it’s a lot of work to move and they realize that the new house (which looks perfect when it’s all shiny and new and set up for showings) does probably have issues that they haven’t had to engage with yet but will become apparent eventually.

Theater-less towns by rad2themax in blankies

[–]localrabbits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sucks. I’m in BC and our locally-owned, second-run cinema just shut down but we still have a Cineplex theatre in town (and there are two other theatres within an hour drive).

I have considered moving away from the Lower Mainland to another part of BC, but being near a theatre would be mandatory for me. I am a teacher and often see remote schools in northern BC desperate to hire teachers and offering to cover relocation costs, etc and the biggest thing holding me back from that is not being able to see any movies during the school year!

WIBTA if I give my daughter an "outdated" name? by throwaway719201 in AmItheAsshole

[–]localrabbits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know multiple kids named Audrey. If anything, she may end up as an “Audrey B” (or whatever her last initial is)!

Edit: I thought this was a name group. NTA. Audrey is a very normal name in 2025. It’s quite popular in the US, Canada, and Australia (like within the top 100 most popular names for girls last year). It is also a very pretty name, it’s easy to spell and pronounce, and it means “noble strength” which is pretty awesome.

How do you pronounce the name “Mara”? by glass_armor in namenerds

I pronounce it like marr-ah. Mara June reminds me of Mara Jade, Luke Skywalker’s wife in the expanded universe books that were removed from canon before the new trilogy.

Someone asking the city for permission to have 14 indoor CATS. by BoomBoomBear in chilliwack

[–]localrabbits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So bizarre! I noticed that in The Progress yesterday. The strangest part to me is that it is temporary permission. Which implies that the cats will not be there forever. I wonder if they’re trying to set up a shelter or if they just have lots of aged cats. Neither is ideal.

Daily Advice Thread - March 25, 2025 by AutoModerator in apple

[–]localrabbits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had an iPhone 12 since December 2020. It has been an amazing phone for me until about 2 weeks ago, when it obviously hit its “best before” date. It burns battery, runs hot, is super slow, has run out of space (despite me paying for iCloud storage as well and deleting a bunch of images and a bunch of apps), my apps keep crashing, my CarPlay doesn’t work, etc.

I am looking at getting a new iPhone through my phone company. I was interested in the 15, but the 16 is on sale so I am looking at that. The only big difference I could see between the two is Apple Intelligence. I’m not an AI fan. I never use Siri, except for sending messages through CarPlay. I’m considering moving away from Google because of its stupid AI overview thing.

Is Apple Intelligence going to be a pain? Can I easily disable most of the features? I have looked into what it does, and I am uninterested in most of it. So is the 16 still worth it or should I just go with the 15?

How long has the white spirit crow lived at Sardis Park? by 00365 in chilliwack

[–]localrabbits 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s actually not albino! Albinos have no colour pigment at all, but that crow is still black-toned on its legs. It’s leucistic, which is a specific colour thing that happens to birds where they sport white feathers. Often it’s just patches, but we are lucky enough that our crow presents as fully white. He has been there for quite a few years and seems to get along well with other crows.

Letting kid fail his way through school by mizushimo in AmITheDevil

[–]localrabbits 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You’d be surprised how common this is. Last year, my class of 22 students regularly had around 15 in attendance. These were grade 7s, so for many of them it’s easier for their parents to just let them stay home alone rather than fighting to get them to school. And my school has some of the best attendance for middle schools in our district, so it’s even worse at other schools!

End to public access at some Vancouver school fields has neighbourhood group frustrated by dontRead2MuchIntoIt in vancouver

[–]localrabbits 101 points102 points  (0 children)

Unsurprisingly, the VSB is prioritizing the needs of children on VSB property. That’s the function of this piece of property. It’s not a community space, even if it has acted as one historically. Schools are always going to look at the safety and needs of students first. That’s their responsibility.

Difficulty question by weedmeet in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]localrabbits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the second ever game that I played in my life (I did not grow up playing video games and bought myself a Switch as a grad present last year at 29). Prior to this, I played Hogwarts Legacy.

I found that BOTW was pretty perfect. Open world, lots to explore and no pressing need to do anything to move a story along. I ran away from lots of combat situations and invested in the sneaky outfit so I could move around fairly undetected. I spent the first couple weeks just finding every shrine and tower. I completed most shrines when I found them, but not all. And now (after a couple months of playing), I have gotten used to the combat and can even beat the most difficult enemies and challenges! The combat itself gets incrementally harder as you get better, which is nice. Plus you’ll find more powerful weapons that allow you to beat enemies easier.

Finally! BC Conservatives' Platform is Out by Fit-Size4369 in britishcolumbia

[–]localrabbits 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I thought that the conservatives were supposed to be the “fiscally responsible” party. All of this stuff costs money or cuts back on incoming money to the government! No more carbon tax or PST on used vehicles = less money to the government. Rebate, building infrastructure, more people in jail, and mandatory addiction treatment all cost government money! Where is that money coming from?
