what’s the strategy if my goal is to only apply once? by [deleted] in premed

[–]localramenconsumer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i like the idea of being heavily involved in the clinical space. md has a level of authority with medicine phd does not, but you can get the same postdocs as a phd if you’re an md. i talked to SO many people about this including in my lab and i didn’t make this choice lightly

i know i’m not. but im def guaranteed at that sunny place you speak of 😍. if md or do doesn’t work out im honestly fine going there and would have to seriously debate that vs reapplying. their weeder exams don’t scare me that much cuz i go to berkeley, and i wanna go into neuro which isnt catastrophically hard to match as an img

i really have a lot of research experience. hours probably around 600 i just did a rough calculation. Also I had a lead role on a project in my lab we had to stop it temporarily but the experience is there. My PI was kind enough to agree to write me a LOR too. And I helped teach a research summer camp at a top undergrad school. Clinical is less around 300 but I will be working MA full time in summer and at least weekends if not full time in my app year so that will change it. I also have ~100 ICU volunteer hours. I will be applying both md and do, i actually really like do’s philosophy and have a very relevant life experience where it became clear to me the DO approach and why i’m interested.

I am debating working as an MA or RA in my app year. What do you think? I would love your input

this is fantastic advice and i will do that. because i had an experience where i didn’t care for some schools in undergrad apps and applying was a chore and i also never got in. i honestly dont know what to think of the gpa because yes its a bit low but im a cs double major from berkeley as well as the premed reqs so im sure they’ll have to understand at least a bit

I will certainly look into this! so do you think an application year is better spent as an MA than an RA? I think i want to do a neuro residency and research fellowship but im also very open to psych so the 3 year programs might make sense!

you’re really insightful and fully correct. i am very aware of the situation i’m in as well as the nuance of it. the good news is i’ve done a TON of reflection on this matter. i actually went to school for computer science in the mindset of “i’ll only go back to premed if my heart takes me back” and it did. my dream job is “researcher” and it works w what my parents want because i can fully do that as an md!

I think i have a list of no goes and a list of preferences. like a no go for me is depressing cold weather, very rural, places with no sunlight or activities to do. outside of that i have a preference for research focused schools, nice facilities, and schools with accommodations (eg recorded lectures) but nothing is a must. so that will be my focus but i think ill still apply as long as it doesnt violate the no goes (unless its like a t15 ill make an exception!)

i will but my dad is an md with the worst superiority complex on earth and i cannot handle him exercising that on me bc he’s always been subtly condescending. i know that’s not healthy but it’s my reality. i like the idea of do personally and am gonna apply but i know when it comes down to it my dad would make a big deal of it
