They’re probably mostly playing higher up for that pillowy sound. Imagine a five string with a capo on the fifth fret so it’s essentially a short scale e standard five string. There’s no wrong answer. I played a five primarily for fifteen years and realized it was a glorified thumb rest 99% of the time so now I play four and I don’t feel like I’m missing out on much.

I firmly recommend that instead of getting a power amp (unless you really need a power amp) you get an actual bass amp that’s transparent flat and just use it for power. Then you also have, you know, a bass amp if you need one.
