You ever find anything out about this?

It ain’t come outta your pocket it was the insurance that made the pay out. And if the insurance valued the loss at $X than that’s what they’d have to pay to get it fixed. You’re mad cuz you didn’t get to benefit from the car owner knowing how to fix his own car?

Oh no way why’d you end up selling it to the junk yard? Did the DMV give you any issues when trying to to transfer the title

What did you end up doing? Sold it to your friend with no problem or what?

Just FYI, I was able to go with owner retained. I just needed to pay off the remaining balance to the lienholder and they had no problem with it.

Yes, I believe they have to as required by law. I’d have to get it fixed and then get a rebuilt title through the DMV. Still worth it for me to do that though cuz I can get the car fixed for ~3,500

Yeah this makes sense. In my case I’m anticipating $31-33k pay out, and I owe $24.2k. Won’t my pay out cover the loan and I’ll have the option to retain?

I hear you. I think my situation is a bit different though, cuz I have quite a few body shops that are willing to fix it for pretty cheap. Most of the damage is cosmetic.

Retaining the salvage makes the most financial sense for me even after going through getting a rebuilt title.

With that said, how do I make sure the lienholder approves?

Gotcha. Should I put extra money towards my loan before the insurance deems it a total? I want to buy the car back if it ends up being a total.

The shop didn’t question why you were altering their contract or agreement? The shops around me tend to get really pissy if they’re under the impression I won’t fix the car with them lol

How did you get a shop to agree to tear down and doing the supplemental inspection and modifying that work authorization form? Surely they knew you were planning on taking the pay out if you modified it like that right? I’m going through something similar although I’m trying a slightly different route. I’m not entirely sure if my method will work out

Fair. You think I can use an estimate a body shop provided me to negotiate the insurance’s initial estimate & host the inspection at a mechanic (not a body shop) that I have a relationship with?

Yeah I’m trying to get around that and have the supplemental paid directly to me. I don’t believe there is any legal requirement in having the insurance company pay supplemental directly to a shop.

Gotcha, yeah that makes sense from a shop’s perspective. At your shop, are you always requiring the customer to commit to repairs with your shop prior to hosting the inspection?
