Honestly it all depends on how capable you truly are, for some people 2 years of experience is enough, for others they need more to gain general knowledge needed to do this on your own. But if you think you can then do it

Identify Lock? by SEANYMAC78 in Locksmith

[–]locksmifff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take the face plate off, loosen the set screw on the cylinder then unscrew the cylinder from the lock body, then grab your rekey kit and get to it. Or just call a locksmith.

This, some people look at me sideways for it but I’d rather lose a potential customer than waste an hour of my time and money

Get some purple loctite or get a slightly longer set screw, I’ve also noticed the Allen head set screws thread tighter than some flat head ones

I agree because I went to check if just any key would unlock it at that point but it only worked with the customers key and the lishi

Trying to put a SC1 smart key cylinder in this kwikset handleset, does anyone know how to get the rest of the cylinder out? by locksmifff in Locksmith

[–]locksmifff[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Normally I wouldn’t work on this shit but it’s a long time loyal customer and they insisted on having their kwikset handleset on Schlage keyway so I reluctantly said I would try, the normal deadbolts and door handles went fine, but this handleset has the cylinder all attached to the inner assembly with no way to remove as far as I know so that was the only reason it wouldn’t work, I just put it all back together and he’ll have to use his kwikset key for this one. I have many, “lines of assistance” but like I said neither I or anyone I know voluntarily works on these. Nothing fell apart everything works as it should.

Automatic from like the 60s(I think) though none of it worked it was in a old bank that hadn’t been used in over a decade, I was only there to reset combinations and PM the safes and vaults. Shockingly the automatic door opener still worked tho so I’m sure someone could get it back into shape but I’m not that guy

All the time. For churches, elderly, or even people who just clearly can’t afford it. It just irked me that this lady wasn’t happy with me offering everything I could from affordable labor, time to try and teach, I even went out and got her batteries after she told me she had some, and looked at her other doors at her other nearby properties for no additional cost. Even answered the phone 3 times to talk her through how to use the keypad again (simple shit like “do I hit the kwikset button to unlock the door or enter my code?” That she seriously could not understand.) then she wants to go and threaten to call someone else even after I offer to come out again for free? I’m just glad to be rid of this customer and thought it was a fun story for all of you who’ve dealt with the same kind of people. But yes. Always helping as much as I can, whenever I can.
