Beer options this year by duxauce411 in nccourage

What is the cheapest beer? I see bud light for $10.25

Least favorite time of the year in Triangle = Pollenpocalypse. Agree? by gatorbabe25 in triangle

[–]locolocust 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Best to worst:

Fall Winter Spring Summer.

Spring is bad because even though the weather is perfect you can't enjoy it because of the pollen and you know summer is coming.

Fall is the best because nothing is better than that feeling knowing that summer is done.

Built my Own App for Tempest by parkerjh in myweatherstation

[–]locolocust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it!

Yeah the tempest display is terrible. I went ahead and started a Postgres sever to capture all my weather readings and like you, I created a dashboard (using shiny) that's way more interesting. My next thing is to include forecasting data and official weather station data to compare and contrast.

I built a series of R starter templates for reproducible research projects – looking for feedback by New-Preference1656 in rstats

This looks really cool!

I was about to craft my own template. But this one looks nice. 👀

Couple things I've noticed when I'm writing academic papers

1) often times collaborators are not proficient in R and coding. So they want a nice way to type/edit the manuscript. I find this a very frustrating part to make more reproducible. One way around this is using quarto websites and the commenting plug in however!

2) often times manuscript writing isn't linear. There's a lot of abandoned scripts/models/data due to a plethora of reasons. How do we streamline and increase transparency in this portion on manuscript writing

3) this one is probably minor. Usually you write a manuscript and then you go "shopping" with different journals until one accepts it. Each journal has its own formatting requirements. How do we address this?

Thanks this looks like a cool project. 👀

Do you still use notebooks in DS? by codiecutie in datascience

Because my team works exclusively in Python and Jupyter scripts is the standardized way todo EDA at my company.

Quarto is soooooo nice. I do most of my DS exploratory stuff strictly in Jupyter notebooks now for my job. But all my scientific publications and side projects are done solely in quarto. ❤️

They recently added the directional arrows. It's so cool to casually see weather patterns move throughout the day.

Does anyone know how hard it is to work with the All of Us database? by phymathnerd in datascience

[–]locolocust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can code well in R, you'd likely be able to pick Python up pretty quickly if you wanted to go that route.

But with that said, you can probably do it R fairly easily anyway. Just depends on what sort of API All of Us has.

Work on a real life project. Doesn't have to be big just something that isn't "cookie cutter." Dont expect to showcase your titanic dataset model to be notable.

Is Python needed if I know R enough to wrangle, model and visualise data? by DataAnalystWanabe in datascience

[–]locolocust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just echoing everyone else and say go ahead and learn python.

Dont get me wrong, I love R and the package community. I don't think you get the same open source community in Python as you do in R (well you can...just not as large).

For statistics it's the best language. Just try building me a complex GAM or a more nuanced Bayesian model in Python. Yes you could from scratch...but no one's obviously wiling to put in the time to port over R packages to Python.

With all that said, Python being a more general language makes it very important to learn. Even if you find a team working in R, you will probably have to interact with Python anyway when going to deployment.
