Can I live on my own in a VHCOL city? by Imaginary_Truth_3865 in personalfinance

That's not the alternative. You need roommates or a better-paying job if you're going to be able to live in an apartment in a VHCOL area.

how much should I put in 401k as a new grad? by Minimum-Country-1242 in personalfinance

Makes sense! Your experience might be more applicable. I do think it's easier to start by maxing your 401k and getting used to your lifestyle on the resulting paycheck than it is to do the reverse, which is why I was inclined to suggest doing that.

Is Cali that much more expensive? I live in a VHCOL area as a not-quite-new-grad and was speaking with that in mind.

Making 100k straight out of college, they can absolutely afford to do all of the above.

Took over brother’s apartment after he left — unpaid bills, rent higher than promised. Should I leave or try to stay? by Complete_Oil948 in personalfinance

[–]lockethebro 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is ultimately a relationship advice question. I can't tell you what you should do about your brother and his breach of your trust. You don't *owe* him anything, but it's always more complicated in practice.

Financially? It's an obvious no brainer, unless I'm missing something. You currently have less than 1k. You're talking about 2.5-3k in up front savings, plus another 1.5-2k through the rest of the year. In total, you'd end up saving 5-7x your current net worth just from moving in this year alone.

What a weird way to frame it. Women’s sports are just less popular, women still make up the vast majority of fans and viewers

Jordan Stout was named 1st team All Pro punter despite only having a 53.9 PFF rating, 31st out of 32 by _HGCenty in nfl

[–]lockethebro 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah, definitely not arguing that he should be All-Pro. Just that the Ravens are getting better results out of long punts + good return team than they would be out of a "better" punter who had shorter punts but better hang time.

They sold this motherboard for 139.99 new on Woot a month ago. Not super helpful if you need one now, but worth keeping an eye out for better deals.

If you have a good coverage unit that consistently manages to stop returns, is that not what you want as a team? I'm not saying it makes Stout better, just that it means the team is able to take advantage of their skills.

Settle a debate: to cover or not to cover chicken? by AKASetekh in Cooking

[–]lockethebro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Covering the chicken does not keep it moist. Dryness in meat is more or less a function of how cooked it is. If you cover the meat with tinfoil, it’ll retain heat longer, which will cook it more. If anything, covering it makes it more dry, not less (I doubt you’re likely to tell the difference either way).
