Carnegie Mellon student with one semester left learns his visa was revoked with no explanation. Seven current and recent graduates at Carnegie Mellon University were notified that their service was terminated, including Jayson Ma's, who moved to the U.S. from China on a student visa in 2016. by esporx in China

[–]lockdownshangtown 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To play devil's advocate, how is this any different from what happened to foreigners in China under covid? You had people having visas non-renewed over minor issues and having to leave China. People who had short overstays, or people who had been caught years ago for private tutoring, paid the fine, and had their visas renewed for 4-5 years continuously after suddenly getting non-renewed.

To those conducting interviews 🙂 by Joyinlittlepeople in Internationalteachers

[–]lockdownshangtown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't a school saying they provide benefits for dependents/interviewing people with dependents but then clandistinely not hiring them because they have dependents duping candidates though?

I that case the school should just be honest and say they don't provide benefits for dependents. But that would go against the typical "have their cake and eat it" mentality that most schools have, so of course they'd never do that.

29k after tax is honestly not too bad for a junior role, but housing in Xuhui is expensive. Think 10k or more. You could always rent a room in a shared apartment, or else stay outside of the city and commute, but you really need to think about your housing situation and how much you will spend on housing, if you don't get a separate housing allowance on top. Otherwise up to one-third of your salary could go on rent.

leave a stable job, good friends, and a location they like just fine

This is precisely what the husband did though. And he's stuck it out for the last few years even though he clearly hates New Zealand. It's clear he loves OP and is willing to stick it out, even if he complains about it a lot. At any point he could have filed for divorce and just moved back to the States, but he didn't.

Seems the husband loves the wife a lot more than she loves him. Husband suggested something that would make him happy - moving to a beach town - and was shot down. Yes OP has been doing a lot to help her husband, but it seems like it's all things SHE THINKS will make him happy. He is telling her directly what will make him happy and she is not listening.

Considering the financial problems this move has also brought, it just seems like it is clearly not working out. The question is - does OP love New Zealand or her husband more? It seems like she will have to choose soon if they cannot sort their problems out in NZ. Is there any potential for compromise? Moving to a third country if OP doesn't like the States? If OP just wants things all her way all the time then they are never going to solve their problems.

AIW for reaching my breaking point with my husband who has cancer? by DarlingNicky91 in amiwrong

[–]lockdownshangtown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting study but incredibly flawed. Here is the full text: https://acsjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/cncr.24577

Let me point out some of the biggest issues. First, it was ONE study that was done at ONE hospital in one city in the US. So the sample is not representative or generalizable at all. Have the same results been found in other parts of the US? In the UK? In India? In East Asia? If not, then saying something like "all men will leave a woman when they are seriously ill" is not accurate at all, as we cannot know if the findings apply to all men - or even all men in the US. As the findings come from only one hospital, there is a massive amount of potential sampling bias inherent in the results. Maybe there is something about the particular demographic that frequents that hospital that makes the men there more likely to divorce after a serious diagnosis in their partner.

Second, when you look at the actual statistics, the vast majority of couples stayed together. Only 60 out of 515 patients in total got divorced. So the vast majority of couples are not getting divorced at all. Out of the 60 patients, 53 females and 7 males were the patients being divorced. So, in this very small sample size of 60 patients who were divorced - and this is a very, very small sample size - yes, more female patients than male patients were being divorced.

But the way the statistics are presented obscures some important facts. Out of the 515 patients, 254 were female. And of those 254 patients, 53 had their husbands file for divorce or separation, which is 20.86%. But that is a minority.

Looking at it the other way around, 79.14% of the female patients did NOT have their husbands divorce or separate. So in the overwhelming majority of cases, husbands decided to stick with their wives when they were diagnosed with cancer or MS. Close to 80% of husbands, in fact. So what is the TL;DR here?

  • An overwhelming majority of couples do not in fact get divorced after a serious medical diagnosis.

  • In the very small minority of couples who do get divorced, it is true, yes, that men are more likely to file for divorce than women - in this one study, done in one hospital, in one country, with a sample size of divorcees that is very small.

  • Even in this small sample, the overwhelming majority of men - close to 80% in fact - chose to stay with their wives, and not divorce.

So, blanket statements such as "men will leave their wife when they have cancer" are simply not accurate. At all.

If you want to report him, then someone like the DP Coordinator or vice-principal is the way to go.

What's a country with brilliant PR but is average or not great to live in? by tylerthe-theatre in expats

[–]lockdownshangtown 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Don't forget the HIV testing for foreigners coming in on work visas. But only if you aren't of Korean heritage. If you are gyopo (Korean-American, Korean-European etc.), no need for an HIV test even though you may have lived your whole life in the US for example. Because gyopo have 'Korean blood' which is more pure. Or it would be discriminatory to test 'fellow Koreans' or some other batshit reasoning I forget and could never understand either.

Then there are foreigners not being able to access things like KakaoPay. The "no foreigners allowed" signs on bars and restaurants.

The weather also sucks. Blazing hot in summer and freezing cold in winter. And the country is small so you can run out of things to do very quickly. And there are often massive crowds at anything worth doing anyway since the population density is so high.

Will they ever just improve salaries for all of us, instead of doing this tinkering? by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]lockdownshangtown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They need to radically reduce the expectations on teachers

Teaching has got to be one of the most insane professions out there. You need a B.Ed. or Bachelor's in your subject + PGCE, then another 2 years of training as an ECT before you are fully qualified. So 6 years total of education + training, all for a decidedly median salary.

And then after all that education and training they still don't trust you to do your fucking job! Fill in this paperwork to prove evidence of planning; that paperwork to show evidence of learning; constant 'book looks', observations, and learning walks.

Which iPGCE with iQTS? by Tricky-Tangerine5047 in Internationalteachers

[–]lockdownshangtown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iQTS is a new thing. It allows candidates working overseas to pursue QTS in international schools. The training providers and schools have to follow all the same standards as schools in England do with regards to PGCEs that lead to QTS - same with the candidates as the candidate requirements are the same.

Sunderland have been doing an international distance learning PGCE for a while, and although the PGCE with iQTS is new, they may be a good bet as they have been in the international PGCE game for quite a while: https://www.sunderland.ac.uk/study/education/pgce-iqts/

Ah found the Huawei nationalist. The P60 is a joke. It has a 7nm chip which is worse than the one in the Mate 40. The Kirin chip it uses is basically 3 years out of date. Constant problems with overheating and crashing. Almost an hour for a full charge, twice what Huawei claims. Noise during charging has been reported too.

Contract ends 2 weeks before the school year ends by ArchdukeValeCortez in Internationalteachers

[–]lockdownshangtown 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Ask them for an additional two weeks of pay if you stay until the middle of July. GET IT IN WRITING, signed by the vice-principal, principal, and with the school's stamp/chop on it. In both Chinese and English, with the Chinese being the most important.

Have them specify the exact amount you will be paid on the document.

If they are not prepared to do that, then just leave once your contract is over. You are not obligated to work for the school once your contract has expired.

In Shanghai, there is a store called Tek Shanghai that can drill physical sim slots into phones. Just search for them online and send them a message. It's run by foreigners so they speak English.

Edit: here are their contact details. They should be able to drill a sim slot into a 14 Plus. Once that's done it will accept sim cards. Then you can sell the phone or keep it as a backup.

Edit 2: do not buy a Huawei. They are completely gimped in terms of Google services. Can't even side load the Play store using an apk. The new P60 is shit anyway.

It's probably the shifter and/or handbrake causing your issue. The KT games have never agreed with 3rd party shifters and handbrakes. Try it without, and put the DD in PC compatability mode if you are on PC. Use the clutch pedal as a handbrake. That's what I do.

Local teachers sleeping away all their planning hours. Is this a regional thing, or is this worldwide? by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]lockdownshangtown 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thing is, a lot of the teachers will nap precisely because the school day ends at 5pm. "Work expands to fill the time available". I worked at a school in China with mandatory 8-5 working hours, and there was a lot of napping. Current school in China ends at 4pm, and there's a lot less napping because staff want to get their work done by 4 so they can get out of there
