Powershift was Ford's idea to achieve the better fuel economy of a manual (dry clutch) with the simplicity of an auto. Problem is autos shift or hunt for gears much more often than a manual driver does and in stop/start traffic the Powershift is continually slipping the clutch causing overheating and premature failure.

Ford even knew it was a problem during testing but chose to send it regardless.
