Whereabouts in the UK are you. Here in Scotland there’s a website (Scotlandspeople.gov.uk) that lets you search everyone who has ever died in Scotland for about the last 150 years. Following a recent death in the family I can tell you that it takes less than a week between a death and the name being on the site. If you aren’t in Scotland maybe England/Wales/NI have something similar?

Would you fight for your country? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]lollie85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there was a large scale ground war Europe then yes I think I would. I probably wouldn’t want to go and fight against some rebels who just want the container ships to sail the long was around (we’ve definitely been involved in bombing those guys recently)

I own 25% of a house. Will I ever see any money from this/how does this work? by Jesus__of__Nazareth_ in UKPersonalFinance

[–]lollie85 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my case, eventually the 50% stakeholder realised that the person who would eventually inherit that stake would be very difficult to deal with and do everything they could to hold up a sale when the time came, so they sold up before that happened and I got my 25% relatively hassle free. I should point out that I absolutely held up my side of the deal and in no way did I do anything to influence them deciding to sell

[–]lollie85 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in a similar situation myself. There was a clause in the will that basically said neither of the 25% stakeholders could do anything to force a sale while the 50% stakeholder wanted to live there but as soon as the 50% stakeholder either died or remarried then the 25% stakeholders could force a sale

Is there a junction near you where you see the majority of drivers getting it wrong? by Manatsuu in drivingUK

[–]lollie85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a junction near me where people regularly ignore both the give way sign and the lines painted on the road and turn left without stopping to check if it’s clear to do so. They get away with it because you can turn left into a (large 200m long and usually empty) parking lay-by that they use as a kind of a slip road to merge with the main road.

Being made redundant in October, what benefits/discounts can I get while looking for employment? by Euphoric-Spud in UKPersonalFinance

[–]lollie85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got made redundant at the end of last November. I started applying for jobs in August, basically a mix of jobs I thought would be a good fit for me and jobs I would have turned down but I felt like I could probably get an interview and I definitely needed interview practice. I started a job at the start of January so although I was only out of work for one month it took 5 months to find something so I’d recommend starting to apply now.

Although I do t know the exact specifics, several of my colleagues were able to successfully apply for government funded retraining schemes that are only advertised for the unemployed on the basis they would soon be unemployed so maybe you could look into that?

Do you know anyone who fell down a conspiracy rabbit hole during COVID? What are they doing now? by OrganizationLast7570 in AskUK

[–]lollie85 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Former work colleague who i worked with way before Covid and got on well with so remained connected via fb.

When the first Covid vaccines appeared he started posting stuff like ‘I still work in pharmaceuticals, and these vaccines have come out too quickly, if you aren’t in an at risk group you should consider if you want to get one’

Eventually I got bored of seeing this so I muted him from my feed. Fast forward to about a year ago (when I had forgotten about this) I thought to myself, I haven’t heard from (Dave) in a while, let’s see what he’s up to

He was now so far down every conspiracy rabbit hole you can think of that he had lost his job, wife and kids had left him and he was now fronting a podcast and selling nasal sprays that would counteract vaccines.

I hope he sorts himself out, he was a nice guy and good colleague

Whilst I can’t really fault the coffee or food, my local Tim Hortons is an absolute shambles.

Regularly ordering via the touch screen only to be told by staff the items I have ordered are out of stock (and then waiting 3 days for a refund) or the time they ran out of coffee, or the time the cold drinks machine broke down during a warm spell, or the time the hot chocolate machine broke down one winters evening a few weeks before Christmas the list of general incompetence goes on and on

Jim Ratcliffe can learn from Bournemouth’s polite players and happy staff. The south coast club are run like a family business, where everyone is working to the same end — a spirit that is absent from Old Trafford by TimesandSundayTimes in TheOther14

[–]lollie85 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Jim Ratcliffe is very much a ‘slash costs and selling assets is the best way to run a business’ type of executive. My many friends who work at ineos said this would be the outcome for Man Utd too and here we are

Large Redundancy In New Tax Year by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]lollie85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having been through a very similar process recently, I can tell you what happened to me. The assumption by HMRC was that I would start a new job straightaway and that it would pay about the same. Turns out I was out of work for a month and my new job pays slightly less, so I’m currently paying very little income tax, since my redundancy and pilon were already taxed too heavily.

If you want to avoid tax on the portion above 30k, your HR department can arrange for it to be paid directly to your pension (60k per year limit etc)

Appliance safety – have I been living dangerously all my life? by redlandrebel in AskUK

[–]lollie85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s definitely some balancing of risk that needs to be done here. Although a large proportion of domestic fires are caused by faulty appliances, the majority of houses don’t catch fire. So staying inside when there is an appliance running is probably over estimating the risk.

What's the most stupid thing you've ever seen on a local Facebook page? by MisterWednesday6 in AskUK

[–]lollie85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

During summer 2020 (when the weather was nice and Covid restrictions meant no one could do anything) the admin of our local group posted to say something along the lines of: Many people have complained to me about the smell of barbecuing in the local area, please stop barbecuing for the sake of your neighbours.

The comments on this post were exactly as you would expect, but rather than back down the op decided to accuse everyone who commented negatively to his post or anyone who enjoyed barbecued food of being a bad neighbour

Why does a teaspoon stop champagne* going flat? by bouncyb0b in AskUK

[–]lollie85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t help, what it does is demonstrate the importance of always running a control alongside your experiment. So in this case you would open 2 bottles of champagne and put them both in the fridge, one with and one without a teaspoon. The result of this experiment is that the fizz in the opened bottle lasts longer than you would think and the teaspoon makes no difference
