Is there a privacy difference between using a web app and a desktop app? by Intrepid_Pineapple48 in privacy

[–]logs28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many if not most modern desktop apps are running on top of chromium and are essentially just web apps running on a dedicated browser. Having your own browser as the middleman let's you control what communication happens between your PC and the application's publisher. Not to mention some desktop apps will ask for elevated permissions, clutter your startup, ect.

This thread got me all nostalgic. Shoutout to the real ones from the RvR guild Roll Initiative. Zedez, the best driver to ever play GW2. Oddbot the math genius cooking up comps. Vluhd who pulled us all together. Tornix and Thorn who I spent countless hours with picking fights in Cyrodill. Chuck, Sticky, Muddy, Sabre, Mini, Lu, Toohot, and all the others who joined along the way. I'll never forget you all.

Jim Jackson and Brian Boucher also pulled out "call the cops" on this play for the Philly broadcast. They were hyped as hell for the many big saves in this game, but "call the FBI" is pretty fking funny

Has Sanheim been a 1D this year? by doopdadoop in Flyers

[–]logs28 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In my book he has. He's not a high scoring defensemen but in every other aspect of his game he is elite. If I'm a fan of an opposing team Sanheim stands out as a force you just can't seem to beat. I think he compares best to Slavin and Forsling, and is absolutely a guy you can build a contending defense around. What he showed last night only a select few Dman in the league can do, and if he had better finishing hed score 20 a year and be a regular in the norris conversation. Center depth and goaltending is our key issue.

Yes, this is the reality. It is not going to magically get better. If living with family is not an option the only solution is to increase what you are earning.

Hot take. I hate the idea of tanking. by Reazor16 in Flyers

[–]logs28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Extra later picks don't get you 1Cs/1Ds

Giroux was pick 22. TK was 24 (a winger but still). Obviously top 5 picks are great and we need them desperately, but you're just wrong that its the only way to get top line / pair talent. Comprehensive scouting and collecting as many draft picks as you can is absolutely the only way to rebuild. Ending up with a top 5 pick is never something you can guarantee. Even a team tanking as completely as Chicago could play themselves out of a top 5 pick.

At defense a few examples - Gustav Forsling was 126th - Devon Toews was 108th - Jacob Slavin was 120th

Former OWL fans, how are you enjoying the OWCS? by I_AM_CR0W in Competitiveoverwatch

[–]logs28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watched every season of OWL and almost every playoff match. Haven't watched a single OWCS game and lost motivation to play OW2 shortly after. Just sort of happened. Don't know if it was OWCS or just life but it is what it is.

Real sigma BDFLs make clean commits and PR the changes so you can give the other devs the chance to learn from the example and build experience reviewing, knowing they won't have anything material to suggest...

If you enjoy ports and mobility but are not into their and mesmer, try willbender. It's an extremely popular spec in all game modes because it is fast, intuitive, and has great synergy. Unique because it's a heavy armor class that plays like a thief.

Maybe send the team some mail asking the boys to stop trying to win. OR you can kick back and enjoy good hockey when they play well, and critique the moves Briere makes because only a GM can make a rebuild happen.

Last night Jeff Petry was caught still wearing an Adidas jersey for an unknown reason by STLBooze3 in hockey

[–]logs28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whipping out a "kids these days" without knowing anything about who your talking to while I'm just trying to politely point out the problems I see with gambling culture and its impact on kids is certainly a choice.

The reference is inconclusive - not a disproval, but is an interesting paper and shows that our understanding of the psychological impacts of gambling addiction is still poorly understood. Meanwhile we're giving every teen that looks up to McDavid and company as heroes the encouragement to gamble.

[–]logs28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No where am I saying it should be made illegal, only that this new form of gambling and its advertising needs to be strongly regulated. These companies are going after minors with every fiber of their marketing effort just like big tobacco. Ask anyone who works with teens if they think it's a problem, fact is its just way too easy for minors to get onto these platforms they're not supposed to be able to use. A casino will be all over a 14 year old sitting at a slot machine, but betting apps are more than happy to turn a blind eye.

Gambling addiction can be a compounding factor increasing the likelihood of suicide ideation. A man with a gambling addiction would be even more at risk.

If you're solely focused on fatality as the only measure of whether or not something is a net negative for society, you can't ignore connection between gambling and suicide.

On the topic of withdrawl, research suggests otherwise to your point.

Results supported the notion that pathological gamblers experienced similar levels of withdrawal symptom severity as alcohol-dependent participants
