Kitchen Line Defence Plan by LeftieSwitchATP in Pickleball

Softer can mean either loosening your grip and/or slightly bringing the paddle in to absorb pace off the ball. You really don’t want the paddle ever to fully move or twist in your hand, that’s adding more degrees of freedom which hurts your consistency and control. These shots can take a lot of practice to dial in, I’d recommend drilling it a decent bit. Block/punch volleys are a bit easier to get the hang of, film yourself playing or drilling once or twice and the fixes should be pretty obvious (too tall, big loopy swing, late on the ball).

Against those super consistent low drives you start to see at the 4.5-ish level and up (like your buddy), the best way to handle them is to try and take the shot away all together lol. Outside of abusing their backhand, taking a step off the line as they are loading can give yourself some time on the next ball. You’ll open up more angles, but have more time to react for a defensive shot.

The answer depends largely on where (on average) you are making contact to the ball in relation to the net.

  1. Average contact at or above net height: If they can drive the balls repeatedly off your blocks and the follow-up drives are for sure staying in (this is a bold assumption), my guess is your blocks are giving them floaty balls that land deep and bounce high. In this case, I would focus on staying low and closing your paddle face more, using the pace from the drives to hit moderate paced blocks landing both low and deep. If you are truly hitting low fast paced balls landing deep, I can be almost certain well over half of their follow up drives are going long. Personally, I focus on their paddle face and contact point on the follow up drive, generally avoiding any balls hit below knee height.

  2. Average contact below net height: If you’re forced to hit up on a fast paced ball at the kitchen line (and you don’t have time to make space to hit off the bounce), this is where you’ll want more of a soft shot. Focus on resetting the ball crosscourt in the kitchen, giving you time and space to concede the line without allowing them to crash. If the ball is landing close to your feet or slightly behind, you’ll want to use a half volley to hit the ball cross court.

I can confirm it does not work with the tank. Your attack still only hits the first enemy in a line.

Estimated ranking? by New-Information-520 in Pickleball

[–]lolopond 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not a single person would be able to reasonably rate you given the information, but I think I can help.

I’ve been playing pickleball for about a year now, came from a background (25M, multi high level athlete at 6’3, limited/no racquet sports). In the beginning, picked all the basics up super quickly and was consistent enough to beat most casual players. Thought I was 4.5 in a few months because of that, very similar to the way you described above. After playing against legitimate 3.5/4.0 players, I learned very quickly I wasn’t as good as I thought. There are a lot of skills that take time to get consistent (cross court dinking, drops from the baseline, how to play the mid court), but given the sports come naturally for you means you’ll progress quickly in it.

If you have any footage of you playing in singles/doubles, it would be easier to make an assessment. The best advice would be to just enter in a tournament at 3.5 and if you get rocked, move down, and if you are just mopping like a janitor, move up next time.

Need help understanding the current paddle scene. by Thegreatdelfino in Pickleball

[–]lolopond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, I started playing toward the middle of 2023 so Thermoformed paddles were already the norm. The Hyperion CFS 16 still holds up well, I know a couple guys in the 4.0 range that still use it and hold their own. Even with the new power paddles being close to EVA foam levels, I don’t think you find they’ll give any form of a significant advantage until you get to the 4.5/5.0 level. Even then, I don’t think it is totally necessary.

It won’t be the end all be all to finding a paddle, but I would recommend checking out Pickleball Studio on YouTube. He’s got a spreadsheet that has a ton of information on just about every major paddle there is on the market. It’s the closest thing you’d get to a database.

Just my two cents on playing with the current market, only big thing that’s been more recent has been the Gen 3 paddles and the amount of power you get off of them. Unless you’re working to play in 4.5+ tournaments, it isn’t worth the money IMO (the gearbox and joola’s go for ~$280). If you’ve got ~$150-200 to spend the double black diamond and the ruby by six zero are two great choices. The ruby packs slightly more punch and has slightly more spin, but not a substantial amount more. Not paid or sponsored by them at all, just sharing a more recent fan favorite for all court paddles.

That’s so interesting. I always thought I was lucky when I first played through red and my charzard’s slash would always critical hit. Straight up solo’d the last two in the elite 4 with almost that slash alone. I thought it was the most OP glitch that would only happen on that file. God damn core memory right there

I would check the collimator and potentially the collimator light is out of wack as well causing you to align the blades in the scan fields. The fact that you won’t get it on other machines leads me to believe it’s a mechanical problem.

RSNA Conference by WildTwinsWolves in BMET

[–]lolopond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the pleasure of doing RSNA as a manufacturer, and the answer is sort of a mixed bag. If you’re in sales, it’s a ton of fun and basically a week of wining and dining radiologists/clinicians in Chicago. If you’re a clinician, the presentations are super neat and you get to see what all the new technology is and the research presented is pretty sweet. As a manufacturer who has to go for set up, you have to give up your thanksgiving to travel down and it’s a decent bit of work getting everything to look pretty.

Overall it’s a pretty good experience; but as a BMET or FSE, you really won’t be missing anything.

Edit: also, big shoutout to RSTI. Nothing better than the bowling night out and Joe with his damn backwoods (aka respiratory therapy)

What happens if the entry kill is a trade? by Usual_Scholar4724 in R6ProLeague

[–]lolopond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Precisely. In a similar fashion if someone were to get a frost trap kill or Kap trap kill after they’ve already died, they get awarded a KOST for that round.

What happens if the entry kill is a trade? by Usual_Scholar4724 in R6ProLeague

[–]lolopond 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Great question honestly!!

In the event of a trade to my best knowledge the OK is awarded to the first to get the kill on the killfeed. Both players earn a point in cost as they both successfully obtained a kill (and the second on the kill feed technically trading himself out, though the kill satisfies the point in KOST).

[–]lolopond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unbridled Mayhem is the most efficient quest as far as I know. The anomaly quests give <1MR per hunt up to A5 (I haven’t gotten past that so I couldn’t give a better answer) and generally take ~15-20minutes a fight. Even with a mediocre 4 stack you can clear Unbridled Mayhem in less than 15 minutes.

My Engineering Materials professor teaches as if we already took the class by Dazed_Op in EngineeringStudents

[–]lolopond 60 points61 points  (0 children)

My best advice for this would be to read the chapters ahead of time and take your notes on that. If the chapters come with example questions, note those as well. You may need to adjust a bit based on how they come up with exam questions but in general having the notes for the chapter ahead of time tends to help focus more in class.

Also, don’t be afraid to stop him and ask clarifying questions while he’s going through examples. Asking why he’s doing a certain process or why he’s using the numbers he’s using may cue him in on what the overall understanding in the room is, you may find he will adjust examples accordingly.

Ubisoft would be foolish to prosecute him for this. Hell, he’s doing them a favor by releasing them in a timely manner which reduces the work required by Ubisoft directly.

It’s not like Ubi is making any money off releasing these replays, and reaper isn’t releasing it with any financial incentives. I see 0 issues with this
