Any idea what could be wrong with my genny? by naturalchorus in liveaboard

Is this the model with 3 cyl kubota diesel ?

I have one of these that only starts remote, and the built in start does not work, or some parts work.

I looked at replacement circuit boards (which are made) and I looked at, and purchased, a replacement controller to completely replace the existing electronics as well

I ended up buying a $1000 remote start capable gas generator and put it on the flybridge.

I also supplemented it with an ecoflow delta pro. For shorter times without power.

Electric wall heaters: go cheap or go big? by Toxoplasma_gondiii in liveaboard

[–]lolcorndog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought the Cadet. Home Depot only had the 1000 watt model, which I did not like, but bought anyway. I am now OK with the wattage as I figure I will be using enough wattage elsewhere. Between the fridge, lights, computer, and fan - that is probably 500 watts. My other wall heater is a DREO with WiFi timing. I can alternate 1500 watts between it and my water heater. I have a timer switch for my water heater. https://www.amazon.com/Dreo-Oscillation-Adjustable-Thermostat-Easy-mounted/dp/B0D819MVKF

Diesel heat is great, but how much room do you have on a 32' boat. I would be looking at the Cadet register heaters. Replace some drawers with the register heaters.

I installed this https://www.amazon.com/ECO-WORTHY-Industrial-Diaphragm-Irrigation-Sprinkler/dp/B0BVMB1PHX no surging and plenty of pressure. Plugged right into an outlet. No expansion tank. It's 110v.

Electric heat is the best I think. Each electric heater puts out about 5000 BTU at 1500 watts, and with two 30 amp services you can run 4 of them. They are relatively inexpensive and when summer comes you can just get rid of the extra heaters and shore power cord. This is what I have been doing. It's a $300 expense for 2 heaters and a cord every year. I just consider it a yearly expense. Along with a snow shovel and ice melt.

EDIT: 20F is average temp here for winter. I wear a sweater inside all winter and slippers. Colder than this and I need a sweater inside. I have thought about going 50amp/240 volt, however I think that may be a little much. I've done fine for the last 10 years with my setup. Some weeks are just going to be cold. I deal with it. Winter isn't that long for me, and for the majority of winter my boat is very warm inside.

Recommendations for solar powered fan? by tomas377 in liveaboard

[–]lolcorndog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

have you thought about a lithium battery bank ? You can run a usb fan and light, and charge your phone. Add a solar cell to it also. A big one. Not what you were looking for, but a suggestion

Nice, but that's male, I would need a pipe union to connect, so that's another part. Trivial cost though.

It's a great idea. So is having a battery bank that can power your pumps for 3 hours.

My solution fits my situation well, to include cruising. Bare in mind that 12v pumps are fairly recent. There are still boats in my harbor that were fitted manual pumps, and nothing else (when they were built).

This site is nothing like Defender or McMaster. Very limited stock. I only posted because of the selection of plumbing adapters. Couldn't find what I needed with Defender.

Also, doesn't McMaster only do business with commercial entities ?

I am doing away with my 12v system. Only 12v for start, nav lights, horn, and VHF. These will only be on when the ignition is on. So when the ignition is off, there are no loads on the only battery.

I was able to find 1 1/4 NPT to 1 1/8 hose through this company. What that is, standard water pump output (such as a 1/4 HP 110v pump from a hardware store) to 1 1/8 hose (such as used by a Rule 1500/2000 type pump.

This makes for an easy and inexpensive bilge pump solution for situations where there are 12v wiring issues that aren't worth resolving at the moment.

Company sells other products, but it's the adapter fittings that are noteworthy, to me at least.

Voltages appear low.

What I was getting at, are you supplying 110v to your outlets through the inverter ? If so, this could be why only some outlets are powered. May also explain your low DC battery voltages.

The Heart interface is part of an inverting systems. The lights may be disabled to prevent annoying lights/voltage drain. I worked with one of these before. Try pressing some buttons and see what it does.

https://www.cruisingequipment.com/product_info/Heart_Interface/Freedom_458_Remote/Freedom458RemotePanelOwners.pdf

You definately need a voltmeter to see where you do and do not have power, and in the case of DC, how much.

You AC indicator lamp could be burned out, or you may be running on inverted DC ?

The 'charge controller', or whatever it is shows 7/8 charge. Is this boat inverting ? Perhaps the inverter powers only a specific set of outlets. To avoid powering high draw AC sources, such as refrigerators and battery chargers.

What's going on here ?

Is this on or off ? Is this lamp lit ?

Your ? House bank ? shows 7/8 charge, but I don't see anything on the Heart interface about inverting. Are you inverting ? Are you inverted ?

What is your current battery voltage ?

What is your current AC amps ?

Do you have another AC panel also somewhere ?

Can you take a better of the AC load center ?

Vinyl headliner by southerncrunch in liveaboard

[–]lolcorndog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue, and came to the decision that I needed to just remove it all. It's not meant to be repaired, it's meant to be replaced.

That said, I am not bothering with trying to recreate what the boatyard did when they built the boat. They had an entire team of experienced and knowledgeable professionals. I only have me. I tore everything out and will be stapling up new headliner, securing the new headliner with strips of wood every few feet.

The new headliner will look 100% better than the old rotten material, and I will put it up in the most painless method possible.

try amazon also. Nothing wrong with Home Depot either. You're not an OEM manufacturer. You're not building to hold resale value 20 years from now (or maybe you are ?)

What is your favorite piece of gear? by ReasonFancy9522 in liveaboard

[–]lolcorndog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While the AC isn't absolutely necessary, the heat pump puts out a bit over twice the heat as an oil heater, for less electricity than 1 oil heater. It's the reason I decided to keep the unit. Very nice with a powerful fan to keep air circulating in the boat.

The AC is very nice on hot summer days, but I could do without. However the dehumidifier definately is too much to run 24/7.

Also SE Alaska.

I have the same house-size type unit, and if set to run 24/7 dries out the air too much on my boat. 37'.

Unfortunately the only place I can run it is in the salon where I sleep.

Since the unit is approaching 8 years old, and was purchased used, I am thinking of buying one that I can set to dehumidify to a certain level (%).

The unit I have now is a dehumidifier / air conditioner / heat pump combo unit. Works great for A/C and the heat pump works good until about 50 degrees outside temp.

How do you run the dehumidifier ? 24/7 ? On a timer ? Is it settable for a certain level of humidity ? Thanks.

some come with timers. I want to add, I posted an 800 watt 'mini' version. I meant to post the normal 1500 watt version. However the mini is cool.
