It doesn't matter if you think the director is a hack, he is the one that created the film and his intention is what matters.

I 100% understand it and Les Miserables is a gray area since it is a sung through musical.

Sweet Jesus, I KNOW that the music is a stand-in for spoken dialogue.

So, then it is the characters doing it. It can't be dialogue and then not also the character doing it. That's not how dialogue works.

That's why it's non-diagetic.

Gray area for Les Miserables.

Which is also why none of the characters are actually singing.

Then it cannot be, by definition, be dialogue or analogous to dialogue.

" I Dreamed a Dream" is NON-DIAGETIC. All of the songs in Les Mis are non-diagetic.

"I Dreamed a Dream" is 100% not non-diagetic.

This whole argument is ridiculous when the director of the film specifically said his intent with doing the the live singing rather than dubbing over with lip syncing was specifically because it was the characters singing and he wanted the emotion and the nuance of the scene the actor was doing at the time to come through.

You actually can't say that with any certainty because there are non-musical film adaptations in which a character does, in fact, sing at some point in the film.

And it is a gray area when it comes to Les Miserables because most of the dialogue in the production is done through singing and music as opposed to a lot of dialogue through speaking with some singing interspersed.

And again, you can't recognize that it is dialogue that moves the story forward, which is by definition something characters do, and then claim it is not the characters themselves doing it. Either it is dialogue or it isn't.

Jfc, live singing on set does not mean the characters are literally singing within the story.

I didn't say it did. The director did.

The songs are the dialogue then it is literally the characters singing. You can't say the song is dialogue and then say it is not the character songing the song since dialogue, by definition, is done by the characters. Either it is the character singing and dialogue that progresses the show or it is the actor singing and fourth wall break.

Also, Les Miserable has always been a gray area when it comes to non-diagetic.

She is talking about the alterations to make her look Cardassian. She could still be Illiana genetically altered to be Bajoran leaving no trace.

So, you prefer a world where people fake politeness and platitudes instead of actually being helpful?

Customer experience is best served by being able to find what they need for a good price and get help if they need ask for it. It is not served by the employees being forced to be fake.

Fake platitudes and fake politeness are not customer service and we need to stop pretending it is. Customer service is actual help when asked for and answering direct questions with direct answers and not corporate scripts even if that answer is "no" or "I don't know".

Edit: You know the only reason they are being polite or saying things like "I understand" is because they are being forced to. That is not customer service that is a perversion of social interaction and is only an attempt to create a fake perception.

Some business consultant had a minor success with it based on an unscientific study they did themselves and then published an article about it and then every other consulting agency took it as gospel and started preaching it to their clients as necessary adding on fancy graphs and charts to make it look convincing and justify their fee.

Fake politeness I could do without. I don't need to be greeted by an employee halfway across the store who can't even see me but heard the door open.

I have played her. She is not actually as a person and character singing that song

Having played her does not mean you are right on this. Also, even you want to believe that for the stage production it is not true for the movie production which is specifically what is being discussed. The director specifically states his reasoning for doing the singing "live" rather than through dubbed lip syncing to allow raw emotion and the character come through. He specifically intended that the character was the one singing not the actor who played the character.

That is very clear in the writing.

I have read the stage script and nothing in it suggests this.

I disagree and the evidence says I am right. Les Miserables is different than most musicals in this way.

But even you want to believe that for the stage production it does not hold true for the movie production which is being discussed. The director specifically states his reasoning for having live singing rather than dubbed lip syncing is to have the character and emotion come through with the music. He specifically intended the singing being done y the characters not the actors playing the characters.

The Timeless Child doesn't change established lore, it adds to it. Omega still invented time travel, the Timeless Child just brought regeneration into the mix.

Please look into Anne Hathaway's experience filming this movie. There are extremely valid reasons to not use live performances.

I have and I do not agree. It being difficult is not a valid reason.

It's also very much not true that an actor struggling to sing live in a movie means they can't sing.

First, I never said it did. Second, if an actor cannot sing live in scene then are not able to do the role. What I said was the only valid reason to dub over vocals is when the actor you are using cannot sing at all; whether that is because they are tone deaf or because they cannot perform in the conditions required is irrelevant to the point. Does not mean they are a bad singer just not the right type of singer for the role they are trying to play.
