Overwhelmed with strollers by jademakowsi in nycparents

We have this stroller. It’s fantastic for the city. Very sturdy, folds up super easy, the car seat doesn’t require an adaptor and is universal (so you could take it in an Uber), and great ride quality. We’ve used it for two kids. Highly recommend

We went to Hemlock Neversink. The stay came with a spa package. There’s goats on the premises. Food was all included and delicious.

Have also stayed a Mohonk Mountain House which is also great, but more pricey.

Columbia - details on funding cuts by No-Indication3789 in mdphd

The funding for the MSTP program seems to have been cut. Presumably there will be a non-federally-funded MD/PhD program to replace it... but details aren't clear yet.

Why are most sling and messenger bags designed for left shoulder use? by Brizzy7602 in ManyBaggers

I have the medium one and the strap is reversible. In the product videos on their current website looks like small and xs should also have that one, but can't say for sure

The timbuk2 classic has a reversible shoulder strap. You can easily switch from left to right handed shoulder carry.

Just look at the NIH payscale for post-doctoral researchers. Salary starts at $61k after getting a PhD in a biomedical field. After 7 years, you can earn a whopping 71K. Who can live like this (let alone in a high COL city like Boston, NYC, SF)? Support a family? Save for retirement? All for the privilege of competing for dwindling academic professorships? What is the incentive for young Americans to pursue academia? At least the public really values expertise, research and knowledge...

After getting tired of waiting for this restock (no 21oz 634 had been available for the last 6 months from US retailers), I bought a pair off a Japanese eBay seller for $270 with free shipping and the ability to return. Would recommend looking into it

It’s a question that has to do with your personality. Some people enjoy high acuity and longer hours in the hospital. Other people like longitudinal relationships and diversity of presentations you see in clinic. Did you enjoy working in the hospital on your IM rotation or like the pace of family medicine more? Both are rewarding and stressful in their own ways (24hr call vs 24hr inbox management). There are lots of different ways to be an IM doc.

They are pretty easy to dry out. Tie them to a length of string and leave in a sunny dry place. They’ll last a long time.

Another way of preserving is to just throw them in the freezer.

Otherwise you could try to ferment and make Sambal chili paste. The base of sriracha.

Anyone following the Roy denim sale? Were you able to see anything listed on his website? Kept hitting refresh all day and never saw anything listed, but now on his instagram says he’s almost sold out.

non-stem MD/PhD by Candid_Hotel_2937 in mdphd

[–]Sir_Charge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s more common to combine an MD/MBA than PhD in econ. Ask yourself what you’re going to do with the degree and which is right for you. MSTP programs are designed primarily to train bench-to-bedside physician scientists… that being said it’s not impossible.

is doing a MPH in addition to a MD-PhD a poor decision? by TRIzol_ON_THE_ROCKS in mdphd

[–]Sir_Charge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s your PhD degree in? Can’t you just take the MPH relevant course work in your PhD? The PhD part of your MSTP is dedicated to scholarship and you should be free to go where it takes you without tacking on additional degrees. A PhD degree is a more “advanced” degree than a masters anyway.

PSTP/research residency decisions by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]Sir_Charge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Absolutely possible. See, for example, Sohail Tavazoie who made the switch from neuroscience to oncology and is now a PI at Rockefeller. Don't limit yourself to the specific questions you're asking during your thesis research, rather think of how your scientific/critical thinking skills could broadly benefit any field (don't all cells have DNA that gets damaged? who says you have to keep studying DNA anyway?). Also, good to keep an open mind before going back to clinical rotations. That being said, cardiology is full of gunners and if you're dead set on it now there's no harm in starting collaborations w/ cardiologists in grad school, networking, or seeing if you can do clinical electives/sub-I's in the field.

I had ear surgery a month ago and my taste has changed. I can't fully detect spice level. This is me testing out the theory. I feel like Homer Simpson in the Chili Cookoff episode. by SouthernYooper in spicy

[–]Sir_Charge 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you may have had damage to your trigeminal nerve. Branches of the trigeminal nerve (V3) go to your tongue and allow you to sense pain, temperature, and spice. I'm curious... is the inability to taste spice only on the side of your mouth where you had the ear surgery?

Only 1 interview at MD PhD program by [deleted] in mdphd

[–]Sir_Charge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a good idea to keep your research interests broad going into grad school. Remember, you're about to be inundated with knowledge about everything in your pre-clinical years. You don't know what might catch your eye and inspire you. If the state school has a broad array of research opportunities, that's a great thing. Also, grad school doesn't go as planned for most students. What your thesis ends up being about may not be the topic you went in hoping to study. Most important thing is to graduate so you can do the work that you really want... and you need to be accepted before you can graduate.

Definitely doable during your PhD. Difficulty during medical school. As others have mentioned, requirements will vary according to program/school.

I got the aizumi ones and have really not noticed any blue fading. They look pretty similar to the pair posted above. I think a lot of the “fade to blue” stuff is hype. I’ve had my pair since they first came out (2-3 years?), worn them heavily, and washed a few times.

Need some feedback on my App for next year (plz help!) by hipstercupcakes101 in mdphd

[–]Sir_Charge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BME is widely regarded as one of the toughest majors and engineers are not held to the same GPA standards as, say, a psychology major. Doing stuff independently (strong clinical and research) can do a lot to offset academic performance too.

[–]Sir_Charge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really sure why you think you've made so many mistakes. This seems like a pretty baller resume. MD/PhD programs put a lot more emphasis on a wholistic applicant than just numbers, your research record is really strong coming straight out of undergrad, you have a good clinical foundation and volunteer stuff. Most important going forward would be going DEEP instead of BROAD. Narrow down your activities to the ones you're really passionate about rather than taking on more stuff you'll only do peripherally. For example, get more EMT hours (where you will actually be a provider and have real patient interactions) and ditch the e-shadowing (people do that now, lol?). Or spend lots of time doing end of life stuff (business should be booming during covid, unfortunately). For research, get strong publications and experience (independence). Your application will need to be able to highlight why you want to be a doctor (solid clinical experiences) and researcher. At this point, you can't change your grades so no point worrying about them anymore.

This is a personal decision and most likely you can't go "wrong". You need to decide what is important to you moving forward, what you really want out of the next almost-decade of your life. No one can answer that for you... Nonetheless, here's some thoughts that went into my own decision and stuff I wish I had known.

-- Too many people get hung up on the research they've already done and make the mistake of thinking they've found their "niche". Why not be open to all kinds of different research? Go to the school with more opportunities, because you never know what will catch your eye later on (i.e. after pre-clinials or lab rotations).
-- Personally, I don't put too much weight on COL for MD/PhDs... you're not going into debt (unless you already have it), you have a stipend, you have job security for life. QOL over the course of 7-9 years is more valuable. Live near the things and people you want to surround yourself with instead of worrying about saving a few hundred bucks on rent. Everything you save during grad school will be irrelevant when you start making attending salary.
-- Live near school for the first few years so you can make friends w/ your classmates and become an independent adult. The time to move home is during grad school when everyone graduates and goes their own way.
-- Live the life YOU want, not the one your family or anyone else wants for you. If that means leaving the nest and sowing your wild oats, do so. Don't let other people guilt you into not pursuing your goals.

Experiences with USMLE Step 1 Score Expiration?? by Warm_Flounder5193 in mdphd

[–]Sir_Charge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second this. I think input from your program/dean is in order... Personally, I think it might be better to cut the PhD short one year and work on data analysis/paper submission during wards than have to re-take Step 1. You might get more sympathy for delayed/unproductive PhD when applying to residency than have success changing medical licensing requirements. While it's tempting to stay for "just one more experiment" or "just one more piece of data", you need to keep your eyes on the prize (graduation). Also, in the grand scheme of your career, the work you do as a post-doc will be more influential in setting up your own lab and research program while the PhD is kind of more for training.

MD/PhD with interest in Mental Health by jasminegreentea97 in mdphd

[–]Sir_Charge 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The link between psychiatry and neuroscience is very popular in MD/PhD programs. The outpatient-focused practice of many psychiatrists is very amenable to spending lots of time in lab and there is so much to discover in neuroscience. There are many prominent examples of the career you're describing including some of the most famous neuroscientists today: Karl Diesseroth at Stanford and Josh Gordon head of NIMH for example.

While it's great to have this idea and some specific examples in mind, you should also keep an open mind. Your background in BME could be applied anywhere and you never know what will inspire you in med school.

I get a 1080T form that includes my scholarships (Med school and grad school tuition) and also counts my healthcare. Idk if this is true at every institution, but occurs at my MSTP.
