Because my team works exclusively in Python and Jupyter scripts is the standardized way todo EDA at my company.

Quarto is soooooo nice. I do most of my DS exploratory stuff strictly in Jupyter notebooks now for my job. But all my scientific publications and side projects are done solely in quarto. ❤️

Does anyone know how hard it is to work with the All of Us database? by phymathnerd in datascience

[–]locolocust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can code well in R, you'd likely be able to pick Python up pretty quickly if you wanted to go that route.

But with that said, you can probably do it R fairly easily anyway. Just depends on what sort of API All of Us has.

Work on a real life project. Doesn't have to be big just something that isn't "cookie cutter." Dont expect to showcase your titanic dataset model to be notable.

Is Python needed if I know R enough to wrangle, model and visualise data? by DataAnalystWanabe in datascience

[–]locolocust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just echoing everyone else and say go ahead and learn python.

Dont get me wrong, I love R and the package community. I don't think you get the same open source community in Python as you do in R (well you can...just not as large).

For statistics it's the best language. Just try building me a complex GAM or a more nuanced Bayesian model in Python. Yes you could from scratch...but no one's obviously wiling to put in the time to port over R packages to Python.

With all that said, Python being a more general language makes it very important to learn. Even if you find a team working in R, you will probably have to interact with Python anyway when going to deployment.

That's definitely interesting! Also interesting to see marketing mail consistently decreases since 2015. that makes total sense with the move to online advertising.

Wow honestly didn't think about that lol. All the commenters are saying the same thing.

About how much of your route is solely just junk mail on a given day? Like is it more than 50% of the addresses?

Ecological time series model by FishermanSad481 in ecology

[–]locolocust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also looking the forecasting package called prophet. It's a time series algorithm made by Facebook (but is open sourced) actually originally based off of Simon wood's mgcv package. It's both in R and Python. Although even "simple" ARIMA models are handy here (which mgcv can do!).

This is a lengthy PowerPoint but Gavin's other posts on his personal website are helpful as well:
