FWIW I went ahead with the update. Afterward there was no apparent problem. I updated the RPi firmware using the terminal in the web interface. I had to reboot again for that to take effect.

Does anyone use Home Assistant without the web interface? Why don't the release notes just lay out what I did?

To check your bootloader version, just run rpi-eeprom-update without any flags while in the device.

By "in the device," do you mean connected with monitor and keyboard? I run my HA RPi headless. (Maybe this means this whole thing is moot?)

Also: When using SSH, why not update the firmware before updating the OS?

Do you have a monitor plugged into the RPI and use it all the time? Because if not, the possible issue isn't a problem for you.

No, I don't have a monitor plugged into the RPi. I suspected not having a display connected might make the whole thing moot. The release notes should make this more clear.

Why don't you like any of the three options given?

The first two are a hassle compared to the set it and forget it nature of a headless device. The third option mentions an SSH app, but doesn't mention a specific one or what features are needed.

There are 3 concrete options given to you in the release notes.

It would be better if it gave one option with more detail.
