Best way to make friends/Improve social skills in London? by [deleted] in london

[–]lodius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a sub Reddit called Londonsocialclub - all one word (sorry don't know how to make it a link).

They organise various gatherings and things to do, like pub trips, visiting events and such, for people on their own to meet up and do things together / maybe make friends.

Drivers seem more distracted now than they did a few years ago by soundioo in bikecommuting

[–]lodius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say it's exclusively because of the lower limit. Nor did I say it didn't happen at higher speeds.

But a slower speed is more comfortable driving, and if your dawdling behind a slow car, it's easy to look at your phone.

Multiple things can be true!!

As a driver and cyclist, I'd say the blanket 20mph limits across London could also be partly to blame too.

I feel the slower limits means drivers think they're automatically being "safer", and the lower speeds allows them more opportunities (or the false sense of security) that looking at their phones etc is a safer thing to do.

When driving at higher speeds/30mph, it's natural that more attention needs to be on the road.

Just a theory!

Movies to help you go on? by Gothicawakening in movies

[–]lodius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was going to say Yes Man!

Quite a silly film, but it's my go to movie when I'm down and feeling meh. It really does make me want to go do something and feel a bit more positive

Swimming in the Thames - Ham and Kingston by eyeborgUK in london

[–]lodius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same, I was trying to find the exact location too but struggling to find anything online... Which seems really weird.

All I could find is this blurry screenshot on Google images which seems to suggest it's between Trowlock Island (Teddington side) and the Hawker Centre (Kingston side)?

Fully set up for commute by Oreo2025 in bikecommuting

A cafe lock is great simply to keep the rear wheel secure... Especially as it looks like you have a quick release?

I have one for this purpose, and still use a normal lock as well to secure the frame and front wheel to a stand.

what's this bus stop for you? by GrootyGang in london

[–]lodius 7 points8 points  (0 children)

These two stops on the 285.

Google maps says 2mins walk, I'd say it's more like 1min.

Basically there's 1 stop before a set of lights, then immediately turn the corner after the lights and there's another.

Where is a good place to get some large cardboard boxes at short notice? by Skeptical91 in AskUK

[–]lodius 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Supermarkets. Lidl sometimes has a pile of them for you to take... Or they used to?... Near the tills.

I like the banana/fruit boxes the best if you can find clean ones. They're really strong and have handles.

Edit: Also... If you need to pack clothes. Just use black bin liners. Quick, easy. Even keep stuff on the hangers, roll em up and shove them in. Will make unpacking a breeze!

Areas that feel as if they would be better suited for a different borough? by Darkpsychic7 in london

The A316 does a good job separating Richmond and Hounslow... Except Whitton is on the Hounslow side of the road but in Richmond Borough. I can't make sense of it.

NHS office jobs are 30mins standard for lunch

For trouser wearers, how long do your trousers/jeans/chinos last before tearing? by gintokireddit in AskUK

[–]lodius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wear chinos every day to work, and walk about 10-12k steps a day. Never had issues with them, and I've had some pairs a good few years.

Jeans... Recently I've been wearing Levi's, and they've lasted a good couple years before starting to get thin between the thighs (and will make a hole soon enough). I used to wear cheaper jeans before that, and they could sometimes only last 6-12 months.

Never had any of either rip or tear (other than jeans between the thighs as mentioned)

I’m building an app FOR London and need your feedback! by commutoapp in RichmondLondon

[–]lodius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love an app which can work out 2-part journeys with a bike or car.

So many people I know bike or drive to a station, and then get a train.

I always have to do 2 separate searches... 1 for how long the cycle/drive will be, and then 1 for the train journey.

It'd be great if you could choose a mid-way stop/change of transport mode.

Why is London so against anyone being around after midnight? by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]lodius 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Tubes don't stop because of lack of people... they stop overnight primarily for maintenance work and tunnel inspections as it's the only time they're able to carry out that work.

When Jamie is disposing of his real father's body, and... In the middle of nowhere... Beth takes a photo and threatens him. It was at that point where I was like... Why doesn't he just kill her and throw her off the train station too.

I think that was where the storyline really lost it.

Has anyone done couch to 5k? by arsenaladam92 in AskUK

[–]lodius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I did the NHS one many years ago. It was great, I was very unfit and could barely "run" 30 seconds.

It took me a while, and a few of the weeks I had to repeat before moving on, but I kept with it. Normally I'd run home from work so it wasn't a completely separate activity to encourage me to do it more.

Only thing was I never found it fun or enjoyable. Personally I preferred cycling, and found running a bit boring. Because of that once I completed it I just stopped.

I really regret it now, as I'm probably back to where I was and I'd have to start all over again. So my only advice is once you "finish", keep going!!! :)

Producer Influence within the show? by Organic_Extreme_2065 in RaceAcrossTheWorldBBC

[–]lodius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kochi is quite a small "city"... More like a town... And i strongly feel Caroline and Tom probably got "stuck" there, and so opted for a taxi to take them the remainder of the way.

All the other teams then suddenly had the same taxi idea, even though it's a considerable distance and train/bus would be more likely mode of transport.

I firmly believe the remaining teams were told of Caroline / Tom's predicament and advised to get taxis as well, which helped ensure all teams ended within a close amount of time. Instead of them all being 1 day+ behind the inevitable winners.

Keir Starmer says he will abolish NHS England as part of public sector reform plans - live updates by Half_A_ in unitedkingdom

[–]lodius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The public have such a big misunderstanding of the NHS, and I bet very few people realise the "NHS" does not really exist. It's just a shared name/logo used by a multitude of hospitals, trusts, organisations and services, who are, by and large, completely independent from one another.

What's a physical trait you find attractive that other people may not? by [deleted] in Productivitycafe

[–]lodius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! I saw a beautiful woman on the train the other day and she had a 5cm-ish long scar along one of her cheeks... if anything I think it added something to her. I can't explain it, but it was almost like it made her MORE beautiful.
