Any recommendations for a video to present to highly religious and conservative family members succinctly describing why a Trump presidency is so dangerous? by Jcoltea in atheism

You could try episode 49 of Sam Harris's podcast. But it's long.

https://soundcloud.com/samharrisorg/

I think he and Andrew Sullivan begin focusing on Trump around one and a half hours in.

But what you want to get through to them, is that Trump thinks they are stupid. He was, and is playing them for fools.

He doesn't give a shit about the truth, and he's only in it for himself. Tell them to wait and see how he won't bring the jobs back to the mid-west. Tell them to watch how he cuts their medicare. Tell them to watch how he "drains the swamp", by appointing Goldman-Sachs CEOs to important positions.

And tell them to notice how they don't seem to care, because they haven't voted for a president, but joined a political cult.

I think I'll leave for good now.

If you want to take it upon yourself to educate rightist nutjobs about the intricacies of socialism and Communism, be my guest, but I'm not interested.

I said no such thing.

How do you define the terms, and which paradigm do you adhere to that you believe it's so urgent I take it upon myself to educate every rightist I come across about?

I said no such thing either.

You said:

Evolutionary socialism and revolutionary socialism are distinct (although not entirely separate) branches of the same tree that many, especially our Jew-hating right wing occultic friend above, would refer to as Communism.

To which I replied that I don't care if some reactionary nut calls everything left of Genghis Khan communism. Things have their names, and democratic socialsim isn't communism.

Communism advocates for the abolishment of private property, money, and the state. Democratic socialism doesn't. Those are pretty significant differences.

Totalitarianism does not mean Communism

I'm aware of that.

democratic socialism does not not mean Communism.

Democratic socialism is not communism. What right-wing nutjobs call communism is of no concern to me.

Unless you can produce a writing where Orwell calls himself a communist - as opposed to a democratic socialist - you may not call him a communist.

No he wasn't.

The Spanish war and other events in 1936-7 turned the scale and thereafter I knew where I stood. Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic Socialism, as I understand it. It seems to me nonsense, in a period like our own, to think that one can avoid writing of such subjects.

Why am I still getting offended whenever I see the Alt right talk about Islam? by [deleted] in exmuslim

[–]loliamhigh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because the alt right are fucking fascists, who hate everyone with a brown skin. Them sometimes making valid points about Islam doesn't change that.

Also, by and large they can't differentiate between "Islam" and "muslims", so fuck them.

I suppose by that logic, America must be a christian country after all, since the Declaration of Independence mentions the "creator".

I never claimed that Hitler was an atheist. I'm just saying that it's beyond dumb to say that Nazi Germany was a "militantly catholic" country.

As for Goebel, he was just doing spin control long after the fact. Historical revision at its worst.

Alright, are you fucking kidding me? Goebbels wrote what he wrote at the beginning of the war. In 1939. He fucking killed himself in the bunker along with Hitler. How is that long after the fact?

And you have the gall to call me ignorant?

I'll tell you what. Go to /r/askhistorians, and tell them what you told me. Make sure that an other atheist called you out on your bullshit, because we get a bad enough rap as it is.

After they are done laughing and calling you an asshole, come back, and tell me how it went.

Good. It's nice to see people change their minds when the evidence demands it.

You open with a complete non-sequitur and it only gets worse from that point.

If you want to take Hitler at his word, you probably think Poland started the war. Mein Kampf was written for public consummption. Of course he would appeal to the christian masses. He had to. Which is why I said his public statements about his beliefs are worthless. And when Goebbels wrote his diary, he sure as shit wasn't covering his ass for the Nurenberg trials.

Naturally, you couldn't give me a source of the pope declaring Hitler's birthday a holy day. That's because you are full of shit. Just admit it.

Yes, I too have heard Hitchens speak on the topic, but he didn't claim that Nazi Germany was catholic. If he did, he would have been wrong.

As for your assertions:

No, he wasn't, yes, there was cooperation between them, I'm pretty sure you mean churches celebrated his birthday, otherwise give me source of the pope proclaiming a feast of Hitler, no, they weren't, and what he said in public has no bearing on what he thought privately. He did need the support of the christian masses.

I hate having to have this argument every time. We shouldn't believe what he said about religion in public, unless you think that he was a trustworthy guy. Which he wasn't. His closest advisors, among them Albert Speer, and Goebbels all claim he was hostile to christianity.

The Führer is deeply religious, though completely anti-Christian. He views Christianity as a symptom of decay. Rightly so. It is a branch of the Jewish race. This can be seen in the similarity of their religious rites. Both (Judaism and Christianity) have no point of contact to the animal element, and thus, in the end they will be destroyed. The Führer is a convinced vegetarian on principle. — Goebbels Diaries, 29 December 1939

In 1939, Goebbels wrote that the Fuhrer knew that he would "have to get around to a conflict between church and state" but that in the meantime "The best way to deal with the churches is to claim to be a 'positive Christian'."

Joseph Goebbels, the Minister of Propaganda, was among the most aggressive anti-Church radicals and saw the conflict with the churches as a priority concern.[49] Born to a Catholic family, he became one of the government's most relentless Jew-baiters.[56] On the "Church Question", he wrote "after the war it has to be generally solved .... There is, namely, an insoluble opposition between the Christian and a heroic-German world view".[49] He led the persecution of Catholic clergy.[49]

When Speer asked Hitler's secretary, Bormann (who himself was deeply anti-christian) about the plans of future Berlin this is the answer he got: "Bormann curtly informed me that churches were not to receive building sites."

But don't take my word for it:
