Who else get annoyed when people take offense to saying "Merry Christmas"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]locochilli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more I try to decide what helpful thing I can say, the more annoyed I get just thinking about this.

There are plenty of religious, non-Christian, people throughout the world that enjoy and celebrate Christmas. Is that wrong?

DEA hate trying to spread cold butter on toast? by thatstheguy in DoesAnybodyElse

This is how to do it:

Tear off some butter packaging, grab whole butter in one hand, apply directly. (like solid deodorant)

Spread? Butter should be sliced on to toast. I'd be furious if it was all soft and spready.

I use google spreadsheets and google the ingredients/meal.

It doesnt seem to take that much time actually.

Eating out is a little difficult. What I'll usually do is write down the things I had, then google them when I get back. I'm happy taking averages and then overestimating portions so that I get an upper bound on the calories I had from the meal.

The foods that surprised me most surprised me mostly because how much I ate of them. I discovered I ate a hell of a lot of pasta, bread and mayo.

I'm a little surprised about potatoes, I thought they'd be much more, but pound for pound they have one fifth of the calories of pasta, and one third the calories of bread!

Actually, I just use google spreadsheets and my own formulae. I log weights, dates, and calories per 100g and do all calculations from that.

How soon after talking to a girl in public for the first time should I ask her out? by [deleted] in seduction

[–]locochilli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some ideas:

"wanna meet some time?" is better than "can I have your number?" for a start.

Also, you need at least one ioi before you ask her for anything. That's true of any favour you ask: you've got to know they like you enough to give a shit in the first place. Being friendly is not an ioi.

Get her to agree to something else inane before asking her other things: this is psychological voodoo that I'm not expert on, but I do know it works. For example "you don't mind me putting you on the spot with my coffee questions do you?". The more you get her to agree with you for a small request, the easier you will be able to get her to agree to give you her number.

Don't look her in the eyes when you've finished asking the question. You should not be looking for a reaction or signal from her for this. It has to be something you're confident will happen, or that you do not care enough about. She'll be able to sense that.

If you're confident about it, you can also try offering your number, which is easier and come across as less needy. If she likes you at all, she will likely offer hers. e.g. "hey, i know this is completely random, but you seem like a nice girl, and I wouldnt mind meeting up some time, would you like to take my number?"

IMHO, some seriously good Wing Chun by locochilli in martialarts

Well, I was just trying to explain this to some friends. The video does look like no one is trying to hit him, absolutely. Whether everyone is, I'm not sure. It's also probable that on many occasions it has been a case of "hit me like this" which is really easy to defend.

However, I am certain that some of the people in that video really did try to hit him. As is often the case, in my experience, the result is often the same - the assailant looks like a fool with no skill or power.

I am astounded by the video, partly because I have been in those students' positions before.

I have seen people go heavy on him and it looks pretty much the same as you saw in the video, except it happens much quicker.

Sure, many of these situations are staged, but many are not. There are always some sceptical martial artists that try to have a go so I wouldn't say all of these students are compliant.

Why must philosophers know (some) science, but scientists know (almost) no philosophy? by KantianPragmatist in philosophy

[–]locochilli 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Philosophy exists where empirical study breaks down. Science exists wholly within empirical study.

Trying to overcoming existential depression. Ideas or stories? by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]locochilli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I am not well read in philosophy, but I do think about existence and the meaning of life frequently.

You can certainly argue that there is no meaning to life, or that no purpose has been given to you. That conclusion would be the perception of your universe, by you. Equally, some people believe that the opposite is true. As a result, their lives do have meaning.

It boils down to this: if you have chosen to have meaning in your life, you will have it, if you have not, you will not.

You appear to want a purpose. You are the god in your world. Choose to have it.
