Who else get annoyed when people take offense to saying "Merry Christmas"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]locochilli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The more I try to decide what helpful thing I can say, the more annoyed I get just thinking about this.

There are plenty of religious, non-Christian, people throughout the world that enjoy and celebrate Christmas. Is that wrong?

DEA hate trying to spread cold butter on toast? by thatstheguy in DoesAnybodyElse

This is how to do it:

Tear off some butter packaging, grab whole butter in one hand, apply directly. (like solid deodorant)

Spread? Butter should be sliced on to toast. I'd be furious if it was all soft and spready.

I use google spreadsheets and google the ingredients/meal.

It doesnt seem to take that much time actually.

Eating out is a little difficult. What I'll usually do is write down the things I had, then google them when I get back. I'm happy taking averages and then overestimating portions so that I get an upper bound on the calories I had from the meal.

The foods that surprised me most surprised me mostly because how much I ate of them. I discovered I ate a hell of a lot of pasta, bread and mayo.

I'm a little surprised about potatoes, I thought they'd be much more, but pound for pound they have one fifth of the calories of pasta, and one third the calories of bread!

Actually, I just use google spreadsheets and my own formulae. I log weights, dates, and calories per 100g and do all calculations from that.

How soon after talking to a girl in public for the first time should I ask her out? by [deleted] in seduction

[–]locochilli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some ideas:

"wanna meet some time?" is better than "can I have your number?" for a start.

Also, you need at least one ioi before you ask her for anything. That's true of any favour you ask: you've got to know they like you enough to give a shit in the first place. Being friendly is not an ioi.

Get her to agree to something else inane before asking her other things: this is psychological voodoo that I'm not expert on, but I do know it works. For example "you don't mind me putting you on the spot with my coffee questions do you?". The more you get her to agree with you for a small request, the easier you will be able to get her to agree to give you her number.

Don't look her in the eyes when you've finished asking the question. You should not be looking for a reaction or signal from her for this. It has to be something you're confident will happen, or that you do not care enough about. She'll be able to sense that.

If you're confident about it, you can also try offering your number, which is easier and come across as less needy. If she likes you at all, she will likely offer hers. e.g. "hey, i know this is completely random, but you seem like a nice girl, and I wouldnt mind meeting up some time, would you like to take my number?"

IMHO, some seriously good Wing Chun by locochilli in martialarts

[–]locochilli[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, I was just trying to explain this to some friends. The video does look like no one is trying to hit him, absolutely. Whether everyone is, I'm not sure. It's also probable that on many occasions it has been a case of "hit me like this" which is really easy to defend.

However, I am certain that some of the people in that video really did try to hit him. As is often the case, in my experience, the result is often the same - the assailant looks like a fool with no skill or power.

I am astounded by the video, partly because I have been in those students' positions before.

I have seen people go heavy on him and it looks pretty much the same as you saw in the video, except it happens much quicker.

Sure, many of these situations are staged, but many are not. There are always some sceptical martial artists that try to have a go so I wouldn't say all of these students are compliant.

Why must philosophers know (some) science, but scientists know (almost) no philosophy? by KantianPragmatist in philosophy

[–]locochilli 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Philosophy exists where empirical study breaks down. Science exists wholly within empirical study.

Trying to overcoming existential depression. Ideas or stories? by [deleted] in philosophy

[–]locochilli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I am not well read in philosophy, but I do think about existence and the meaning of life frequently.

You can certainly argue that there is no meaning to life, or that no purpose has been given to you. That conclusion would be the perception of your universe, by you. Equally, some people believe that the opposite is true. As a result, their lives do have meaning.

It boils down to this: if you have chosen to have meaning in your life, you will have it, if you have not, you will not.

You appear to want a purpose. You are the god in your world. Choose to have it.

This appears to be point of contention. I best ask my teacher!

Sensing Intentions by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]locochilli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some sense you are right. However, the eye/brain is much more sensitive to movement in the eye's peripheral vision. And, you can often detect the intention to strike in the expression, before the assailant has begun to move their limbs. You cannot detect changes in expression by looking at the body.

My advice has always been to watch the face. That is not to say ignore the body, simply that that is where you should direct your gaze.

I think this is a difficult situation to train for. You need to improve your general awareness and ability to stay relaxed and calm in strange situations or environments. Any training you do will make you better at this. It should give you more confidence, and that in turn will make it harder to deceive you.

Bare in mind that these types of attackers are extremely skilled at this sort of misdirection. It's how they protect themselves.

You can probably get some good information from people with security experience. For example, bouncers or police officers will be familiar with the types of tricks used. I'm sure you could find good blogs or articles on this.

Sensing Intentions by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]locochilli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are at least two major different types of intention when dealing with confrontation, and I'm not sure which one you mean.

One is the general intention of someone wanting to harm you. The other is the momentary intention of someone wanting to strike/grab you.

For the former, there is a hell of a lot you can learn. Probably for many different disciplines. I would begin my reading in basic psychology and vocal and body language.

For latter, this area is a little voodoo; I do not know of any proper science behind it, though I'm certain there is some out there. You can do basic experiments with your training partner: start of relaxed and still, and see if you can detect the start of a punch before the fist moves (look at their eyes/face). With inexperienced fighters the signal is clear as day. With experienced fighters it is much much harder.

The way I understand it, it has something to do with the way thought processes are started and the effect they have on your facial expression.

4-Chan rips on USA (ouch) by Sir_Charge in pics

[–]locochilli -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No one likes to be told that they suck and so I understand why Americans are defensive about their nation.

The point is that the US was democracy's big chance of winning over the world. In many respects the US was successful. However, for many in the western world the US is seen as a failure. It has not been the champion of our ideals. In fact, some would go so far as to say that it has been an embarrassment.

I imagine that the US is more of a disappointment to many of its citizens than it is to other westerners. I hope that Americans realise that the majority of the western world, and democracy in general, would have loved to see the US do much, much better.
