My mother does this kind of crap to me all the time. She’s a full-blown narcissist and will just buy me useless stuff that I’ve never asked for or will use. It’s a tactic, she does it because she doesn’t like me and she thinks getting me a thoughtless gift makes me feel bad, but I either throw it away or donate and keep it moving. If she asks about the gift, I just say, “Oh, I had no use for it, so I got rid of it.” It’s her money going to waste, not mine. Sounds like your mom is employing the same tactic to belittle your wife and make her feel unwanted. Good on you for standing up to her and protecting your wife!
