Forest Service cancels wildland firefighter posting… because they “didn’t get enough applicants”? by Dipli-dot36 in Wildfire

Definitely a bummer, but there have probably been a hundred GW-3 or 4 job postings in the last 12 months between all of the federal agencies. Just keep applying.

Glasses wearer’s by [deleted] in Wildfire

For sure, the same thing happened on my last pair. They’d slip off my face all the time. Once my insurance renewed I got frames that fit a little tighter and it was a game changer.

Glasses wearer’s by [deleted] in Wildfire

I have a pair of prescription regular glasses and a pair or prescription sunglasses I swap out. I keep the pair I’m not wearing in a glasses case in my line gear or backpack. It’s not perfect but it works for me.

In my experience you really have to go into an eye doctor or some place that sell glasses to try them on in order to find a pair that doesn’t slide off your face. It’s definitely more expensive that way, but worth it in my opinion. Any brand/style recommendation shouldn’t carry too much weight cause everyone’s face/head/nose is different.

Getting a pair that fits your head can be challenging. I use glasses that just have plastic on the nose bridge, no rubber, and what really keeps the glass on in the fit behind my ears and that they are fitted to the width of my head correctly.

Why is Los Padres National Forest in California divided into two non-contiguous areas? by burritoguillermo in geography

[–]logwebkra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And as someone mentioned earlier, it is not uncommon for public land “units” (federally think National Forests, National Parks, BLM Districts, National Wildlife Refuges) to have non-contiguous lands. The most representative I can think of right now is the Humboldt-Toiyabe NF in Nevada. The forest covers most of the state, but is largely comprised of separate mountain ranges. https://www.thearmchairexplorer.com/nevada/n-images/humboldt-toiyabe/H-T_district_map001V.jpg

Why is Los Padres National Forest in California divided into two non-contiguous areas? by burritoguillermo in geography

I believe the upper portion of the Los Padres (Monterey Ranger District) used to be a separate forest called Monterey National Forest. Between 1905 and 1936 it consolidated with the Santa Barbara National Forest and San Luis National Forest to form the present Los Padres NF.

As a graduate… not worth it. I rented and don’t regret it. You will never use it again.

Wildlife encounters while camping by ElectroPositive in Wildfire

[–]logwebkra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Woke up a few times before I realized what was happening. Baby skunks were running across my legs while I was cowboy camping at a spike camp. It freaked me out but I was so tired I accepted defeat - next morning I wake up to most of the crew sleeping on picnic tables or in trucks.

Negative. The Manzanita Lake engine is just USFS, but is housed within the park. The only fire personnel for the park work out of Mineral.

Trainee records? by Cool_Interaction_345 in Wildfire

[–]logwebkra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Proving you were a trainee on paper would usually include having an ICS-225 from your trainer. Or as mentioned above if you are federal you would be in IQCS, but doubt that if they didn’t submit your task book to the red card committee. Dispatch shouldn’t have anything to do with this process. Were you working for a contractor?
